(l)Roger Rosenblatt's book Black Fiction, in attempting to apply literary rather than sociopolitical criteria to its subject, successfully alters the approach taken by most previous studies. As Rosenblatt notes, criticism of Black writing has often served as an excuse for expounding on Black history. Addison Gayle's recent work, for example, judges the value of Black fiction by overtly political standards, faring each work according to the notions of Black identity which it put forward. (2)Although fiction assuredly springs from political circumstances, its authors react to those circumstances in ways other than ideological, and talking about novels and stories primarily as instruments of ideology limits much of the fictional enterprise. Rosenblatt's literary analysis discloses relations and connotations among works of Black fiction which solely political studies have overlooked or ignored. (3)Writing acceptable criticism of Black fiction, however, presupposes giving satisfactory answers to a number of questions. First of all, is there a sufficient reason, other than the racial identity of the authors, to group together works by Black authors? Second, how does Black fiction make itself distinct from other modern fiction with which it is largely contemporaneous? Rosenblatt's idea shows that Black fiction constitutes a distinct body of writing that has an identifiable, coherent literary tradition. Looking at novels written by Blacks over the last eighty years, he discovers recurring concerns and designs independent of chronology. These structures are thematic, and they spring, not surprisingly, from the central fact that the Black characters in these novels exist in a predominantly Witte culture, whether they try to conform to that culture or rebel against it. (4)Black Fiction does leave some aesthetic questions open. Rosenblatt's thematic analysis permits considerable objectivity; he even states that it is not his intention to judge the merit of the various works—yet his reluctance seems misplaced, especially since an attempt to appraise might have led to interesting results. For instance, some of the novels appear to be structurally diffused. Is this a defect, or are the authors working out of, or trying to create, a different kind of aesthetic? In addition, the style of some Black novels, like Jean Toomer's Cane, verges on expressionism or surrealism; does this technique provide a counterpoint to the popular theme that describes the fate against which Black heroes are struggling, a theme usually conveyed by more naturalistic modes of expression? (5)In spite of such omissions, what Rosenblatt does include in his discussion makes for a keen and worthwhile study. Black Fiction surveys a wide variety of novels, bringing to our attention in the process some fascinating and little-known works like James Weldon Johnson's Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man. Its argument is tightly constructed, and its forthright, clear style exemplifies levelheaded and penetrating criticism.

Many people believe that marrying a foreigner makes it easier for one to learn a foreign language and is a shortcut to blend into another culture. Is intercultural marriage really a good thing? The following are the supporters' and opponents' opinions. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization, language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.YES With the convenience of the Internet, the mixed marriage is not only about love, it's about the whole package you can get from it People involved in it get a shortcut to blend into the mainstream, which brings them huge advantages to advance their careers, especially in corporations, the language and culture advantages. Besides, an interracial marriage has its own benefits. With a couple from different countries bound together in wedlock, they could improve their understanding of the history, culture, and customs of each other's countries. They might learn some advantages from each other's cultures, consequently, blending into another culture more easily.NO Although a mixed marriage may seem as dreamily beautiful as a fairy tale, the tale is often based on romantic imagination rather than on reality. Different cultures, tastes, life experiences, eating and living habits like strong waves, may wash the dream away as soon as the weather becomes stormily. Asian cultures prefer the solidarity within the family. People tend to be interdependent and supportive. In contrast, western culture is rooted in individualism. The Chinese are often rudely disillusioned by such discoveries after their marriages. Thus a mixed marriage is not a shortcut to blend into another culture.

(l)President will make his case for his $1.6 trillion tax cut plan, delivering a speech at a community center in St. Louis. The proposal would slash federal tax rates across all levels of income, eliminate the so-called marriage penalty and phase out estate taxes. Democrats complain that the plan—which would cut the top rate from 39 to 33 percent—would disproportionately benefit the wealthy and unnecessarily squander expected budget surpluses. Some of the richest Americans are urging Congress not to repeal the estate tax, The New York Times reported on Wednesday, Feb. 14. (2)About 120 wealthy Americans had signed or supported a petition to oppose phasing out the tax. The President has included the repeal of the tax in his $1.6 trillion tax cut proposal. Normally when "dozens" of Americans join in a political cause, it is not particularly noteworthy, but in this case the dozens include: George Soros, a billionaire financier; Warren Buffett, an investor listed as America's fourth-richest person; the philanthropist David Rockefeller Jr.; and William Gates Sr., a Seattle lawyer and father of America's richest man, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates. (3)It was refreshing to see Buffett and George Soros and a number of other extremely wealthy luminaries stand up in opposition to the President's proposed repeal of the estate tax. While the policy has some emotional attractions—it would protect the inheritors of some small businesses from having to sell the companies to pay taxes, and it is true that most people have been taxed on their savings once already—in practice the tax repeal would mainly be a windfall for a very small number of very, very rich people. (4)Buffett and company cite these factors in their petition calling for opposition to the estate-tax repeal. They also discuss something that's equally emotional and far more complex: the principle of meritocracy. The idea that everyone in America has an equal chance, that our fates are not determined by accidents of birth, is one of our core values. And nowhere is this principle more revered than in the technology economy; entrepreneurship is almost by definition an expression of meritocracy. (5)The petitioners argue that repealing the tax will cost the Treasury billions of dollars in lost revenues and will result in either increased taxes in the long run or cuts to Medicare, Social Security, environmental protection and other government programs. (6)Repealing the levy "would enrich the heirs of America's millionaires and billionaires, while hurting families who struggle to make ends meet," the petition says. (7)Buffett told the Times that repealing the estate tax would be a "terrible mistake" and the equivalent of "choosing the 2020 Olympic team by picking the eldest sons of the gold-medal winners in the 2000 Olympics." (8)An old brokerage commercial says: "He made his money the old-fashioned way: He earned it." There was a perfect parody of the ad in which the line read: "He made his money the old-fashioned way: He inherited it." In 20 or 50 or 100 years, which of these lines will be right? Buffett and Soros and friends, to their credit, want to help make the first one real. Let's hope this is only one step in that process.

There have been many news reports about the inappropriate behavior of Chinese tourists overseas, such as spitting, littering, jumping the queue, talking loudly in public, and carving characters in scenic spots. The Chinese National Tourism Administration recently announced that in order to improve the image of Chinese holidaymakers overseas, it will establish a " black list" for individuals engaging in uncivilized behavior, and the record will be kept for up to two years. Do you think the government should adopt this measure to prevent tourists' uncivilized behavior? Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. YES As an old saying goes, "Old habits die hard. " It would be difficult for some people to change their bad behavior. But if such behavior is outlawed and the law is strictly enforced, like in Singapore, it is possible to change people's bad behavior. The regulation of establishing a "black list" is a wise try to solve the problem. Some Chinese tourists' uncivilized behavior when traveling overseas has, to some extent, already affected the image of Chinese people. When tourists travel in a foreign country, what they say and do can represent the image of our whole country. With the policy of "black list" , people will better shoulder their responsibilities as a Chinese when traveling overseas. NO Establishing a "black list" may be a good plan, but it is difficult to be implemented. What kind of behavior will be regarded as severe? Who will monitor the tourists' behavior? These all need specific and detailed regulation. To monitor and evaluate tourists' behavior will cost much investment and energy. So the new policy is unlikely to yield concrete results. Setting up the "black list" cannot really solve the problem. With the " black list" , people will be afraid of behaving improperly in foreign countries, but they still do not know how they can behave properly. Education is what people really need. The government should enhance people's awareness of proper behavior.
