单选题With the invention and development of television, entertainment has grown much more visual in character and is demanding less and less use of the imagination, considered by many to be man"s greatest faculty; but its greatest inadequacy lies in its inability to exercise just those creative powers in men which are called upon and developed in the pursuit of a worthwhile hobby. This lack is not serious while a man is still fully employed in his day-to-day work which itself often gives him opportunities to create either with his hands or with his mind. At this time he seeks only some form of relaxation in his leisure. There comes a time, however, when he must retire from his occupation on account of age, and it is then that these shallower pastimes, useful enough as a form of relaxation, might cease to satisfy the hitherto active man. Today, many elderly people are finding this to be true, and seem constantly to be suffering from a sense of frustration after retirement, which reveals itself in a short temper and slow degeneration (衰退) of health, the two most common symptoms.

单选题 The world is not only hungry; it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you because nearly 75% of the earth's surface is covered with water. But about 97% of this huge amount is seawater or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3%—the freshwater that comes from rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources. And we cannot use all of that, because some of it is in the form of iceberg and glaciers (冰河). Even worse, some of it has been polluted. However, as things stand today, this small amount of fresh water, which is constantly being replaced by rainfall, is still enough for us. But our need for water is increasing rapidly almost day by day. Only if we take steps to deal with this problem now can we avoid a severe worldwide water shortage later on. A limited water supply would have a bad effect on agriculture and industry. We all have to learn how to stop wasting our precious water. One of the first steps we should take is to develop ways of reusing it. Experiments have already been done in this field, but only a small scale. The systems that have been worked out resemble those used in spacecraft.

单选题In New York, there is now a school with no daily lessons, no class teachers, not even a school building, The "school" is a now project. It is called "City-as-School" and the name means just that, the city itself is the place where 350 students, between the age of 15 and 18, learn their lessons. Students choose areas of work which interest them and then they help to do that work. For instance, one girl spends her week in the offices of a Congresswoman — an elected official — helping the public with problems such as pensions, housing, etc. Then she goes to help in a theatre for a day and she spends one day a week taking first-year courses at college. City-as-School is 30 years old. The education system in New York accepts it now, as an alternative to final years at school. But can it replace ordinary lessons? Well, students have to pass maths and science exams before they enter the "school". These subjects are not easy to provide for in "City-as-School". Teachers monitor the progress of the students, 80 to 85% of the students go to college ( or university, as it is called in Britain) after their time at "City-as-School". The success rate is high. And the students are enthusiastic about their "school". They like the responsibility of their work, and the sense of purpose it gives them. When the students leave "City-as-School", they don't have a normal academic education; but they do know a lot about different kinds of work in the city !

单选题There are many ways to learn about people of other lands. One way is to study the clothing other people wear. For thousands of years, people in different parts of the world have worn very different types of clothing. There are four big reasons for this. One reason might be religion. In many Moslem countries, women must wear veils (面纱) to hide their faces. The veils must be worn in public. Veils are part of the Moslem religion. The second reason is that different materials are used in different countries. For instance, in France the materials used in clothing may be cotton, silk, wool, or many other man-made materials. Most people in China wear cotton. The way clothes are made is also very different. This is another reason why people dress differently. Western countries rely on machines to make most of their clothing. Someone living in India can use only hand power to make the clothing he needs. Worldwide differences in customs also lead to differences in clothing. A Mexican farmer wears a straw hat with a brim up. In China, a farmer wears a straw hat with a brim down. Both hats are used to protect the farmers from the sun. Some of these customs have come down through thousands of years.
