填空题{{B}}Section A{{/B}} Directions: In this section, there is a short passage with 5 questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. Any video games feature a strong power-up that makes the player impervious to damage, at least for a while. As the economic crisis hit in late 2008, some said the same about the industry itself. The theory went that sales of video games, which had been strong in 2008, would also be strong in 2009, because games are a relatively cheap form of entertainment that let people escape from gloomy economic reality. At first glance the sales figures seem to reveal the idea that video games are recession-proof. In June 2009, for example, sales of games in America were 31% lower than in June 2008, according to NPD, a market-research firm. In July sales were down 26%, the fifth successive monthly decline. But the year ended with a record-breaking December, as people bought consoles (游戏控制台)and games for Christmas. Globally, says Piers Harding-Rolls of Screen Digest, a consultancy, sales of games were down by 6.3% in 2009. In some respects, this stumble reflects gaming's new popularity. When it was less of a mainstream activity it was not so connected to the wider economic cycle. The success of the family-friendly games have broadened gaming's appeal, but the new players they have attracted are less keen garners who are more likely to cut back in hard times. During 2009 more people turned to mobile, web-based or second-hand games, says Mr. Harding-Rolls. Another way of looking at things, however, is to say that spending on gaming is driven by big hits, and that the slight decline in 2009 reflects creative rather than economic weakness. Entertainment industries always have their ups and downs, says Shigeru Miyamoto, the creative force behind many of biggest games. There was an unusually large number of hits in 2008, which boosted sales, and fewer big releases in 2009 until late in the year, which may explain the weak mid-year sales. The top 20 games took a larger share of sales in 2009 than in 2008, which shows that the games industry, like the film industry, is becoming increasingly polarized between hits and misses. Hence the hit-and-miss results of the big publishers of video games. Overall, says Mr. Miyamoto, 2009's crop of games may just have been less compelling. "We were not able to produce fun-enough products," he says. That highlights the importance of continued innovation, he says—but it leaves unanswered question of whether gaming is indeed recession-proof.

填空题 The U.S. government is asking Americans to eat less and exercise more in an effort to stem the country's increasing epidemic of obesity. It has issued revised dietary recommendations that emphasize proper nutrition, more physical activity, and personal initiative in maintaining a healthy weight. U. S. law requires the government to revise its dietary guidelines every five years to keep up with the latest scientific research. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, whose agency is responsible for promoting healthy nutrition, says this year's update is an effort to reverse a situation where two-thirds of Americans are too heavy. The new dietary guidelines are part of the ongoing effort to help Americans adopt and keep healthier lifestyles and to address the epidemic of overweight and obesity that is affecting so many, especially our nation's children. Secretary Veneman acknowledges that the food recommendations have not changed much over the years. They still call for diets rich in a variety of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and limits on fatty foods and salt. This year, however, they place stronger emphasis on the importance of balancing energy intake and output, calling on people to cut their calorie consumption and exercise more. The guidelines urge adults to exercise at least moderately for no less than 30 minutes a day and children, 60 minutes daily. The U. S. agriculture official acknowledges that past government efforts to promote a healthy diet have failed, although she notes that the public recognizes the importance of weight control as shown by the strength of the multi-billion dollar diet industry. Clearly people are reaching out for information. Have we been successful in the past? I mean certainly we've had dietary guidelines and yet we still see increasing overweight and obesity in this country. There's not going to be a pill! So let's face it, America. There is more information out there, but it always comes back to: Eat your fruits and vegetables, watch your calorie intake, and exercise. That's as simple as it can be! Mr. Thompson says U. S. food manufacturers are responding to the need for healthier diets, especially for children. Many have reduced the amount of sugar in children's breakfast cereals and! Are promoting the whole grain and vitamin content of other foods. And as the government issued its new dietary guide lines, one of the largest U. S. food companies, Kraft, announced that it will restrict advertising of snack foods to children 12 and under and market its healthier products to this age group.

填空题As the automobile industry sheds jobs, it comes as good news that over the last decade or so the Internet has created 1.2 million jobs, many paying higher salaries than average, a new study finds. Internet business contributes 2.1%, or $ 300 billion, to the total GDP of the U. S. And IT and related online business may be faring better in this recession than they did in the dotcom bubble of 2000-2002, still growing revenue but at slower pace. Consumers are now making 10% of their retail purchases online, with the exception of groceries, on the Internet, and Internet-based advertising has increased four-fold since 2002 to more than $ 20 billion, said John Deighton, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, and one of the authors of the study along with Hamilton Consultants Inc. The study, considered independent, attempts to measure the so-called Internet economy. It was prepared for the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) in New York, which represents a variety of Internet and media companies. It does not raise policy implications, but IAB officials said the data will help them make the case for self-regulation on issues such as privacy. Randall Rothenberg, president and CEO of IAB, said the report is the "first rigorous, comprehensive look at the size, scope and impact of the interactive advertising ecosystem." Deighton said the finding could help make the case for a move away from employer-based health care, which he called something out of the Middle Ages, to a system that is good for people to start new businesses without having to provide health coverage. The study's job estimate is based on people who work directly in building or maintaining the Internet's infrastructure, conduct advertising and commerce over it, and other direct uses. The number of indirect jobs supported by Internet-related activities may raise the total number of jobs by 1.54 million, or to slightly more than 3 million supported jobs. E-commerce companies, as well as those that deliver the physical goods, were the major employers, with more than 500,000 of the 1.2 million jobs. Internet service providers followed at 181,000. Content-related employment was estimated at nearly 60,000, and software as a service, 31,500. John Yaglenski, who runs the independent Walt Disney World travel information site Intercot. com, along with 35 volunteers, was at the announcement today and said that that regulation that imposes new requirements and restricts information collection could have a serious impact. Yaglenski said he has privacy policies clearly outlined on his site and believes the industry can regulate itself. "If the government steps in and regulates the industry to the degree that it has done in some other areas, it could really affect our livelihood," he said.
