问答题5. Read carefully the following excerpt on the importance of smart products to China's empty-nesters, and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should: ● summarize the main message of the excerpt, and then ● comment on how new technologies such as the Internet-based products mentioned in the excerpt benefit the aged. You can support yourself with information from the excerpt. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. The Smart Age for China's Empty-nesters Every time Ai Yuanxi turns on the TV, the first pictures she sees are those from her son. He lives in Berlin and sends pictures of her 16-month-old grandson to her TV every day. "It's amazing that you can receive pictures on TV," says the 65-year-old grandmother, who lives in east China's Hangzhou city. "It's handy and the pictures are way bigger than those on cell phones or computer screens. It's like my grandson is right in front of me." As China's population ages, some Internet-based products are becoming more user-friendly for the elderly who are less familiar with the technology. These smart products can help parents and their children maintain a comfortable distance, thus keeping close bonds without getting involved in each other's life too much. The number of empty-nesters is rapidly growing with young people leaving their rural hometowns to seek opportunities in cities. In big cities, the problem is no less serious, but even more complicated, particularly among families with well-educated children who are settled or working abroad. Jiang Feng, founder of Judou Technology Company, says the buyers and users of the Judou TV box are different. The buyers are mostly in their 30s while the users are their parents who are in 60s. ".Many children feel sorry about leaving their parents. The device offers a way to stay connected," Jiang says. The box enables young people to download a film from the Internet directly to their parents' TV, which might be thousands of kilometers away. Parents can video chat with their children on TV while the children can answer video calls on their cell phones any time. Jiang says old people are curious about new technology, just like young people, but the fear of being incompetent intimidates them. "So when designing products for them, my guiding principle is making them easy to use."

问答题2. Read carefully the following excerpt on the revision of textbooks which increases the content of Chinese traditional culture and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should: ● summarize the main message of the excerpt, and then ● comment on why such revision is necessary. You should support yourself with information from the excerpt. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Revised Textbook Turns to Chinese Traditional Culture Chinese language textbooks in China's primary and secondary schools have been revised to focus more on traditional culture, according to an editor. Starting this autumn, more than four million first and seventh graders from Hunan, Henan, Guangdong, Liaoning and other provincial-level regions will use the new textbooks. According to Wang Xuming, president of the Language and Culture Press, 40 percent of the content in the previous edition has been changed. Traditional material makes up 30 percent of the revised primary school textbooks, while it increases to about 40 percent for secondary school textbooks. "We did so to address the needs of parents, who want their children to learn more about traditional culture," said a senior editor surnamed Zhu in charge of the middle school textbooks. "Now many people cannot even understand the language in classical Chinese books, and parents compete to send their children to commercial training centers for traditional culture," she said. China has seen a renewed interest in traditional education. A report by the Southern Metropolitan Daily said that China has more than 3,000 Sishu, or traditional private schools, in addition to training centers teaching students classical essays. "Demand for private education grows when teaching of traditional culture in public schools is not enough. What's more, the poetry and essays in the new textbooks were selected not only for students to learn the language, but also to instruct them on philosophy." Zhu said. Primary and middle schools in China had uniform textbooks before an education reform in 2001, which allowed schools in different provinces to use different textbooks. More than ten publishers have released their own textbooks. This is the first revision the press has made in more than a decade. They have replaced some outdated articles.

问答题4. Should every student who study foreign language and culture spend a period of time studying and living in foreign country? This has been intensely discussed for years. The following are the supporters' and opponents' opinions. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. YES NO When we study a foreign language, it is very effective for us to go to the country in which the target language is spoken. In foreign country, we are sur- rounded by the language that we are learning, and we are forced to use it whether or not we want, so we can learn more rapidly and easily. In terms of culture, second hand experience is nowhere close to "experiencing the culture" in the native environment. In foreign countries, we can hear different opinions from what we have heard before and have an opportunity to ask the natives questions that we en- counter in studies. Given that leaming abroad does yield benefits, the question of "applicability" seems to be neglected. Students, with diverse academic interests and disci- plines, might not need to get in touch with exotic cultures or acquire foreign languages to the extent of working on them in foreign countries. Most foreign languages and cul- tures coveted by students originate from developed countries where tuition and life expenses are relatively high, which may add to heavy financial burden on students. It's very common that many students studying abroad never desire to go back to devote their life and energy to their countries because they have been accustomed to the foreign ad- vanced technology and lifestyle.

You should support yourself with in formation from the excerpt. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Juvenile delinquency: nature or nurture? Being a juvenile in any one's life is part of the stage of development. The behavior patterns of juveniles are influenced in part by what goes on in the environment in which they live. Every stage of development has transitions. Family members, friends, and peers all influence these times of transition for the juvenile. It is sometimes accompanied by a desire for material things, fashion, peer pressure, cash and more. At times, the demands of wants and needs are intensified by a society that consists of high mobility, social change, and is materialistic. Also, social changes can create anxiety and disillusionment for adolescents and thus they commit delinquent acts. Obviously, human beings tend to develop in different stages until they become adults. One of these stages is the adolescent stage. When humans are in the adolescent stage, they are considered juveniles. When a juvenile does something wrong, contrary to the laws or norms of the society, such as acts of vandalism, theft, drug related activity, arson or other anti-social behavior, he/she is then considered a juvenile delinquent. On the other hand, some scientists believe some are born to be criminals. Some teenagers may suffer from psychopathy—a disorder suffered by many (but not all) violent criminals—is characterized by an inability to "empathise". The researchers, based at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, said the differences in psychopaths' brains mark them out even from other violent criminals with anti-social personality disorders (ASPD), and from healthy non-offenders. Psychopaths have physically different brains from "normal" people—and may be born to kill. The new finding may mean that there is simply no point treating psychopaths with current "behavioural" treatments.

You can support yourself with information from the excerpt. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Experts Propose Chinese Mother's Day Cultural experts have suggested setting up a Chinese equivalent of Mother's Day, during a forum in eastern China's Shandong Province. Academics with the Chinese Academy of Mencius (CAM) proposed setting April 2 on the Chinese lunar calendar as Chinese Mother's Day at the forum that started Tuesday in Shandong's Zoucheng City, hometown of Mencius. Mencius (372-289 BC) was a pupil of Confucius' grandson, and travelled his life teaching Confucianism. Both Mencius and Confucius are ancient Chinese philosophers. Mencius' mother is regarded as one of the four great mothers in ancient China, and is seen as a symbol of Chinese mothers, known for her kindness, simplicity, diligence and strong will. Li Cunshan, CAM special deputy dean, said that more than 80 countries in the world had a Mother's Day, while China did not. "Many Chinese people show their affection to their mothers on the second Sunday of May, or Mother's Day that is originally celebrated in the United States," Li said. "We do expect to have our own Mother's Day." Li said that filial piety was a core concept in Chinese culture, and that it was Chinese people's aspiration to show piety to their mothers on the special day. Experts at the forum said that the achievements of Mencius were greatly influenced by his mother, and that China should set up a Chinese Mother's Day and make it a public holiday.
