听力题 There are many single parents because there are many divorces in the United States. Here is the story of one single parent who is happy with her life. My name is Sara. I’m a secretary for a businessman in a small city. I have two daughters and a son. I was divorced three years ago. My ex-husband, Ron, comes to see the children one or two times a month. He usually takes them to a movie or a restaurant. The life of a single parent is hard. I work all of the time. I work at my job all day. Then I go home to work all evening. I am often tired when I get home at 5:30 in the evening. Tired or not, I make dinner for my children and listen to their problems. After dinner, I clean the house, shop for food, or help the children with their homework. My children are young, but they help me around the house. My biggest problem is money. When Ron and I divorced he let me have the small house the children and I live in. I am glad to have it because it’s good for the children. Now I have to pay for it every month. That’s difficult. I make about $ 10,000 a year at my job. Ron has to pay me $256 a month to help with the children. Everything is very expensive now. There isn’t enough money for everything. I have to be very careful. Do I want to marry again? Maybe. I’m going to be very careful. If I marry again, I want to be sure it will be a good marriage this time. I don’t want to hurry. I’m happier by myself than in a bad marriage. There are many single parents because there are many divorces in the United States. Here is the story of one single parent who is happy with her life. 听力题 Do you remember a time when people were a little nicer and gentler with each other? I certainly do. And I feel that much of the world has somehow gotten away from that. Too often I see people rushing into elevators without giving those inside a chance to get off first, or never saying "thank you" when others hold a door open for them. We get lazy and in our laziness we think that something like a simple "thank you" doesn''t really matter. But it can matter very much. The fact is that no matter how nicely we dress or how beautifully we decorate our homes, we can''t be truly elegant without good manners, because elegance and good manners always go hand in hand. In fact, I think of good manners as a sort of hidden beauty secret. Haven''t you noticed that the kindest, most generous people seem to keep getting prettier? It''s funny how that happens, but it does. Take the long-lost art of saying "thank you", like wearing a little make-up, or making sure your hair is neat. Getting into the habit of saying "thank you" can make you feel better about yourself. Good manners add to your image, while an angry face makes the best dressed person look ugly. 听力题 We use all sort of services without thinking about how we get them. But such services cost money. We pay for them through taxes. What would happen if everyone in the city stop paying taxes? The water supply would stop, the street might not get cleaned, there would be not police force to protect people and property. The chief duty of every government is to protect persons and property. More than three fourths of the money spent by our government is used for this purpose. The next largest amount of public money goes to teach and train our citizens. Billions of dollars each year are spent on schools and libraries. Public money is used to pay the teachers and other public officials. Years ago the government made money from the sale of public lands. But most of the best public lands has now been sold. The money raised was used to help pay the cost of government. There are still some public lands that contain oil, coal, gas, and other natural products. They could be sold, but we want to save them for future year. So we all must pay our share for the services that make our lives comfortable. We use all sort of services without thinking about how we get them. But such services cost money. 听力题 It was not until one hundred and fifty years ago that scientists learned about the existence of dinosaurs. Thanks to an English doctor and his wife, the door was opened to this zoological study. Reasoning that these animals'' tremendous size must have made them terrible creatures, scientists combined two Greek words, deimos, meaning terrible, and sar-os, meaning lizards, to form the word dinosaur. After many years of study, they determined that these beasts roamed the earth for millions of years, and ceased to exist some sixty million years ago. Unbelievable as it may seem, not all dinosaurs were carnivorous, that is, meat eating. Many were herbivorous, or vegetarians. By reassembling the bones found at digging sites, scientists have been able to reconstruct the skeletons and learn great deal about the dinosaur''s living conditions. They have learned that dinosaurs inhabited not only the land, but also the water and sky. It was not until one hundred and fifty years ago that scientists learned about the existence of dinosaurs. 听力题 Villages in developing countries often lack many things: books, clean water, electricity. These shortages are easy to see. But a different kind of shortage is not easy to see. This is a shortage of experts. Many villages have no doctors, engineers or scientists. They have no one who knows how to treat unusual medical problems or design a new energy system. There''s a way to ease these problems. They can do it with computers. In the past few years, computer scientists around the world have developed what they call expert systems. An expert system is a special kind of computer program. In some situations, it can take the place of a human expert. For example, an expert in a medical system can help care for a sick person. A question appears on the computer screen, “Is the person hot?” You tell the computer either yes or no. The computer asks other questions. “Has the person lost any blood?” “Can the person move normally?” You answer. The computer continues to ask questions until it has enough information to make a decision. Then it tells what medicine or other treatment is needed. In this way the expert system takes the place of a doctor. Another kind of expert system takes the place of an engineer. It measures the flow of water in a river. It tells if a dam can be built on the river. It also tells how much electricity can be produced. Still other kinds of expert systems help solve problems for farmers and owners of small businesses.
