听力题W: Hello, nice to meet you, Dr. Griffin
听力题W: Why is it that some people are always buying beyond their means? I mean, they do not make that much and spend half of their incomes on designer clothes as such.
M: My theory is that insecure people need to wear famous brand clothing to feel good. They want people to know that they are good enough to afford the best.
W: Well, I don’t agree that name brands are just for the insecure. I mean, I like my designer clothes too. I do think designer shoes are more comfortable.
M: So, you buy designer shoes for comfort? How about those ridiculous designer sweaters that have holes in them and shoes that have 25 cm heels? You surely aren’t saying that these things are functional.
W: I disagree. Most designer and brand-name items are actually not useless. What you see on the catwalks are just the extremes. What you find in the stores is more functional.
M: And not much less expensive! So don’t tell me that you’re into designer stuff.
W: Like I said, some things are worth spending the money on, like stylish but comfortable shoes. But I wouldn’t get designer underwear, for example. I mean, for one pair of brand-name underwear, I can buy 10 pairs of sturdy cotton underwear at the market, and just throw them into the wash and not be heartbroken if they change color. But I’d buy a brand-name washing machine because I believe they work longer.

听力题 With the steady increase in the amount of leisure time that people enjoy today, the importance of businesses that deal with leisure products and services is also steadily increasing. One of the biggest such industries is the tourist industry.
Providing transportation and accommodations for tourists — and guides, brochures, souvenirs — is one of the major industries in many countries. Since people are now having longer vacations and are more and more interested in seeing other parts of the world, this business will no doubt continue to grow. Another industry obviously devoted to leisure is entertainment. Movies, TV shows, concerts and plays are usually intended for our leisure.
The same can be said of most books, except textbooks. Professional sports make money because people pay to watch them in their free time. This list could be greatly extended. But even among these industries, we have mentioned only part of the picture. The people who make the TV sets and build the theatres and tourist hotels are as much a part of the leisure industry as the singers or the hotel clerks.

After that they work in hospitals as medical residents or doctors in training. Some people study and work for as many as 13 years before they begin their lives as doctors.
During their university years, people who want to become doctors study science intensively. They must study biology, chemistry and other sciences. If they do not, they may have to return to college for more education in science before trying to enter medical school.
There are 125 medical schools in the United States. It is difficult to gain entrance to them. Those who do the best in their studies have a greater chance of entering medical school. Each student also must pass a national examination to enter a medical school. Those who get top score have the best chance of being accepted. Most people who want to study medicine seek to enter a number of medical schools. This increase their chances of being accepted by one. In 1998, almost 47,000 people competed for about 17,000 openings in medical schools.

听力题M: Did you see that TV special on Norman Rockwell last night?
W: Yes, I did. It was really good, wasn''t it?
M: It sure was. I thought it was really interesting how he developed the paintings in states starting with photographs.
W: Yes, I did, too. It never occurred to me that he would have actually employed models.
M: I know. But it does make sense to use photographs of real people, to solve as many of the composition problems as possible before starting to paint.
W: True. Anyway, you know what I like most about his work?
M: What?
W: Well, when you look at one of the magazine covers, which magazine was it?
M: The Saturday Evening Post.
W: Yes, you can just tell what the people are thinking and feeling. The picture really tells a story.
M: You''re right. I like that, too. And to think that he created several hundred of those.
W: Amazing. Of course, that was over a period of almost sixty years, but still...
M: I''d like to see them when that exhibit comes to Miami.
W: What exhibit?
M: The one they mentioned after the special.
W: Oh. I must have turned it off before the announcement. I''d like to see it, too. Let''s go.
M: OK.
W: I''m sure we''ll appreciate it very much.M: Did you see that TV special on Norman Rockwell last night?

听力题 China announced Sunday its decision to lift retail diesel and gasoline prices for the first time in eight months, while setting up a mechanism to offer some subsidies to disadvantaged communities and public service sectors.
The recipients of the subsidies include grain growers, fishermen and fishing firms operating and farming offshore or in inland areas, using oil-driven fishing boats, state-owned forestry enterprises and nurseries of forestry centers, urban public transportation firms, said the commission.
It said the government will pay a number of subsidies directly to grain growers to reduce the impact of the price hikes of diesel oil and chemical fertilizers and other agricultural production materials.
For operators of rural passenger shipping business, the commission said the government will reduce the impact mainly through such measures as adjusting the charges of transportation, and offering proper amount of subsidies to those in difficulty.
The commission said local governments will offset the increased financial burden on taxi drivers in the urban areas mainly through readjusting the charges of transportation and imposing surcharge on fuel oil.
The Chinese government has ordered various localities to implement the measures on subsidies while price regulators at various levels should improve inspection and supervision of prices of processed oil to maintain the stability of the oil prices.

听力题 Some months ago my friend bought a new refrigerator, but became worried when it did not work properly.
The food did not keep well, the milk went sour quickly and the inside of the refrigerator had an unusual smell. My friend tried to do many different things to solve the problems. She checked every comer inside the fridge and wiped the refrigerator out with a wet cloth, all without success. This refrigerator would not work properly.
Finally, my friend decided she had had enough. She asked her son-in-law to find the paper with the shop guarantee on it. This guarantee said the shop promised to repair the refrigerator for free if it broke down in the first three months.
The son-in-law first had a look at the refrigerator to see what the problem was. To the amusement of all those present and the embarrassment of y friend, he found that she had plugged her refrigerator into the electric power plug in the wall, but had forgotten to switch the power on.
