阅读理解The London Underground (usually called "the tube") is the biggest subway system in the world. It is also the fastest way to travel in the city. The network consists of nine major routes(路线), called "lines". You can buy tickets at any underground station, at a ticket office, or from a ticket machine. Some of the ticket machines require exact money. All of the machines display "Change given" or "Exact money only" signs. The price of the ticket depends on the length of the trip. The longer the trip, the higher the cost of the ticket. Trains stop at all stations. On some trains, passengers need to press a button to open doors. Every underground train car has maps that show all the stations on the line you are traveling on. There is a map of the whole underground system in every station. Smoking is not allowed on underground trains or in stations.

阅读理解Sometimes urgent things are important and sometimes they aren''t. You will never have enough time for everything, so you need to decide what is really important. Important activities are those which help you to achieve your goals. Most of us have learned to respond to urgent requests at the expense of important tasks. Ignore important tasks at your peril----they will escalate and become urgent, at which point you have yet another crisis to deal with! Do you find yourself responding to "urgent" items or requests more quickly than "important" ones? Start making important tasks seem more urgent by setting deadlines for them, and schedule the activities into your day. Make sure you take care of the important tasks, even if they are not urgent. When you do have to react to an "urgent request", spend some time thinking through your response. Solutions that are well thought out are usually better than impulsive reactions. If you start spending 80% of your time working with "Not Urgent but Important" items, and only 20% of your time on the others, your effectiveness will increase greatly. Most people start with the quick, easy or enjoyable tasks on their task list. Think about starting with the most important tasks instead.

阅读理解The ups and downs of life may seem to have no predictable plan. But scientists now know there are very definite patterns that almost all people share. Even if you''ve passed some of your "prime", you still have other prime years to experience in the future. When are you smartest? From 18 to 25, according to I. Q. scores; but you''re wiser and more experienced with increasing age. You''re sharpest in your 20''s. But your I. Q. for other tasks climbs. Your vocabulary at age 45, for example, is three times as great as when you graduated from college. At 60, your brain possesses almost four times as much information as it did at age 21. When are you happiest? You have the best physical sense of yourself from 15 to 24; the best professional sense from 40 to 44. Before age 24, we believe that our happiest years are yet to come; over 30, we believe that they''re behind us. A National Health Survey agrees: After age 30, we become more realistic and do not view happiness as a goal in itself. If we maintain our health, achieve professional and emotional goals, happiness will follow. When are you most creative? Generally between 30 and 39, but the peak varies with different professions. Mozart wrote a symphony by age eight, and Mendelssohn composed his best known work at 17, but most of the great music was written by men between 33 and 44. Though the peak in most fields comes early, creative people continue to produce quality work throughout their lives. For the "well-conditioned mind" , there is no upper limit.

阅读理解Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at the Louisville, Kentucky Experimental Kindergarten, and Dr. Patty Hill, the principal of the same school, together wrote a song for the children, entitled "Good Morning to All". When Mildred combined her musical talents with her sister''s expertise in the area of Kindergarten Education, "Good Morning to All" was sure to be a success. The sisters published the song in a collection entitled "Song Stories of the Kindergarten" in 1893. Thirty-one years later, after Dr. Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University''s Teacher College, a gentleman by the name of Robert H. Coleman published the song, without the sisters'' permission. To add insult to injury, he added a second verse, the familiar "Happy Birthday to You". Mr. Coleman''s addition of the second verse popularized the song and, eventually, the sisters'' original first verse disappeared. "Happy Birthday to You", the one and only birthday song, had altogether replaced the sisters'' original title, "Good Morning to All" After Mildred died in 1916, Patty, together with a third sister named Jessica, sprang into action and took Mr. Coleman to court. In court, they proved that they, indeed, owned the melody. Because the family legally owns the song, it is entitled to royalties from it, whenever it is sung for commercial purposes.

阅读理解Lemonade is a favorite summer drink. It is enjoyed at family meals, picnic, ball games, and many special parties. People like its light, lemony taste. They also like it because it keeps them from getting too thirsty. Do you drink it? Fresh lemonade can be made by cutting a lemon in half and squeezing the juice into a cup. After the seeds are taken out, sugar and water are mixed in. One cup of lemon juice, one cup of sugar, and two quarts of water stirred together make good lemonade. There are even easier ways to get lemonade. One way is to buy lemonade powder. Then add the right amount of water. Another way is to buy cans of frozen lemonade and mix it with water. The easiest way of all is to buy and open a can of lemonade that is ready to drink, just like a can of juice. Lemonade is good for people. It has vitamin C. It keeps the body cool in summer. When served hot it can help a bad com or a sore throat. Lemonade is not a new drink. It has been around for a long time. Some say it came from China. Others think it probably came from England or France. More than four hundred years ago an English doctor wrote about the good that lemonade can do for people.

阅读理解The brand (商标) name puts a face on every company. Names like McDonald''s, GM, Apple, Intel, and a large number of others have long become very popular. They''ve also given customers a point of reference when thinking about a company. Good brand names might help companies avoid heavy costs and bring them greater profits. Usually companies create names that are easy to learn and remember. Firstly, the name should create interest. Rhymes (压韵)and humor are some ways to gain interest, but there are others as well. Think about your customers and what would interest them. Secondly, the name should present a picture or image. People remember them most because the name is stored in pictures and words. Thirdly, the name should be meaningful. It can be done with lots of advertising, but names that are themselves more meaningful to customers are more easily stored in memory. More important, the name should have meaningful associations that show the benefits customers want. Then the name should have some emotion. Emotional associations are easier to learn and remember. The Love Boat, for instance, is very easy to remember. Finally, the name should be simple so that it is easier to learn and remember.

阅读理解My son Joey was born with club feet. The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally, but would never run very well. The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn''t tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn''t know. He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day —— even the day he had a 103-degree fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school. I found him running all alone. He had two more miles to go. The sweat ran down his face and his eyes were glassy from his fever. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. We never told him he couldn''t run four miles with a 103-degree fever. So he didn''t know. Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. We never told him he shouldn''t expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn''t do it. So he didn''t know. He just did it.
