听力题 Religious and private schools receive little or no support from public taxes in the United States. As a result, they are more expensive to attend. The religious schools in America are usually run by churches. Therefore they tend to be less expensive than private schools. When there is free education available to all children in the United States, why do people spend money on private schools? Americans offer a great variety of reasons for doing so. Some parents send their children to private schools because the classes there are usually smaller. In their opinion, the public schools in their area are not of high enough quality to meet their needs. Private schools in the United States range widely in size and quality, and they offer all kinds of programs to meet the needs of certain students. 听力题 We use all sorts of services without thinking how we get them. But such services cost money. We pay for them through taxes. What would happen if everyone in the city stopped paying taxes? The water supply would stop, the streets might not be cleaned, there would be no police force to protect people and property. The chief duty of every government is to protect persons and property. More than 3/4 of the money spent by our government is used for this purpose. The next largest amount of public money goes to teach and train our citizens. Billions of dollars each year are spent on schools and libraries. Public money is used to pay the teachers and other public officials. Years ago, the government made money from the sale of public lands. But most of the best public lands have now been sold. The money raised was used to help pay the cost of the government. There''re still some public lands that contain oil, ore, gas and other natural products. They could be sold, but we want to save them for the future. So we all must pay our share for the services that make our lives comfortable. We use all sorts of services without thinking how we get them. But such services cost money. 听力题 Some months ago my friend bought a new refrigerator, but became worried when it did not work properly. The food did not keep well, the milk went sour quickly and the inside of the refrigerator had an unusual smell. My friend tried to do many different things to solve the problems. She checked every comer inside the fridge and wiped the refrigerator out with a wet cloth, all without success. This refrigerator would not work properly. Finally, my friend decided she had had enough. She asked her son-in-law to find the paper with the shop guarantee on it. This guarantee said the shop promised to repair the refrigerator for free if it broke down in the first three months. The son-in-law first had a look at the refrigerator to see what the problem was. To the amusement of all those present and the embarrassment of y friend, he found that she had plugged her refrigerator into the electric power plug in the wall, but had forgotten to switch the power on. 听力题 London taxi drivers know the capital like the back of their hands. No matter how small and indistinct the street is, the driver will be able to get you there without any trouble. The reason London taxi drivers are so efficient is that they have all gone through a very tough training period to get a special taxi driving license. During this period, which can take from two to four years, the would-be taxi driver has to learn the most direct route to every single road and every important building in London. To achieve this, most learners go around the city on small motorbikes, practicing how to move to and from different points of the city. Learner taxi-drivers are tested several times during their training period by government officers. Their exams are a terrible experience. The officers ask you, "How do you get from Buckingham Palace to the Tower of London?" and you have to take them there in a direct line. When you get to the Tower, they would say "Well done." They would quickly move on the next question, after five or six questions, they would just say, "See you in two months'' time," and then you know the exam is over. Learner drivers are not allowed to work and earn money as drivers. Therefore, many of them keep their precious jobs until they obtain their license. The training can cost quite a lot, because learners have to pay for their own expense on the tests and medical exam. London taxi drivers know the capital like the back of their hands. 听力题 I will let you know that there''s a big difference between undergraduate and graduate school. Undergraduate school is very course-intensive. That''s all you do: go to classes and go to labs. In graduate school, you have a lot of free time. Much of your learning is self-initiated, and you''re typically taking a much lighter class load. This gives you more time for independent study and research. While you'' re in graduate school, you'' re going to have to develop yourself as a scientist. You do this by performing creative and thorough research and developing a reputation for being a good scientist. You''ll also be developing your speaking skills. You have to be comfortable in presenting your results and your research to very critical audiences. That''s very important. You also want to attend conferences where you can mingle with your peers and groups from other universities, because there will eventually be your colleagues at some point. Also, it''s important to attend seminars and colloquial that your university has. Not only does this keep you informed of what is the latest and greatest in your area, but also lets you hear about other unrelated areas as well. You can'' t be so focused; you have to have a broad base of knowledge. I will let you know that there''s a big difference between undergraduate and graduate school.
