单选题{{B}}C{{/B}} "Happy New Year!" Everyone will greet each other with these words as they meet each other over the next couple of weeks. But it wasn't always January 1 that marked the new year. At least 4,000 years ago the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians marked the changing of the year. In Egypt, the year started when the Nile River flooded, enriching (使肥沃) farmers' fields with silt (淤泥). This happened at the end of September. The Babylonians held a festival in the spring, on March 23, to kick off the next fanning cycle. The Babylonian celebration lasted for 11 days. The date January 1 was picked by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as the change of the year when he established his own calendar in 46 BC. The month of January' was named after the Roman god, Janus. He is pictured with two heads. One head looks forward and the other back. They represent a break between the old and new. The new calendar was in time with the sun and it has been used until the present day. Around the world, different cultures have their own traditions for welcoming the new year. The Japanese hang straw rope across the front of their houses to keep out evil spirits and bring happiness and good luck. They also have a good laugh as the year begins to get things started on a lucky note.

单选题August 13th, 2008 Dear Sirs, I am very happy to apply for the position of secretary, which you advertised in China Daily of August 11, 2008. I have been working as a secretary at a college office. Because I am the only secretary in the office, it is necessary for me to work quickly and efficiently and to be flexible in my daily work. Professors value my work and my ability to meet their needs. Although I am happy now, I feel that my promotion (晋升) is limited here, and I would like to have a more challenging job. Therefore, I enrolled (参加) in a program to expand my knowledge of international business affairs. Now, both my English and Chinese have been improved and I am ready to begin working as a bilingual secretary in an international company like yours, and I believe I can be a great help to your firm. The enclosed resume gives further details of my qualifications, and I would appreciate it if you could give me an opportunity to have an interview. I am looking forward to receiving your call at 62428866 or please use the enclosed pre-paid postcard to send me your reply. Thank you very much for your consideration. Faithfully ours, Mary Lee

单选题E Milk was one of the main human foods long before history was written. It will probably remain one as long as there are animals that give milk. The old word "milk" came from Sanskrit, one of the oldest languages known to man. A very old picture of milking has been found. It was drawn five thousand years ago. In the years long ago, people got their milk from their own animals. But in modem times new inventions made the milk industry a big business. In 1851 Gall Borden found a way to take some of the water out from milk. This made milk keep longer. Four years later, Louis Pasteur introduced a way to kill the bacteria in milk. Next, a special milk bottle was made. This was followed by the invention of machines that could fill bottles with milk. These discoveries had a great effect on the milk industry. They meant that milk could be stored longer. Some people believe that milk drinking will become less popular than it has been. But remember how long milk has been an important food and think of the many ways in which it is useful. It seems safe to say that milk industry will always be important.
