Smog subsidy for employees who work outdoors Severe air pollution and smog continues to haunt many Chinese cities, especially in northern and central China. As people grow more aware of health issues, there have been increasing calls for a special "smog subsidy"(雾霾津贴) for employees who have to work on smoggy days. Xie Chaohua, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), called for the introduction of a "smog subsidy" for those who work outdoors. Xie said at the CPPCC session that the key to his proposal is "protecting lungs from the impact of smog." The government should protect the public's right to breathe clean air, and a "smog subsidy" should be introduced for outdoor workers such as construction workers, sanitation workers, traffic police officers and couriers. With the subsidy, government can take the initiative to purchase health products such as lung-moistening medicines for those who bear the brunt of smoggy weather. In addition to the subsidy, Xie also called for the introduction of a "smog holiday" system for people who work outdoors. The Trade Union in Zhengzhou City, capital of Central China's Henan Province, has surveyed nearly 400 subscribers to its official WeChat account recently. The survey found that 95% of respondents support a "smog subsidy" for those who work outdoors. The survey also found that 88% of nearly 400 respondents said priority should be given to outdoor workers on smoggy days. However, 9% of respondents said air pollution affects everyone so it would be unfair to only address the concerns of people who work outdoors.

问答题2. 阅读经典 Read carefully the following excerpt on the value of reading literary works and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should: ●summarize the main message of the excerpt, and then ●comment on whether reading literary works should be promoted. You should support yourself with information from the excerpt. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. You Are What You Read Does reading make you a better person? Study suggests it depends on what you read. In 2012, when bookstores and book clubs were alight with talk of Gone Girl, a vital modifier was attached to descriptions of Flynn's fast-paced story: it's not just a thriller, it's a literary thriller. "Literary," in the case of a book about a marriage gone dismal, suggests that Flynn wasn't only concerned with what happens in the story; she was interested in the nuances of the characters' inner lives, too. Naturally, some writers who devote themselves to crafting straightforward thrillers (or romances, or fantasies) take issue with the "literary" distinction, because it undermines the value of their own work. And indeed, salient arguments have been made against genre categories, which are said to be more of a marketing tool than a useful means of sorting and suggesting books. But, according to a new study conducted by David Kidd and Emanuele Castano, books that carry the "literary" banner may offer unique benefits to readers. The pair asked over 1,000 participants to check off literary names they recognized before identifying the emotions being expressed in various photos, drawing a positive correlation between literary awareness and emotional intelligence. The study controlled for self-reported empathy levels, and still found that those who've read more literary fiction books in their lives were better at recognizing the emotions of others. In a report on the study in The Guardian, Kidd says: "Not all fiction draws on the same psychological processes in the same way over time. Habitual reading of literary fiction is associated with differences in interpersonal perception that are not associated with regularly reading genre fiction."

问答题1. 空巢老人使用智能产品 Read carefully the following excerpt on the importance of smart products to China's empty-nesters, and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should: ●summarize the main message of the excerpt, and then ●comment on how new technologies such as the Internet-based products mentioned in the excerpt benefit the aged. You should support yourself with information from the excerpt. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. The Smart Age for China's Empty-nesters Every time Ai Yuanxi turns on the TV, the first pictures she sees are those from her son. He lives in Berlin and sends pictures of her 16-month-old grandson to her TV every day. "It's amazing that you can receive pictures on TV," says the 65-year-old grandmother, who lives in east China's Hangzhou city. "It's handy and the pictures are way bigger than those on cell phones or computer screens. It's like my grandson is right in front of me." As China's population ages, some Internet-based products are becoming more user-friendly for the elderly who are less familiar with the technology. These smart products can help parents and their children maintain a comfortable distance, thus keeping close bonds without getting involved in each other's life too much. The number of empty-nesters is rapidly growing with young people leaving their rural hometowns to seek opportunities in the cities. In big cities, the problem is no less serious, but even more complicated, particularly among families with well-educated children, as their offsprings go abroad. Jiang Feng, founder of Judou Technology Company, says the buyers and users of the Judou TV box are different. The buyers are mostly in their 30s while the users are their parents who are in 60s. "Many children feel sorry about leaving their parents. The device offers a way to stay connected," Jiang says. The box enables young people to download a film from the Internet directly to their parents' TV, which might be thousands of kilometers away. Parents can video chat with the family on TV while the children can answer video calls on their cell phones any time. Jiang says old people are curious about new technology, just like young people, but the fear of being incompetent intimidates them. "So when designing products for them, my guiding principle is making them easy to use."

