听力题 Today''s first-aid topic is about handling a choking incident. In terms of the environment in which it occurs, choking is one of the strangest and most unusual of medical emergencies. First, it generally occurs in happy, lighthearted circumstances, when everything appears to be going right. For example, choking incidents often take place at parties, where there are lots of people laughing and having a good time. Second, choking can happen to anyone, young or old, sick or well, alone or with others, at other time. Everybody should know what action to take in the event of a choking incident. It could happen to someone you know, or even to you, at any time. Today''s first-aid topic is about handling a choking incident. Perhaps the easiest choice has to do with (37)________. One husband said, "Marge and I decided after careful consideration that for her to go back to work at this moment was an extravagance we couldn''t (38)________." With two preschool children, it soon became clear in their figuring that with babysitters, (39)________, and increased taxes, rather than having more money by having a working mother, they might (40)________end up with less.
Economic factors are usually the first to be (41)________, but they are not the most important. The most important aspects of the decision have to do with the (42)________needs of each member of the family. It is in this area that husbands and wives find themselves having to face many confusing and (43)________feelings.
There are many women who find that homemaking is boring or who feel imprisoned if they have to stay home with a young child or several children. (44)________________.
From my own experience, I would like to suggest that sometimes the decision to go back to work is made in too much haste. (45)________________. I wasn''t mature enough to see how much I could have gained at home. I regret my impatience to get on with my career. (46)________________.
听力题 Men and women in the United States who want to become doctors usually attend four years of college or university; next they study for four years in a medical school. After that they work in hospitals as medical residents or doctors in training. Some people study and work for as many as 13 years before they begin their lives as doctors.
During their university years, people who want to become doctors study science intensively. They must study biology, chemistry and other sciences. If they do not, they may have to return to college for more education in science before trying to enter medical school.
There are 125 medical schools in the United States. It is difficult to gain entrance to them. Those who do the best in their studies have a greater chance of entering medical school. Each student also must pass a national examination to enter a medical school. Those who get top score have the best chance of being accepted. Most people who want to study medicine seek to enter a number of medical schools. This increase their chances of being accepted by one. In 1998, almost 47,000 people competed for about 17,000 openings in medical schools.

听力题 The Golden Gate Bridge joins the beautiful city of San Francisco with the suburbs to the north. Each day about 100,000 automobiles cross the bridge, taking people to and from the city. More than half of them cross the bridge during the morning and evening rush hours. When traffic is so heavy the trip is not pleasant. Now, however, there is at least one group of happy commuters.
These are the people who travel under the bridge instead of on it. They go to work by boat and enjoy it so much that most of them say they will never go by car again. The ferry they take is spacious, quiet and comfortable. Commuters can enjoy the sun on the deck. In the morning they can have breakfast in the coffee shop. And in the evening they can order a drink in the bar while looking at the beautiful scenery. The trip takes only 30 minutes and is not very costly. Best of all, being on a boat seems to make people more friendly toward each other.
There has already been a marriage of two commuters who met on the ferry. Because the ferry has been so successful, there are plans to use other still larger boats. There is a proposal for a high speed boat that will make the trip in only 15 minutes. But not everyone is happy about that. A lot of people feel that half an hour is just enough time to relax.

听力题 In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor''s degree.
Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act as machines.
One type of test is sometimes called an objective test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer.

听力题 Books which give instructions on how to do things are very popular in the United States today. Thousands of How-to books are useful: in fact, there are about four thousand books with tittles that begin with the word how to earn more money, another may tell you how to save or spend it, and another may explain how to give your money away.
Many how-to books give advice on careers. They tell you how to choose a career and how to succeed in it. If you fail, however, you can buy a book called How to Turn Failure into Success. If you would like to become rich, you can buy the book How to Make a Millionaire. If you never make any money at all, you may need a book called How to Live on Nothing.
One of the most popular types of books is one that helps you with personal problems. If you want to have a better love life, you can read How to Succeed in Love Every Minute of Your Life. If you are tired of books on happiness, you may prefer a book called How to Make Yourself Miserable.
Many of these books help people use their time better. Some people want books which will give them useful information about sports, hobbies and travel. Other people use their free time to make repairs and improvements on their homes. They prefer books which give step by step instructions on how to repair things like plumping and electrical wiring, or how to redecorate or enlarge a house.
Why have How-to books become so popular? Probably because life has become so complex. Today people have far more free time to use, more choices to make, and more problems to solve. How-to books help people deal with modern life.

听力题If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, (36)________to your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky.
If you say to your children "I''m sorry I got (37)________with you, but..." what follows that "but" can render the apology ineffective; "I had a bad day" or "your (38)________was giving me a headache" leaves the person who has been injured feeling that he should be (39)________for his bad behavior instead of expecting an apology.
Another method by which people appear to apologize without (40)________doing so is to say "I''m sorry you''re upset"; this suggests that you are somehow at (41)________for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.
Then there is the general, all (42)________apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was (43)________hurtful or insulting, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again. (44)________________.
But even when presented with examples of genuine contrition, children still need help to become aware of the complexities of saying sorry. (45)________________. And that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoiling other children''s expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that raiding the biscuit tin without asking permission is acceptable, (46)________________.

听力题 Florida International University has opened what it says is the first computer art museum in the United States. You don''t have to visit the university to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone. You call the telephone number of a university computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, created electronically by artist on their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings.
Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he started the museum because computer artists had no place to show their work and he just wants to help them to some extent.
A computer artist could only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs, to others to see on their computers. He could also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures on paper, the computer artist needed an expensive laser printer.

听力题 Speed skating has been a Winter Olympic event for many years, but in recent years, conditions on the ice tracks used by speed skaters have gotten better. Until the most recent Winter Olympics, speed-skating events were held outdoors. Conditions on outdoor ice tracks vary from hour to hour, depending on the weather. On indoor tracks, conditions can be controlled, giving all skaters an equal opportunity to skate at the top of their form. On indoor tracks, a constant temperature of 20 degrees Fahrenheit can be maintained. This is important because if the ice is too cold, it forms frost, slowing down the skaters, and it chips easily. If the temperature is too high, the ice begins to melt. Also, ice tracks today are made with extremely pure water. Minerals in water make ice soft, and soft ice doesn''t provide enough resistance for skaters. Recent improvements in making and maintaining ice will almost certainly lead to new world records in speed skating in the near future.
