The floors of the ocean have many
riches that can be used by man. Oil and chemicals and minerals (矿物) already are
taken from the sea. By using nuclear energy, ocean water can be turned into
fresh water by taking the salt out. In the near future, it is possible for human
beings to produce food from farms under the sea. Food grown in the sea could
help to meet the needs of population all over the world which is increasing
fast. Thousands of people go hungry every day. About ten to fifteen percent of
the world's people do not have enough food. Some scientists believe that someday
the sea will be used to make electric power. This would help to meet the need
for more power for the world's industries. The decreasing supply of coal, oil
and gas shows that the need to find new kinds of power is
urgent.

The idea of rain making is almost as
old as man, but it was not until 1946 that man succeeded in making rain. In
ancient times, rainmakers claimed(声称) to be able to bring rain by many methods:
dancing, singing, killing various kinds of living creatures (including humans),
and blowing a stream of water into the air from a kind of pipe.
More recently, some rainmakers claimed to make rain by shooting guns,
causing explosions, or burning chemicals; the smoke of which was supposed to
cause rain to fall. These rainmakers asked for as much as 1,000 dollars to make
an inch of rain. One was so effective that he was almost hanged. He was believed
to have caused a twenty-inch rain in southern California that flooded that land,
killed several people, and did millions of dollars' worth of damage.
Before 1946, raimnakers were either liars or honest people who happened to
have good luck. Scientific rain making was started in that year by Vincent J.
Schaefer, a scientist at the laboratories of the General Electric Company in New
York State. His success was the result of a lucky accident that changed years of
failure into victory.

Water problems in the future will
become more intense and more complex. Our increasing population will
tremendously increase urban wastes, primarily sewage (污物). On tile other hand,
increasing demands for water will decrease substantially the amount of water
available for diluting (稀释) wastes. Rapidly expanding industries which involve
more and mine complex chemical processes will produce large volumes of liquid
wastes, and many of these will contain chemicals which are noxious. To feed our
rapidly expanding population, agriculture will have to be intensified. This will
involve ever-increasing quantities of agricultural chemicals. From this, it is
apparent that drastic steps must be taken immediately to develop correct
measures for the pollution problem. There are two ways by which
this pollution problem can be solved. The first way is to de- crease their
pollution hazard. This involves the processing of solid wastes "prior to"
disposal and the treatment of liquid wastes. A second approach
is to develop an economic use for all or a part of the wastes. Farm manure (肥料)
is spread in fields as a nutrient or organic supplement. Effluents (废液) from
sewage disposal plants are used in some areas both for irrigation and for the
nutrients contained. Effluents from other processing factories may also be used
as a supplemental source of water. Many industries, such as meat and poultry
processing factories, are currently changing former waste products into
marketable by-products. Other industries are economic uses for waste
products.
