单选题In 1870s rich people began to speak of spending weekends in the country visiting friends. For most people back then, however, the workday was six days long. Car maker Henry Ford was the first person in the United States to start a workweek of 5 days. He did that in 1926. By 1940 it had become common for most Americans to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. For many people Saturday night is the happiest time of the weekend and the week. Anything and everything can happen (发生) on Saturday night. People go dancing; they visit friends and have parties. They drink much alcohol (酒精饮料). They sleep, and watch television. People do the same things on other nights of the week too, but they do them more often on Saturday night. On Saturday night cinemas sell more tickets. It is also the biggest night for places that sell alcoholic drinks. That is one reason why most fights and car accidents (事故) are on Saturday night. Is there anything people do not like about the weekend? A study of 1,000 Americans found that half would gladly have a more day of free time. The only thing wrong with the weekend, they think, is that it does not last longer.

单选题 It used to be that if you wanted to travel, you had to plan
for a long bus or train fide. But the car changed all that. Though at first it
was thought of as too expensive, the car quickly became a necessary thing in
America. Between 1908 and 1926, Ford Motor Company sold more than 15 million
cars. Almost from the beginning, people liked to use their cars
to go on holiday. With so many people taking to the road, the U.S. had to build
more and better roads to support (维持) all that traffic (交通). As an easy way to
see the country, traveling by car brought about the development of roadside
restaurants. People also needed information on interesting places to visit and
how to get there, so road maps and travel guides (指南) were developed.
Having a car meant families could go to places far from where they lived.
If you lived in a warm place, you could go to the mountains to see snow; if you
lived in a cold place, you could drive to the seaside for fun in the sun. Cars
made it possible to do what was not easy for most people before.

One day the oldest mouse said, "All the mice must come to my hole tonight, and we will decide what we can do about the cat."
All the mice came. They thought hard and tried to find a way to save their lives. Many of them spoke, but no one knew what to do. At last young mouse stood up and said, "Why not tie (系) a bell around the cat"s neck? Then when the cat comes near, we"ll hear the bell and run away and hide.
