听力题 The Mediterranean is a word both easy to pronounce and easy to spell—if you only know how. It is a word of five syllables: me-di-ter-ran-ean, meaning mid-earth. The Chinese translation is a happy one, as it means exactly the same thing. Europe owes its early growth to the Mediterranean Sea. On its shores were the seats of early civilization: Egypt, Greece and Rome. The Mediterranean fed the people in these lands and provided a highway for trade and diplomacy. Together, they formed a Mediterranean civilization. In 1869 the Suez Canal was cut after 10 years of arduous work. Linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean, the Canal shortened the passage from Europe to Asia by some 10,000 kilometres. The Canal is 171 km long and 65 km wide. An ocean liner takes some 10 hours to go through. It goes slowly, but safely. The Canal is now completely Egyptian property. Foreign ships pay for their passage, making the Canal a good earner of hard currency The Mediterranean is a word both easy to pronounce and easy to spell—if you only know how. 听力题 You can tell the age of a tree by counting its rings, but these records of a tree''s life really say a lot more. Scientists are using tree rings to learn what''s been happening on the sun''s surface for the last ten thousand years. Each ring represents a year of growth. As a tree grows, it adds a layer to its trunk, taking up chemical dements from the air. By looking at the elements in the tings from a given year, scientists can tell what elements were in the air that year. Doctor Stevenson is analyzing one element--carbon-14 in rings from both living and dead trees. Some of the rings go back almost ten thousand years to the end of the Ice Age. When Stevenson followed the carbon-14 trail back in time, he found carbon-14 levels change with the intensity of solar burning. You see, the sun has cycles. Sometimes it burns fiercely; at other times it''s relatively calm. During the sun''s violent periods, it throws off charged particles in fast moving streams called "solar winds". The particles interfere with the formation of carbon-14 on earth. When there''s more solar wind activity, less carbon-14 is produced. Ten thousand years of tree rings show that the carbon-14 level rises and falls about every 420 years. The scientists concluded that solar wind activity must follow the same cycle. 听力题 The mighty quake that devastated (摧毁) remote regions in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan on Saturday Morning, has left desperate survivors without power or water. The United Nations Children''s Fund said early this week that between 20,000 and 40,000 people had died. The 7. 6-magnitude(震级) quake flattened villagers, cutting off power and water, and killing tens of thousands people. But reaching those in remote areas is difficult. Pakistan''s President Perves Musharraf had appealed for international help. Chinese had said it stands ready to provide whatever help it can for the reconstruction work in the areas. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao made the promise on Sunday. The country has promised to offer Pakistan humanitarian (人道主义) assistance that includes US $ 6.2 million worth of relief materials and funds. On Sunday, the Ministry of Commerce sent US $ 1 million in cash and shipped 90 tons of relief materials including tents, blankets and quilts to Pakistan. A 49-member rescue team also set off. So far, only one Chinese has been confirmed(确认) dead in the quake. The United States, Britain, Japan, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, Russia and Germany also offered assistance. 听力题 Scientists say sharks have lived in the world''s oceans for millions of years. Scientists say there are more than three-hundred-fifty different kinds of sharks. Sharks do not have bones, and a shark has an extremely good sense of smell. It can find small amounts of substances in the water, such as blood, body liquids and chemicals produced by animals. Sharks also sense electrical and magnetic power linked to nerves and muscles of living animals. These powerful senses help them find their food. Some sharks will eat just about anything. Many unusual things have been found in the stomachs of some tiger sharks. They include shoes, dogs, a cow''s foot and metal protective clothing. About forty percent of the different kinds of sharks lay eggs. The others give birth to live young. Some sharks carry their young inside their bodies like humans do. Scientists are beginning to understand the importance of sharks to humans. Medical researchers want to learn more about the shark''s body defense system against disease. They know that sharks recover quickly from injuries. Sharks appear never to suffer infections, cancer or heart diseases. Scientists say sharks have lived in the world''s oceans for millions of years.
