Dina Borzekowski made a study of a
group of third-grade students from six American schools. During a school year,
nearly 400 students and their parents were asked to report on whether they had
such things as televisions and computers in the home, as well as how often the
child used them. The children's language ability was tested (测验) twice over the
year. Children who had a television set in the bedroom but did not have a
computer at home scored (得分) the lowest, while students without TV in the
bedroom but with a computer at home scored the highest. Students who had a
television in the bedroom over the school year scored lower than those who had
their TV taken away during the same time. "This study suggests
that taking TV sets out of children's bedrooms, or not putting them there, may
be helpful," said Borzekowski. "While this study does not prove (证明) that
bedroom TV was the reason for the lower test scores, it suggests that children
shouldn't have TV in their bedrooms. It also suggests that a home computer may
help a child's test scores. The best way was having both: no TV in the bedroom
and also a home computer to use. "

填空题
The computer is fast, and seldom makes
a mistake, while people are too slow, and full of mistakes sometimes. That is
what people often say about computers. For over a quarter of a century engineers
have been making better and better computers. Now a computer can do a lot of
everyday jobs wonderfully. It is widely used in factories, hospitals, banks and
universities. A computer can report, decide and control in almost every field.
Many computer scientists are now thinking of making the computer "think" like a
man. With the help of a person, a computer can draw pictures, write music, talk
with people, play chess, recognize voices, translate languages, and so on.
Perhaps computers will one day really think and feel. Do you think the people
will be afraid when they find that the computer is too clever to listen to and
serve the people?

How Did Newtown Become a Very Clean
Place?{{/B}} Today Newtown is a very clean place. Many years ago,
however (然面,不管怎样), there are millions of rats in Newtown. They attacked the cats
and dogs. Sometimes a great number of them knocked down a man or a woman walking
home at night. The rats were very large and they harmed many people.
The government (政府, 管理) ordered everybody to kill rats. Most were lazy
(懒惰的), so they did not kill many. Then the government promised to pay some money
for each dead rat. That made people very happy. They killed thousands of rats
every day. A government officer put all the dead rats in a big pile. Sometimes a
man brought hundreds in one day. After two weeks there were not
many rats in the city, but people still brought many rats to the government
officer. The government officer thought (认为,考虑) that people were stealing dead
rats from the pile. He ordered his men to dig a deep hole and put the rats in
it. Soon there were no more rats, and the government did not pay anymore
money.
