听力题 The Coast Guard does what its name says: it guards the coasts of the United States. During a war, the Coast Guard becomes part of the United States Navy, and helps to protect against enemy attacks. In times of peace, however, The Coast Guard is part of the United States Department of Transportation. It has responsibility for many different duties. The Coast Guard can be found at many large lakes in America, as well as in coastal waters. It enforces laws controlling navigation, shipping, immigration, and fishing. It enforces other laws that affect the thousands of privately-owned boats in the United States. Coast Guard planes, boats and helicopters search for missing boats and rescue people in dangerous situations. Last year, Coast Guardsmen saved the lives of almost 7,000 people.
The Coast Guard does scientific research on the ocean. It also uses ice-breaking boats to clear ice from rivers or lakes, so boats can travel safely. One of The Coast Guard''s most important duties now is helping to keep illegal drugs out of the United States. Coast Guard boats, armed with guns, use radios and radar to find boats that may be carrying drugs. They stop the boats suspected of carrying drugs and search them. They seize the drugs and arrest the people on the boats. Last year, Coast Guardsman seized more than 800,000 kilograms of marijuana and cocaine. And they arrested more than 700 persons trying to bring illegal drugs into the United States.
This kind of action is exiting. Most of the time, however, Coast Guardsman say they see nothing more exciting than the ocean.

听力题 A young man who refused to give his name dived into the river yesterday morning to save a twelve-year-old boy. The boy ran away after he was rescued. He had been swimming in the river and had caught his foot between two concrete posts under the bridge. He shouted out for help.
At the time a young man was riding across the bridge on his bicycle. He quickly got down and dived into the river. He then freed the boy''s foot and helped him to the river bank where a small crowd had collected. The boy thanked his rescuer sincerely. Then ran off down the road. He was last seen climbing over a gate before disappearing over other top of the hill.
The young man who was about 20 years of age said, "I don''t blame the boy for not giving his name. Why should he? If he wants to swim in the river, that''s his business. And if I want to help him, that''s mine. You can not have my name either." He then ran back to the bridge, got on his bicycle and rode away.

听力题W: David! Can I give you a hand with one of those grocery bags?
M: Sure, Nancy! Could you take this one, please? I didn''t realize how heavy these bags would be.
W: Why did you buy so much stuff when you have to walk home from the store?
M: Well, I didn''t intend to buy a lot — but I''m having some people over and I guess I needed more than I expected.
W: What''s the occasion?
M: The people I live with, the Kramers, have been on vacation for a month and I thought I''d surprise them. I''m inviting some of their friends and family for a welcome-home dinner.
W: That''s really thoughtful of you.
M: I figure it''s the least I can do for them. They''ve been letting me stay with them rent-free while I''m in school.
W: Really? That''s pretty generous of them.
M: Well, they understand how difficult it is to make ends meet when you''re a student. They''ve been such a big help to me, I thought that this might be a small way to thank them for their generosity.

听力题One winter day in 1891
听力题 A friend of mine told me that when he was a young man, he went to work as a teacher in one of the states of India. One day, he received an invitation to dinner at the ruler''s palace. Very pleased, he went to tell his colleagues. They laughed, and told him the meaning of the invitation. They had all been invited, and each person who was invited had to bring with him a certain number of silver and gold coins. The number of coins varied according to the person''s position in the service of the government. My friend''s income was not high, so he did not have much to pay. Each person bowed before the ruler. His gold went onto one heap; his silver went onto another heap. And in this way he paid his income tax for the year. This was a simple way of collecting income tax. The tax on property was also collected simply. The ruler gave a man the power to collect a tax from each owner of land or property in a certain area, if this man promised to pay the ruler a certain amount of money. Of course, the tax collector managed to collect more money than he paid to the ruler. The difference between the sum of money he collected and the sum of money he gave to the ruler was his profit. 听力题 I had to go to Amsterdam last week for a conference. I arrive at the airport in plenty of time and checked in, but I only had one small case so I decided to take it on the plane as hand luggage. As the flight was not due to board for 45 minutes, I went to a cafe, sat down, and ordered a cup of coffee.
While I was sitting there drinking my coffee and reading the paper, I was vaguely aware of a woman and her child coming to sit at the next table. I did not pay much attention to them, though, and when my flight was called I reached for my case and left.
An hour later, the plane was in the air and I decided to look at the conference program to see what J wanted to attend Imagine my horror when I opened the case and found that it was full of picture books and children''s toys — and imagine what the woman must have thought about a case full of men''s clothes and scientific papers!
