Is Science an evil thing or a good thing? This has been an intensely discussed question for years. The following are the supporters' and opponents' opinions. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization, language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.YES Advances in technology have increased the destructive capacity of conflict by enabling killing to occur much more rapidly, as can be seen by the destruction of the First and Second World Wars with their unprecedented number of deaths. Besides, with the help of modern technology, Weapons of Mass Destruction have been developed, which has raised the threat of total global destruction. Science has produced the means for more suffering in an almost infinite capacity, which surely outweighs the benefits towards healing the sick. What's more, the pursuit of industrialization and the use of modern technology require the generating of enormous amounts of energy. Such production creates severe damage to the environment via pollution. The damage to the environment also threatens to leave the earth uninhabitable, which would also harm humanity's interests.NO Science is the discovery and use of knowledge. It is how we became the dominant species on earth, by using tools and techniques to improve our living standards and take control of our environment. Technological advances have enabled humans to become removed from the basic toil needed to survive and to consider other pursuits, so for example we no longer work all day every day as we are more productive. We are now able to pursue our desires or consider great questions. Science has created modern communication systems which allow individuals to communicate across the globe with friends and relatives. Communications also allow humanity to deal with wider problems collectively where this was previously impossible. One example is collective action to deal with natural disasters such as flooding or tsunamis. Aid is flown in from around the world and millions donate the necessary funds after seeing the suffering on their TV screens.

A small group of salt-and-pepper haired women who live outside Jackson, Mississippi, meet every other Tuesday at the local antique store for their M. E. N. 3. A. gathering. The Most Exclusive National Shopping Association has met consistently for the past three years, but some of its members have been close for more than 50. Margaret Collins Jenkins, 58, is president. After shopping, when the meeting ends, the 10-15 member group goes to dinner. Though Jenkins says the group laughs and carries on, this is more than just a club. These women work to preserve the friendships they've cultivated over a lifetime. "Having friends that extend over decades, they more or less know your history. They know your ins and outs and ups and downs of your life, " Jenkins said. "That just makes us be able to build each other up. Those friends that know your history, they can't be replaced." The group's shared experiences are what sustain them through life changes like child rearing, divorce and death. And they're key elements to building a sense of community and a healthy lifestyle, experts say. Dr. James House, from the University of Michigan, has researched the health benefits of meaningful relationships. He says a lack of social interactions is predictive of poor health and earlier death for most people. House contends that keeping in contact with others is likely to regulate a person's own behaviors so that it becomes harder to slip into poor health habits. The M. E. N. S. A. ladies strive to stay active and connected. One snapshot can convey decades of friendship: That weekend trip to New Orleans. Those painting sessions, loosely referred to as art lessons. Christmas spent dressed as fairies. This particular set of Southern ladies didn't meet on Facebook. Their connections to each other happened over time. Some of the women work together as teachers; others go to the same church. A few are neighbors. Sherry Downs, 57, says she relies on her closest friends to carry her through life's twists and turns, big and small. "We believe in each other about everything and we value each others' opinions, " Downs says. "I just about won't take a step without asking one of them, 'Which way do I go?'" Jenkins, a school teacher who moved into the community nearly 40 years ago, says she's been able to rely on her longtime confidants during the darkest periods of her life. "I went through a divorce. They were there, so sturdy and so dependable in every way, " she says. " Did they stop including me in the group? No. They included me and made a special effort to make me not feel like the third wheel. I never was left out. They supported me not only in words but in their actions. " As we age, we begin to feel liberated from past patterns and habits, says Rebecca G. Adams, a sociology and gerontology(老年学)professor and expert on friendship at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Markers of aging, such as retirement or widowhood, trigger a period of transition, change and redirection. After raising children and devoting time to building careers, Adams says, there is a reinvestment in what one feels is important, such as dear friendships. "Like anything you do in life, it requires work, " Jenkins says. "A lot of people I think wonder why they don't have those kinds of friends, and it's because it takes work. "

In these days, lots of popular historical TV dramas, including some famous time-travel TV dramas, are being criticized for seriously distorting history. Chinese regulators have imposed tough new regulation on the production of such TV dramas because these time-travel TV dramas lack " positive thoughts and meaning". This regulation arouses debates among people. Should TV dramas strictly adhere to true history? Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. YES There should be a clear bottom line for the historical TV dramas, as they should not go so far as to insult the intelligence of the audience. Some periods in Chinese history are worth remembering as important pieces of history, not something to be spoofed. When it comes to some famous historical figures who have made great contribution to our nation, the drama should tell the truth. If the drama just makes up the stories and tempers with the historical facts, then it will mislead the audience, especially the young students. Entertainment doesn't mean that the directors can add any funny elements to the drama without considering the facts of history. TV dramas, as an important way of entertainment, must also be educative and meaningful. It is irritating that some screenplays distort the history intentionally just to draw people's attention. NO TV dramas are different from documentaries. Dramas are meant to be entertaining, not necessarily educative. When the audience watch TV dramas, they simply want to relax themselves, not to learn history from them. Even if the historical drama is based on history, there are some fictional components in it. After all, TV drama is a form of art and literature that is mainly composed of fiction and supplemented by historical facts. The plot of the story is the core of a drama, and the building of characters and the thoughts behind the story are what the audience care about. Whether it adheres to the history is not the main concern for the audience. It is impossible for TV dramas to be in accordance with the history. No one can tell exactly what was said or done at a point in history.

After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.Diffusion EffectDepending on the context, the term "diffusion effect" has a large number of possible meanings. In medical, psychological and sociological research, however, the term refers to inappropriate contact between study groups. Ideally, of course, groups of subjects should be completely unaware of each others' existence. Failing this, it is an absolutely essential minimum requirement that no exchange of information between or about the groups take place. This is so since such information, in effect, "taints" any data obtained from the group.
