单选题We buried (埋葬) Donald Brown in May. He was murdered (谋杀) by four men who wanted to rob the supermarket manager he was protecting. Patrolman (巡警) Brown was 61 years old. In just six months he and his wife had planned to retire to Florida. Now there will be no retirement in the sun, and she is alone.
Donald Brown was the second police officer to die since I became Police Commissioner of Boston in 1972. The first was Detective John Schroeder, shot in a pawnshop (当铺) robbery last November. John Schroeder was the brother of Walter Schroeder, who was killed in a bank robbery in 1970. Their names are together on the honor roll (光荣榜) in Police Headquarters.
At least two of these police officers were shot by a handgun (手枪), the kind almost anyone can buy nearly everywhere for a few dollars. Ownership of handguns has become so widespread that this weapon is no longer merely the instrument of crime; it is now a cause of violent (暴力) crime. Of the eleven Boston police officers killed since 1962, seven were killed with handguns; of the eighteen wounded by guns since 1962, seventeen were shot with handguns.

Never give out identifying information
such as home address, school name, or telephone number in a public message such
as chat or newsgroups, and be sure you're dealing with someone both you and your
children know and trust before giving out this information via E-mail. Do not
post photographs of your children in newsgroups or on web sites that are
available to the public. Never allow your child to arrange a
face-to-face meeting with someone they "meet" on the Internet. If a meeting is
arranged, make the first one in a public place, and be sure to accompany your
child. Remember that people online may not be who they seem.
Because you can't see or even hear the person it would be easy for someone to
misrepresent him or herself. Thus someone indicating that "she" is a
"12-year-old girl" could in reality be a 40-year-old man.
Remember that everything you read online may not be true. Any offer that's
"too good to be true" probably is. Be careful about any offers that involve you
going to a meeting,' having someone visit your house, or sending money or
credit-card information. Remember that personal computers and
online services should not be used as electronic babysitters.
Get to know your child's "online friends" just as you get to know all of
their other friends.

Learning how to turn in homework
assignments on time is one of the invaluable skills that college students can
take with them into the working world. Though the workforce may not assign
homework to its workers in the traditional sense, many of the objectives and
jobs require that employees work with deadlines. The deadlines that students
encounter may be different in content when compared to the deadlines of the
workforce, but the importance of meeting those deadlines is the
Failure to meet deadlines in both the classroom and the workforce can mean
instant termination. For example, in the classroom, students form a contract
with the teacher and the university when they enroll in a class. That contract
requires that students complete the assignments and objectives in a specified
time to receive a grade and credit for the course. Accordingly, just as a
student risks termination in the classroom if he/she fails to meet the deadline
for a homework assignment, so, too, does that student risk termination in the
workforce. When a student fails to complete those assignments by the deadline,
the student breaks his/her contract with the university and the teacher to
complete the assignments and objectives of the course. This often leaves the
teacher with no other recourse than to fail the student and leaves the
university with no other recourse than to terminate the student's credit for the
course. Developing good habits of turning in assignments in
class now, as current students, will aid your performance and position as future
participants in the working world.

单选题Do you remember a time when people were a little nicer and gentler with each other? I certainly do and I feel that much of the world has somehow gotten away from that.Too often Isee people rushing into elevators without giving those inside a chance to get off first,or never saying"thank you",when others hold the door open for hem.We get lazy, and in outr laziness we think that something like simple"thank you"does not really matter. But it can matter very much. The fact is that no matter how nicely we dress or how beautifully we decorate our homes,we cannot be truly elegant unless we have good manners, because elegance and good manners alwaysgo hand in hand.If fact,I think of good manners as a sort of hidden beauty secret.Haven't you noticed that happens, but it does.Take the long-lost art saying"thank you",like wearing a little make-up or making sure you hair is neat.Getting into the habit of saying"thank you"can makeyou feel better about yourself.Good manners add to your image while an angry face makes the best-dressed person look ugly.
