单选题Black Americans have served with honor in every American military action, though this fact is often not written in history books. Even though black men begged to be allowed to serve in the Revolution War, they served well. During the Revolution War a black man named Estabrook captured Royal Army"s General Prescott Newport and Peter Salem, a black, killed Major Pitcairn as he was savoring his victory at Bunker Hill.
Though whites had long believed that blacks could neither command nor use firearms, blacks fought bravely. In 1863, William Carney received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his vole in battles.
In World War Ⅰ,40, 00 black soldiers served with this French command Johnson and Needham Robert were the first Americans to win tile Croix de Guerre—France"s top military award.
During World War R over 40, 000 black soldiers served in the army forces. Dorie Miller, a black, was one of the first heroes in this war. At Pearl Harbor during Japanese attack, he shot down four planes. The black fighter pilots of Benjamin Davis, Jr. made themselves known as brave soldiers throughout the war.

单选题Co-operation means working together for the benefit of all. Without co-operation modern society could not exist. Co-operation has been at its best among the farmers in the dry areas of certain parts of Australia and Africa. The fields have been irrigated in these areas. Crops cannot be grown without water. For this purpose, canals and reservoirs have been built. The canals have been cut through the fields of not only one farmer. Those who live higher up the valley than the others have permitted canals to be built through their land in order to carry water to the fields of farmers lower down. When there is a long period without rain, all share the water. Instead of taking all the water for them selves, the farmers in the higher land leave enough water for their neighbours down the valley. Farming in the dry areas has been made possible by such co-operation. By co-operation farmers have learned to make even the desert produce crops.

单选题 Studies over the past decade at the University of Utah show
that hands-free cellphones are just as harmful to drivers as hand-held ones
because it is the conversation, not the phone, that is distracting(分散) their
attention. "Even though your eyes are looking fight at something, when you are
on the cellphone, you are not as likely to see it," says Professor David
Strayer. "Ninety-nine percent of the time, it's not that critical(危急的), but that
1% could be the time a child runs into the street," he adds.
Dr. Strayer's studies have also found that talking on a cellphone is far more
distracting than talking with a passenger. Listening to the radio, to music or
to a book on tape also isn't as distracting, because it doesn't require the same
level of interaction as a conversation. But even drivers may miss some details
of a book on tape if their attention is focused on driving tasks. Some people
can train themselves to pay extra attention to things that are important—like
police officers learn to search faces in crowds. And the Utah
researchers have found a rare group of "super-taskers"—about 2.5% of the
population—who seem able to attend to more than one thing with ease.
Many more people think they can effectively do several things at the same
time, but they are really turning their attention rapidly between two things and
not getting the full effect of either. Clearly, it is easier to put some tasks
together than others. "Not all distractions are the same," says Dr. Strayer.
Things like cleaning and working out can be done automatically(自动地) while the
mind is focused elsewhere. But doing homework and texting at the same time isn't
possible. Even talking and watching TV is difficult. "Just try talking with your
wife while watching football. It's impossible," jokes Dr. Strayer.

The air surrounding us is important to
everyone. Without air, we could not exist. Everyone understands that. But air is
necessary in many other ways — ways that are not always so obvious or widely
known. If we did not have air, there would be no sound. Sound
travels through air. Where there is no air, there is no sound. Without air there
would be no fire. There would be no automobiles, since motors need air in order
to operate. Without air, there would be no wind or clouds. The
night time would be very cold and the days very hot. We would be forced to seek
shelter from the sun, as there would be no atmosphere to protect us from the
sun's deadly rays. In this huge ocean of air surrounding the
earth, there is more energy than in all the coal, oil and gas we have on the
earth. Electrical energy is collected in the atmosphere as water is collected
and stored in a dam (大坝). The existence of electricity in the air has been known
for centuries. Men have gazed in wonder at the bright patterns of lightening in
storm clouds. But thorough (彻底的,深入的) study of electricity in the air was not
possible until the development of radio.
