单选题Who has never heard of King David? There are probably not too many Christians who have not heard of King David. What many Christians probably do not realize is that, until recently, other than David"s occurrence in the
Bible
, there has never been actual proof that he ever existed. Over the years this has given fuel to certain groups wishing to view the
Bible
as a huge trip into the allegorical. However, all of this changed in 1993. Recently, your author learned for the first time what I am going to attempt to tell about here. You might think that given your faith, it doesn"t really matter whether there is proof of David or not. But think for a moment of the implications of our
Bible
being definitively proven by actual physical evidence. It would be like having your cake, and someone putting icing on it!!!
In 1993 (as told in the March/April 1994 issue of
Biblical Archaeology Review
), Avraham Biran and his team of archaeologists unearthed a piece of stone with fragments of writing on it. In the writings was the words "House of David". It was the first mention of David in ancient inscription outside the
Bible
. The fragment was found at Tel Dan which lies by the head waters of the Jordan River, near Israel"s northern border. The large piece of basalt was part of what must have been a large monumental inscription. It contains 13 lines, but no single line is complete. The surviving letters are clear, however. Line 9 contains the words "House of David". After the complete translation, it was determined that the fragment was part of a victory stela erected in Dan by an Aramean boasting a military victory over the House of David. Many questions are raised as well as many possibilities upon comparing the fragment with the Biblical history. For instance the victory of the Aramean would conflict with the episode in the
Bible
. However as BAR points out, there were probably many battles and not all were recorded in the
Bible
. We do know that Israel must have regained control of Dan. This find would perhaps seem simple and to the point, but that is far from the truth. The find began a debate in earnest.
Immediately following the find, many came forward to state that the stone did not actually mention the "House of David." Along with this claim came the accusation that those believing that it did mention David were "Biblical Maximizers." The arguing was fast and furious. The debate inspired letters to the editors displaying the anger, emotion, and dismay from Christians. How could this new proof be denied? While the verbal debate raged, researchers and scientists quietly built a case on the very evidence the naysayers demanded. Another scholar, Andre" Lemaire wrote an article in BAR stating that there was another mention of David in an earlier find. It was called the Mesha Stela proclaiming victory for the Moabite king Mesha over the Israelites.
Then in the Impact section of our own
The State
in December of last year, an article appeared proclaiming that scientists have found that the
Bible
is built on facts as well as faith. Many fragments have been found in the same area, all mentioning David. Finally, scholars have reached the consensus that David was real, something many of us have never doubted, even before the stelas were found. Although scholars are not ready to admit the
Bible
is historically true across the board, they are willing to concede that the "
Bible
has a sound historical core." One thing is certain, these finds don"t only have repercussions in a religious sense, they reach into many domains—political, personal faith, historical. I can"t say in learning about these finds that my faith has grown any stronger, I can say that I have a new appreciation for the
Bible
as an accurate historical record as well as a basis of faith.

单选题You have been badly injured in a car accident. It is necessary to give you a blood transfusion because you lost a great deal of blood in the accident. However, special care must be taken in selecting new blood for you. If the blood is too different from your own, the transfusion could kill you. There are four basic types of blood: A, B, AB, and O. A simple test can indicate a person's blood type. Everybody is born with one of these four types of blood. Blood type, like hair color and height, is inherited from parents. Because of substances contained in each type, the four groups must be transfused carefully. Basically, A and B cannot be mixed. A and B cannot receive AB, but AB may receive A or B. O can give to any other group; hence, it is often called the universal donor. For the opposite reason, AB is sometimes called the universal recipient. However, because so many reactions can occur in transfusions, patients usually receive only salt or plasma (liquid) until their blood can be matched as exactly as possible in the blood bank of a reactions to the transfusion. There is a relationship between your blood type and your nationality. Among Europeans and people of European ancestry, about 42 percent have type A while 45 percent have type O. The rarest is type AB. Other races have different percentages. For example, some American Indian groups have nearly 100 percent type O.

