A new young teacher has just begun her work. In the first day of school, after she read the list (名单) of students in her class, she thought, the day started really exciting. Because after each student's name was a number, such as 138、140、154 and so on." Look at these IQs (智商)." she thought to herself. "These students all have high IQs, so the school must have given me the best class of all!" As a result, the excited teacher worked much harder with this class than other teachers in the grade. She spent a lot of time and tried many new teaching ways that she thought would be helpful for the students and hold their interest. She was successful and it worked! The class did much better than any other classes which were taught by other teachers in the usual way in this school. The school praised(表扬) this class and this new teacher greatly for their success. Only later did she find out that the numbers after each student's name were just their locker(存物柜) numbers.

In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera (照相机). He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo. The next important date in the history of photography (摄影术) was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing. This kind of photo was called a Daguerretype. Soon, other people began to use Daguerre's way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all around the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains. In about 1840, the process was improved. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry lots of films and processing equipment. But this did not stop the photographers, especially in the United States. After the 1840s, daguerreotype artists were popular in most cities.