问答题1. Read carefully the following excerpt on commercialization of sports, and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should: ●summarize the main message of the excerpt, and then ●comment on whether the commercialization of sports is good or bad. You should support yourself with information from the excerpt. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Commercialization of Sports Today, it seems there is hardly any level of sports participation which does not have sponsorship or some variety of commercial venture. Sporting events, teams and even individual players wear logos on uniforms and appear in television advertising. This rise in commercialization has almost become part of the modern game, but it is important to remember it has positive and negative effects on the sport, the players and the fans. Commercialization is about media exposure for the sport. If a major company sponsors an event it is much more likely to get prime time television coverage, bringing in greater advertising revenues and exposing more people to the sport. With increased exposure of the game comes increased participation. For example, when a national team does well at the Olympics the number of children taking up the sport increases. This is at a time when there is national worry about the health of young people with regards to what they eat and the level of exercise they participate in. One of the main problems with increased commercialization from a fan's perspective is the feeling that the increased costs are passed on to them. Ticket prices, refreshments and team shirt prices have all gone up at the same time more and more advertising space is sold around the stadium and television rights are sold for almost every game. It has also been claimed in some sports that commercialization results in poorer player performance at international levels. Commercialization also offers a distraction from the game as the top name players are signed up by major labels to promote products.

问答题7. Now many parents are sending their sons and daughters to single-sex schools believing that the educational environment fostered by a single gender is more conducive to learning than a coeducational school. Is it really the case? The following are the supporters' and opponents' opinions. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. YES NO Boys and girls distract each other from their education, especially in adolescence as their sexu-al and emotional sides develop. Too much time can be spent attempting to impress or even sexu-ally harassing each other. Academic competition between the sexes is unhealthy and only adds to unhappiness and anxi-ety among weaker students. As Tricia Kelleher, a school principal, argues, "rather than girls defining themselves by their interests, they define them-selves by what the boys think of them or what other girls think boys think of them". Furthermore, John Silber, President of Boston University, declared that his university would pri-oritize male applications in order to even up the student composition and ensure the male popula-Lion did not become "ungentlemanly" towards women due to their numerical inferiority. A single-sex environment is therefore a space where chil-dren can learn without feeling pressurized by the other sex. In fact boys and girls are a good influ-ence on each other, engendering good behav-ior and maturity—particularly as teenage girls usually exhibit greater responsibility than boys of the same age. Academic competition between the sexes is a spur to better performance at school. Any negative effects of co-educational schools have been explained away by studies as the result of other factors, such as "classroom size, economic discrepancies and cultural differences". Furthermore, the separation of boys and girls only serves to embrace sexual objectifi-cation, for they exist for each other only as dates rather than the classmates they would be in a co-educational environment. Allowing them into the same educational environment, in part to permit them to distract each other, is a welcome social development as well as a beneficial learning curve.

Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Computers Books New technology is changing increasingly faster. It's necessary for students to use the best technology available, so schools should upgrade their computers if possible. Books are easily out of date. However, computers can offer access to up-to-date information and materials through the Internet. Finally, the computers are on demand. In today's society, it is necessary to grasp basic computer skills for you to attain a position in a company. If students do not have such skills, they will be left behind while others succeed in their place. Books are better than computers because books are convenient to carry. You can't surf the Internet if you can't get connected or without electricity. Computers could give you headaches because of the constant light going straight to your eyes. When you read a book, it's totally enjoyment. Information from the Internet could be wrong. In many cases the wrong information leads you to the wrong end. However, the content in books is revised and reviewed. So it is more reliable.

Read carefully the following excerpt on the revision of textbooks which increases the content of Chinese traditional culture and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should: ● summarize the main message of the excerpt, and then ● comment on why such revision is necessary. You should support yourself with information from the excerpt. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Revised Textbook Turns to Chinese Traditional Culture Chinese language textbooks in China's primary and secondary schools have been revised to focus more on traditional culture, according to an editor. Starting this autumn, more than four million first and seventh graders from Hunan, Henan, Guangdong, Liaoning and other provincial-level regions will use the new textbooks. According to Wang Xuming, president of the Language and Culture Press, 40 percent of the content in the previous edition has been changed. Traditional material makes up 30 percent of the revised primary school textbooks, while it increases to about 40 percent for secondary school textbooks. "We did so to address the needs of parents, who want their children to learn more about traditional culture," said a senior editor surnamed Zhu in charge of the middle school textbooks. "Now many people cannot even understand the language in classical Chinese books, and parents compete to send their children to commercial training centers for traditional culture," she said. China has seen a renewed interest in traditional education. A report by the Southern Metropolitan Daily said that China has more than 3,000 Sishu, or traditional private schools, in addition to training centers teaching students classical essays. "Demand for private education grows when teaching of traditional culture in public schools is not enough. What's more, the poetry and essays in the new textbooks were selected not only for students to learn the language, but also to instruct them on philosophy." Zhu said. Primary and middle schools in China had uniform textbooks before an education reform in 2001, which allowed schools in different provinces to use different textbooks. More than ten publishers have released their own textbooks. This is the first revision the press has made in more than a decade. They have replaced some outdated articles.
