单选题{{B}}C{{/B}} Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value. The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer. As a result, Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps. Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius' Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was told to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally inscribed (记下) the words "Post Office" instead of "Post Paid" on the several hundred stamps that he printed. Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left: fourteen One Penny Orange— Reds and twelve Two Penny Blues. Because of the Two Penny Blue's rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $16,800 for it.

单选题 The measure of man's real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out. —Thomas Macaulay Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs. Nanette O'Neill gave an arithmetic{{U}} {{U}} 1 {{/U}} {{/U}}to our class. When the papers were{{U}} {{U}} 2 {{/U}} {{/U}}she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the{{U}} {{U}} 3 {{/U}} {{/U}}mistakes throughout the test. There is nothing really new about{{U}} {{U}} 4 {{/U}} {{/U}}in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs. O'Neill{{U}} {{U}} 5 {{/U}} {{/U}}even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to{{U}} {{U}} 6 {{/U}} {{/U}}after class. I was one of the twelve. Mrs O'Neill asked{{U}} {{U}} 7 {{/U}} {{/U}}questions, and she didn't{{U}} {{U}} 8 {{/U}} {{/U}}us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the{{U}} {{U}} 9 {{/U}} {{/U}}words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to{{U}} {{U}} 10 {{/U}} {{/U}}these words into our exercise-books one hundred times. I don't{{U}} {{U}} 11 {{/U}} {{/U}}about the other eleven boys. Speaking for{{U}} {{U}} 12 {{/U}} {{/U}}I can say. it was the most important single{{U}} {{U}} 13 {{/U}} {{/U}}of my life. Thirty years after being{{U}} {{U}} 14 {{/U}} {{/U}}to Macaulay's words, they{{U}} {{U}} 15 {{/U}} {{/U}}seem to me the best yardstick(准绳), because they give us a{{U}} {{U}} 16 {{/U}} {{/U}}to measure ourselves rather than others. {{U}} {{U}} 17 {{/U}} {{/U}}of us are asked to make{{U}} {{U}} 18 {{/U}} {{/U}}decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called{{U}} {{U}} 19 {{/U}} {{/U}}daily to make a great many personal decisions.{{U}} {{U}} 20 {{/U}} {{/U}}the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket{{U}} {{U}} 21 {{/U}} {{/U}}turned over to the policeman? Should the{{U}} {{U}} 22 {{/U}} {{/U}}change received at the store be forgotten or{{U}} {{U}} 23 {{/U}} {{/U}}? Nobody will know except{{U}} {{U}} 24 {{/U}} {{/U}}. But you have to live with yourself, and it is always{{U}} {{U}} 25 {{/U}} {{/U}}to live with someone you respect.

单选题Young people like to form groups. If you are not up to their standard, you will not be accepted into their group. And if you are an inner- going person and you are very shy, you may not dare to talk to others. Then what should you do? You should take the first step. Don't wait until others come to talk to you. You should go to them and say "Hello" first. Then you will start a conversation. If you share some interests, you will become very close friends. You should also keep an eye of personal interest of others. Being interested in others will show that you care about them. A boy named David, for example, is very successful in making friends. He says, "I have a real love for people and I take an active interest in others." He adds, "One of the biggest things is to know that person's name. Others are impressed that you care enough to remember their names. Because of this they may share some experience or problem with you. And the friendship starts to build." True, taking an interest in others is the key to starting friendship. When you want to make friends with someone, you should not pretend to be someone else. If you pretend to be better than you really are, you will lose him or her when they find out.

单选题John was a clever boy, but his parents were poor, and he had to work in his spare time and during his holidays to pay for his education. Despite this, he managed to go to university, but it was so expensive to study there that during the holiday, he found it necessary to do two jobs at the same time in order to earn enough money to pay for his studies. One summer he managed to get a job in a butcher's shop during the day time ,and another in a hospital at night. In the shop he learned to cut meat up quite nicely, so the butcher often left him to do all the serving while he went into a room behind the shop to do the accounts. In the hospital, on the other hand, he was, of course, allowed to do only the simplest jobs, like lifting people and carrying them from one part of the hospital to another. Both at the butcher' s and at the hospital, John had to wear white clothes. One evening at the hospital, John had to carry a woman from her bed to the place where she was to have an operation. The woman was already feeling frightened at the thought of the operation before he came to get her, but when she saw John, that frightened her. "No! No!" She cried, "Not my butcher! I won't be operated on by my butcher!" and fainted away.
