听力题M: The Energy Minister announced at a press conference yesterday, the construction of three more nuclear power stations. These will form a vital part of the government''s energy plans for the next two decades and are needed to satisfy the country''s growing demands for electricity. The plans were strongly criticized by opposition MP''s as well as anti-nuclear and environmentalist groups. W: They must be absolutely mad. More nuclear power stations! M: OK. Jane. But we''ve got to get the energy from somewhere, haven''t we? We can''t just go on using oil and coal. W: Look. The main point is they''re just not safe. They''re a real menace. Every one of these things is an accident waiting to happen. Look at Chernobyl, for goodness'' sake! M: Yes, OK. I agree there''s a risk. Of course there is. But it''s minimal. With modem technology, nuclear reactors are much safer. W: Much safer! You must be joking. No. Look at all that radioactive waste they''re dumping into the sea and underground. Nobody really knows what''ll happen long-term. M: That is a problem. Sure. But it''s also true that nuclear energy is cheap and can produce electricity very quickly. Lots of countries have no alternatives. They don''t have any oil, coal or anything. What are they supposed to do? W: Oh, come on! There''re lots of possibilities. Well, quite a few. We just haven''t really looked at them seriously enough. There''s solar energy, and wind power and, what''s called, wave power. We''ve still got a lot of coal. W: Alright. But they''ll all take time and money to develop. We need energy now and nuclear power is the best alternative. M: Oh, I don''t believe this. I reckon it''s just crazy. 听力题 Indian summer is a short period of extremely fair weather and mild days in autumn. It comes in late October or early November while the leaves are changing color and falling from the trees. It has no definite day of beginning or ending. The pleasant weather follows the autumn''s first period of cold, wintry days. The days become warmer but the nights remain chilly. An Indian summer moon often has a soft yellow or orange hue. Indian summer lasts from a week to ten days and sometimes for two weeks. Then winter starts. Indian summer is caused by a large mass of warm tropical air. South winds carry these masses northward. The American Indian enjoyed Indian summer and called it a gift of a favorite God, Cautantowwit, the god of the southwest. 听力题 Our family is trying to decide where to go for our vacation this summer. Our son Tom wants to go to Yellowstone Park again to see the bears. We did that last summer, and what an experience it was! When we got there we put up our tent and went to explore. As we returned, we heard our daughter Susie cry out and then we saw a bear enter our camp. Tom wanted his father to chase him away. His father said, “No! It’s dangerous to chase a bear. And don’t let him chase you.” Susie said, “What shall we do? Maybe we ought to climb a tree.” Tom said, “No, we’ve got to get him out of there. He might go to sleep in our tent.” “Maybe we could make him leave if we put some honey outside for him to eat,” Susie suggested. Then I said, “How are you going to get the honey? It’s in the tent.” We watched the bear enter the tent and heard him upset everything inside. “It’s foolish for us to try to catch him,” said my husband. “Leave him alone and wait for him to come out.” We waited, but the bear stayed inside. We had to sleep in the car. Our family is trying to decide where to go for our vacation this summer. Our son Tom wants to go to Yellowstone Park again to see the bears. 听力题 The Golden Gate Bridge joins the beautiful city of San Francisco with the suburbs to the north. Each day about one hundred thousand automobiles cross the bridge taking people to and from the city. More than half of them cross the bridge during the morning and evening rush hours when traffic is so heavy the trip is not pleasant. Now however there is at least one group of happy commuters. These are the people who travel under the bridge instead of on it They go to work by boat and enjoy it so much that most of them say they will never go by car again. The ferry they take is spacious, quiet and comfortable. Commuters can enjoy the sun on the deck. In the morning they can have breakfast in the coffee shop. And in the evening they can order a drink in the bar while looking at the beautiful scenery. The trip takes only 30 minutes and is not very costly. Best of all, being on a boat seems to make people more friendly toward each other. There has already been a marriage of two commuters who met on the ferry. Because the ferry has been so successful, there are plans to use some larger boats. There is also a proposal for a high speed boat that will make the trip in only 15 minutes. But not everyone is happy about that. A lot of people feel that half an hour is just enough time to relax.
