It' s a lovely house, facing south with a big garden. As you look at the house from outside, the front door is over on the left. It opens into a big room on the first floor. It is really a beautiful room, with an old fireplace(壁炉)in the east wall. This is where we have our meals. There are doors on either side of the fireplace, leading to(通往)two smaller rooms. One is my study and the other is a bedroom—nice and bright. At the back of the big room, a flight of stairs(楼梯)leads up to the second floor. The stairs lead into the living-room—it' s a nice, big room. It has windows in the north, south and west walls. This is where we spend most of our time when we' re not working. There is a big bedroom on this floor. It used to be two rooms, but we had a wall taken down. Between the living-room and the bedroom is a storeroom. We want to turn it into a small bedroom for guests, but we haven' t found the time to do it.

Americans use the word"friend" in their own way. Americans have school friends, work friends, and sports friends. These friendships grow out of the same interests. When people no longer do the same thing out of the same interests, the friendship may end. In some cultures(文化)friendship between two people may last for a lifetime. In these cultures friendships develop slowly, since they are built to last. American society(社会)is one of fast change. Studies show that one out of five American families move every year. American friendships develop quickly, and they may change just as quickly. Americans may seem very friendly and they often talk easily with strangers. They give each other information about their families, hobbies and work. They may smile warmly and say "Have a nice day" or "See you later". Students may say to each other, "Let' s get together sometime. " But American friendliness does not always mean true friendship. Outsiders may think that Americans are too changeable, but learning what Americans think of friendship can help non-Americans keep away from misunderstandings(误解). It can also help them make friends the American way.
When you want to go shopping and decide how much money you can spend for new clothes, think about the kind of clothes you really need. Then look for those clothes on sale. There are labels(标签) inside all new clothes. The labels tell you how to take care of your clothes. The label for a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water. A sweater label may tell you to wash by washing in cold water. The label on a coat may say "dry clean only". Washing may ruin(毁坏) this coat. If you do as the directions say on the label, you can keep your clothes looking their best. Many clothes today must be dry-cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive. When buying new clothes, check to see if they will need to be dry-cleaned. You will save money if you buy clothes that can be washed. You can save money if you buy clothes that are well-made. Well-made clothes last longer. They look good even after they have been washed many times. Clothes that cost more money are not always better made. They do not always fit better. Sometimes less expensive clothes look and fit better than more expensive ones.

When you are invited to attend a party in the west, the first important thing you need to know is arriving late. It is a great embarrassment(尴尬) to arrive at a party early or even on time. Therefore, unless you are the host of the party, you never want to be the first person present at a party. Why? Because people are afraid that others may think that they have no life or nothing better to do than waiting for a party to start. Many people try to show an image (形象) of business which, whether true or not, has something to do with success. So by arriving late, you are saying, "I live a full life and it's really exciting." Therefore, an 8 o'clock party usually doesn't really start until maybe 9 o'clock as everyone wants to be thought of as a busy and important person with lots of things to do. In other words, a party is one of those rare occasions(极少数场合) where your punctuality can actually hurt you. It's quite a strange thing, isn't it? Anyhow, remember, be late!
