听力题 We all know that it is possible for ordinary people to make their homes on the equator, although often they may feel uncomfortably hot there. Millions do it. But as for the North Pole, we know that it is not only a dangerously cold place, but that people like you and me would find it quite impossible to live there. At the present time only the scientists and explorers can do so, and they use special equipment. Men have been travelling across and around the equator on wheels, on their feet or in ships for thousands of years; but only a few men, with great difficulty and in very recent time, have ever crossed the ice to the North Pole. So it may surprise you to learn that, when travelling by air, it is really safer to fly over the North Pole than over the equator. Of course, this is not true about landings in the polar region (which passenger airplane do not make), but the weather, if we are flying at a height of 5,000 meters above the Pole, is a delight. At 4,000 meters and more above the earth you can always be sure that you will not see a cloud in the sky as far as the eye can reach. In the tropics, on the other hand, you are not certain to keep clear of bad weather even at such heights as 18,000 or 20,000 metres. Aeroplane can''t climb as high or as quickly in cold air as in warm. Nor can clouds. In practice, this is an advantage to the aeroplane, which is already at a good height when it reaches the polar region and so does not need to climb, while at the same time cold air keeps the clouds down low. 听力题Avian flu or H5N1 has infected more than a hundred people so far in at least ten countries. The virus in Asia is killing more than 50% of the humans infected. If this virus learns to (36) ______human to human and (37)______that level of killing humans, we''d got a global (38)______. Under (39)______ microscope, flu viruses look like spiky creatures. H5N1 may seem unassuming in the lab, but be sure it has ability to cause a public health (40)______. In fact experts say that H5N1 (41)______ strain responsible for the 1918 Flu pandemic. That strain mutated to (42)______ between people and (43)______. killed as many as 15 million around the world. (44)____________. But scientists warn that H5N1 could change to become an explosive killer. (45)____________ Here''s what I mean. Let''s say that the chicken farmer has the regular flu which always spreads like a wild fire from person to person. Then he gets infected with H5N1 from one of his chickens. Now both viruses are in the cells where they exchange some of their genes. That''s called re-assortment. If they shuffle the gene just right, (46)____________. And that is the biggest fear of all.

听力题 An elderly woman yesterday made a legal claim against a department store because it had wrongly accused her of stealing a Christmas card, Ms. Doss White, 72 years old, is claiming $3000 damages from the store for wrongful arrest and false imprisonment. Ms. White visited the store while doing Christmas shopping, but did not buy anything. She was followed through the town by a store manager. He had been told that a customer saw her take a card and put it in her shopping bag. He stopped her at a bookstore as she was reading a book. Ms. White said, "This man, a total stranger, suddenly grasped my bag and asked if he could look in it". She was taken back to the store and shut in a small room in full view of shoppers for 20 minutes until the police arrived. At the police station she was body-searched and nothing was found. Her lawyer said that the department store sent an insincere apology and they insisted that she may have been stealing. The hearing continues today. 听力题 People usually sing because they like music or because they feel happy. They express their happiness by singing. When a bird sings, however, its song usually means much more than that a bird is in a good temper. Birds have many reasons for singing. They sing to give information. Their songs are their language. Love songs are sung by male birds. They sing when they want to attract a female bird. It is their way of saying that they are looking for a wife. Birds also sing to tell other birds to keep away. To a bird, his tree, or even a branch of tree is his home. He does not want strangers to come near his home. So he sings to warn them. If a bird can not sing well, he usually has some other means of giving important information. Some birds dance, spread out their tails, or make other signs. There is also a special kind of bird which builds a small garden of stones and flowers to attract a female bird. People usually sing because they like music or because they feel happy. 听力题 We use all sorts of services without thinking about how we get them. But such services cost money. We pay for them through taxes. What would happen ff everyone in the city stop paying taxes? The water supply would stop, the street might not get cleaned, there would be no police to protect people and property. The chief duty of every government is to protect persons and property. More than three fourths of the money spent by our government is used for this purpose. The next largest, amount of public money goes to teach and train our citizens. Billions of dollars each year are spent on schools and libraries. Public money is used to pay the teachers and other public officials. Years ago the government made money from the sale of public lands. But most of the best public lands have now been sold. The money raised was used to help pay the cost of government. There are still some public lands that contain oil, coal, gas, and other natural products. They could be sold, but we want to save them for future years. So we all must pay our share for the services that make our lives comfortable. We use all sorts of services without thinking about how we get them. But such services cost money.
