Henry said, "Thank you very much. Is he expensive?" "Well,

Elizabeth Taylor was born in England in
1932. She was a very beautiful child, with black hair and bluish-purple
eyes. In 1939, she and her family moved to America, where film
makers soon noticed her beauty. She became a child star at the age of nine, and
appeared in the film "Lassie" and "National Velvet". Elizabeth Taylor is one of
the few child film stars who have been quite successful when they grow
up. She has made many well-known films all her life: one of them
is "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in 1958. Her personal life has not been as successful
as her films. She has got married eight times. She has often
been ill with back problems and has had many operations. In 1981, after she left
her second husband, she was in such low spirits that she turned to food, drink
and drugs (毒品) for comfort. For the first time in her life, her beauty left her
and she put on a lot of weight. However, in 1983, she went to
stay in a hospital, and there she worked hard to give up her addiction
(瘾). Today she is a grandmother and she has her film star looks
again.

Last spring, sixteen-year-old Donald
Gomes had a problem. Like a lot of children, Donald was fond (喜欢的) of sports.
But he didn't want to play basketball or football, He wanted to play volleyball
(排球). But Donald's high school didn't have a boys' volleyball
team (队,组). So what did he do?. He tried to join the girls' team. And he made
it. With that Donald thought (认为, 考虑) his problem was over. But
a bigger problem was just beginning (开始,起源). The school didn't agree that Donald
should play on the girls' team. "If we let Donald on the team," the school
said," other boys will want to join. Pretty (相当) soon, there won't be any girls
on the team. And that would not be fair (定期集市,公平的) to the girls." They took
Donald off the team. So, Donald took his case to a judge (判断).

Sports are enjoyed by everyone. The
most interesting sports are team sports. They are often played outside with a
ball and watched by thousands of people. Most people are interested in watching
the teams they like. They love to see them win. But even if they lose, they will
still be liked. Some interesting sports, like football and
basketball, are practiced and played in all kinds of weather. When they are
played in the snow or in the rain, players must be more careful because mistakes
are easily made. Some games are won or lost just because the weather is
bad. Tickets to important games are not easily bought. Important
games are often watched by many people at home on TV, which saves them the
trouble from the cold rain or snow. When important games are
played during the week, they are often listened to at work on the radio. People
who listen to them often do not finish their work, but they don't care. They
only care about their team. Winning is the only thing they care
about.

Dina Borzekowski made a study of a
group of third-grade students from six American schools. During a school year,
nearly 400 students and their parents were asked to report on whether they had
such things as televisions and computers in the home, as well as how often the
child used them. The children's language ability was tested (测验) twice over the
year. Children who had a television set in the bedroom but did not have a
computer at home scored (得分) the lowest, while students without TV in the
bedroom but with a computer at home scored the highest. Students who had a
television in the bedroom over the school year scored lower than those who had
their TV taken away during the same time. "This study suggests
that taking TV sets out of children's bedrooms, or not putting them there, may
be helpful," said Borzekowski. "While this study does not prove (证明) that
bedroom TV was the reason for the lower test scores, it suggests that children
shouldn't have TV in their bedrooms. It also suggests that a home computer may
help a child's test scores. The best way was having both: no TV in the bedroom
and also a home computer to use. "