The statistics I've cited and the
living examples are all too familiar to you. But what may not be so familiar
will be the increasing number of women who are looking actively for advancement
of a new job in your offices. This woman may be equipped with professional
skills and perhaps valuable experience. She will not be content to be Executive
Assistant to Mr. Seldom Seen or the Assistant Vice President's Girl Friday, who
is the only one who comes in on Saturday. She is the symbol of
what I call the Second Wave of Feminism. She is the modem woman who is
determined to be. Her forerunner was the radical feminist who
interpreted her trapped position as a female as oppression by the master class
of men. Men, she believed, had created a domestic, servile role for women in
order that men could have the career and the opportunity to participate in
making the great decisions of society. Thus the radical feminist held that women
through history had been oppressed and dehumanized, mainly because man chose to
exploit his wife and the mother of his children. Sometimes it was deliberate
exploitation and sometimes it was the innocence of never looking beneath the
pretensions of life. The radical feminists found strength in
banding together. Coming to recognize each other for the first time, they could
explore their own identities, realize their own power, and view the male and his
system as the common enemy. The fast phases of feminism in the last five years
often took on this militant, class-warfare tone. Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem,
Germaine Greer, and many others hammered home their ideas with a persistence
that aroused and intrigued many of the brightest and most able women in the
country. Consciousness-raising groups allowed women to explore both their
identities and their dreams — and the two were often found in direct
conflict. What is the stereotyped role of American women?
Marriage. A son. Two daughters. Breakfast. Ironing. Lunch. Bowling. Maybe a
garden club or the very dating, non-credit courses in ceramics. Perhaps an
occasional cocktail party. Dinner. Football or baseball on TV. Each day the
same. Never any growth in expectations — unless it is growth because the husband
has succeeded. The inevitable question: "Is that all there is to
life?" The rapid growth of many feminist organizations attests
to the fact that these radical feminists had touched some vital nerves. The
magazine "Ms." was born in the year of the death of the magazine "Life". But too
often the consciousness-raising sessions became ends in themselves. Too often
sexism reversed itself and man-hating was encouraged. Many had been with the
male chauvinist. It is not difficult, therefore, to detect a
trend toward moderation. Consciousness-raising increasingly is regarded as a
means to independence and fulfillment, rather than a ceremony of fulfillment
itself. Genuine independence can be realized through competence, through finding
a career, through the use of education. Remember that for many decades the
education of women was not supposed to be
useful.

单选题Psychologists originally used the term short-term memory to refer to the ability to hold information in mind over a brief period of time. As conceptions of short-terra memory expanded to include more than just the brief storage of information, psychologists created new terminology. The term working memory is now commonly used to refer to a broader system that both stores information briefly and allows manipulation and use of the stored information. Psychologists often study working memory storage by examining how well people remember a list of items. In a typical experiment, people are presented with a series of words, one every few seconds. Then they are instructed to recall as many of the words as they can, in any order. Most people remember the words at the beginning and end of the series better than those in the middle. This phenomenon is called the serial position effect because the chance of recalling an item is related to its position in the series. In this experiment, recall was tested either immediately after presentation of the list items or after 30 seconds. Subjects in both conditions demonstrated what is known as the primacy effect, which is better recall of the first few list items. Psychologists believe this effect occurs because people tend to process the first few items more than later items. Subjects in the immediate-recall condition also showed the recency effect, or better recall of the last items on the list. Working memory has a basic limitation: It can hold only a limited amount of information at one time. Early research on short-term storage of information focused on memory span--bow many items people can correctly recall in order. More recent studies have attempted to separate true storage capacity from processing capacity by using tests more complex than memory span. These studies have estimated a somewhat lower short-term storage capacity than did the earlier experiments. People can overcome such storage limitations by grouping information into chunks, or meaningful units. Working memory is critical for mental work, or thinking. The ability to carry out these kinds of calculations depends on working memory capacity, which varies individually. Studies have also shown that working memory changes with age. As children grow older, their working memory capacity increases. Working memory declines in old age and in some types of brain diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. Working memory capacity is correlated with intelligence (as measured by intelligence tests). This correlation has led some psychologists to argue that working memory abilities are essentially those that underlie general intelligence. In addition, research suggests that there are different types of working memory. For example, the ability to hold visual images in mind seems independent from the ability to retain verbal information.
