阅读理解My son Joey was born with club feet. The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally, but would never run very well. The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn''t tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn''t know. He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day —— even the day he had a 103-degree fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school. I found him running all alone. He had two more miles to go. The sweat ran down his face and his eyes were glassy from his fever. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. We never told him he couldn''t run four miles with a 103-degree fever. So he didn''t know. Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. We never told him he shouldn''t expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn''t do it. So he didn''t know. He just did it.

阅读理解A budget(预算)is a spending plan. It can help you spend money wisely, It can do this by cutting out wasteful spending. Of course, preparing a budget takes planning, and following a budget takes willpower(自制力). Your budget should meet your family''s needs and income. The first step in creating a budget is to set your goals. What does your family need and want? You must know all that to work out the details of the budget. Never spend more than you can. Then decide which goals are the most important. The next step is estimating family income. Before you can plan wisely, you need to know how much money you have to spend! Write down all the money you expect to receive(wages, saving, interest, etc. )during the planned budget period. After you have calculated how much money will be available, it is time to estimate expenses. List all of your family expenses. If you are not satisfied with what you got for your money, look carefully at your spending. Studying your records will show where overspending has occurred. It will also point out poor buying habits. It is also a good idea to set aside a small mount of money for emergencies(紧急情况). Every family has small emergencies: a blown tire, a broken device, or the need for medical care.

阅读理解"Fingers were made before forks." When a person puts aside his knife and fork, and dives into his food, someone often repeats that saying. The fork was ancient (古代的) agricultural tool, but for centuries no one thought of eating with it. Not until the eleventh century, when a young lady from Turkey brought her fork to Italy, did the custom reach Europe. By the fifteenth century the use of the fork was widely spread in Italy. The English explanation was that Italians hated eating food touched with fingers. English were thought to be womanlike and women who used them were called show-offs (卖弄) and overnice(过于讲究的). Not until the late 1600s did using a fork become a common custom.

阅读理解December 13th, 2005 Dear Sirs, I am very happy to apply for the position of secretary, which you advertised in China Daily of December 10, 2005. I have been working as a secretary at a college office. Because I am the only secretary in the office, it is necessary for me to work quickly and efficiently and to be flexible in my daily work. Professors value my work and my ability to meet their needs. Although I m happy now, I feel that my promotion(晋升) is limited here, and I would like to have a more challenging job. Therefore, I enrolled(参加) in a program to expand my knowledge of international business affairs. Now, both my English and Chinese have been improved and I am ready to begin working as a bilingual secretary in an international company like yours, and I believe I can be a great help to your firm. The enclosed resume gives further details of my qualifications, and I would appreciate it if you could give me an opportunity to have an interview. I am looking forward to receiving your call at 62428866 or please use the enclosed pre-paid postcard to send me your reply. Thank you very much for your consideration. Faithfully Yours, Mary Lee

阅读理解Telecommuting(远程办公) It''s 8:30, time for John to start work. So he turns on his radio. Then he eats breakfast. As he eats, he reads his e-mail and reviews his to-do list. Then lie sits on the sofa and thinks about an article he needs to write......Wait a minute! Radio? Breakfast? Sofa? What kind of workplace is this? Well, actually it is John''s house, and he is a telecommuter——he works at home, communicating with the workplace through the Internet. Like John, millions of people——and their employers——are finding that telecommuting is a great way to work. Telecommuters can follow their own schedules. They work in the comfort of their homes, where they can also look after young children or elderly parents. They save lime and money by not traveling to work. Their employers save, too, because they need less office space and furniture. Studies show that telecommuters change jobs less often. This saves employers even more money. Telecommuting helps society, too, by reducing pollution and traffic problems. Jobs that are suited to telecommuting include writing, design work, computer programming and accounting(会计). If a job involves working with information, a telecommuter can probably do it.

阅读理解Unlike Britain, the US does not have a national health care service. The government does help pay for some medical care for people who are on low incomes and for old people, but most people buy insurance(保险) to help pay for medical care. The problems of those who cannot afford insurance are an important political subject. In Britain, when people are ill, they usually go to a family doctor first. However, people in America sometimes go straight to an expert without seeing their family doctor first. Children are usually taken to a doctor who is an expert in the treatment(治疗) of children. In Britain, if a patient needs to see a specialist doctor, their family doctor will usually recommend a specialist. Doctors do not go to people''s homes when they are ill. People always make appointments to see the doctor in the doctor''s office. In a serious situation, people call for an ambulance(救护车). In America, hospitals must treat all seriously ill patients, even if they do not have medical insurance. The government will then help pay for some of the cost of the medical care.

阅读理解The old-fashioned general store is fast disappearing. This is, perhaps, a pity, because shopping today seems to lack that personal element which existed when the shopkeeper knew all his regular customers personally. He could, for instance, remember which brand of tea Mrs. Smith usually bought or what sort of washing powder Mrs. Jones preferred. Not only the shop a center of buying and selling, but a social meeting place. A prosperous general store might have employed four or five assistants, and so there were very few problems in management as far as the staff were concerned. But now that the supermarket has placed the general store, the job of the manager has changed completely. The modern supermarket manager has to cope with a staff of as many as a hundred, apart from all the other everyday problems of running a large business. Every morning the manager must, like a commander of an army division, carry out an inspection of his store to make sure that every is ready for the business of the day. He must see that everything is running smoothly. He will have to give advice and make decisions as problems arise; and he must know how to get his huge staff to work efficiently with their respective responsibilities. No matter what he has to do throughout the day, however, the supermarket manager must be ready for any emergency that may arise. They say in the trade that you are not really an experienced supermarket manager until you have dealt with a flood, a fire, a birth and a death in your store.
