A new kind of radar has been developed
for spaceship travelers. A working laboratory model of a new system of radar
that makes use of a beam of light is said to be ten thousand times more accurate
than the best comparable system of radar that uses microwaves.
The model has shown that this radar system, known as laser-dopple radar,
can measure with absolute precision speeds varying from spaceship orbital
injection(进入)velocities(速度)of five miles per second down to virtual stops-speeds
of less than one-thousandth of an inch per second. According to the scientists
who are developing this system, such fine measures of velocity are of prime
importance in space missions. In a rendezvous(对接) between two spaceships, or in
a landing approach by a vehicle onto an orbiting space station, a bump could rip
open a ship's skin, or a nudge could knock the station out of its
orbit. The light-beam radar, which operates at a frequency of
trillions of cycles(百万兆) per second, could easily detect and measure the
movement of a vehicle edging up to a satellite space station. A control system
using so precise a signal as this would allow a huge vehicle to dock at a space
station as lightly as a feather.
单选题Scientists say they now have proof to support the old-fashioned advice that it's best to sleep on a problem. They say sleep strengthens the memory and helps the brain organize the masses of information we receive each day. Lead researcher Bob Stickgold at the Harvard Medical School said, "Sleep helps us draw rules from our experiences. It's like knowing the difference between dogs and cats, even if it's hard to explain. " The US research team studied how well students remembered connections between words and symbols (象征), reports New Scientist. They compared how the students performed if they had had a sleep between seeing the words and having the test, and if they had not slept. They found that people were better able to remember lists of related words after a night's sleep than after the same time spent awake during the day. They also found it easier to remember themes (主题) that the words had in common. But they forgot around one in four more themes if they had been awake. Prof. John Groeger, of Surrey University's Sleep Research Centre, said, "People have been trying for years to find out what the purpose of sleep is, as we know that only certain parts of it have a restorative (有助恢复的) value. " "We form and store huge numbers of experiences in the head every day, and sleep seems to be the way the brain deals with it all./

单选题In January, 2003, the eastern two-thirds of the United States was at the mercy of a bitterly cold air mass that has endangered Florida's citrus trees, choked northern harbors with ice and left bewildered residents of North Carolina's Outer Banks digging out of up to a foot of snow. The ice chill deepened as temperatures fell to the single digits in most of the South, with an unfamiliar dip below the freezing mark as far south as parts of interior South Florida. Temperatures in Florida plunged, with West Palm Beach dropping to a record low of 2 degrees. "We couldn't believe how cold it was," said Martin King, who arrived this week in Orlando from England. "We brought shorts, T-shirt, and I had to go out and buy another coat. " The temperature plunge posed a threat to Florida's US $ 9.1 billion-a-year citrus crop, more of which is still on the trees. Growers were hurrying to harvest as much of the fruit as possible before it was damaged by cold. "Time is of the essence in getting fruit to the plant," said Tom Rogers, a citrus grower who expected to see damage to oranges and grapefruit at that time. In Florida, Governor Jeb Bush signed an emergency order to eliminate the weight limit on trucks so citrus growers could get as much fruit to market as possible. Casey Pace, a spokeswoman for Florida Citrus Mutual, said growers had sprayed trees with sprinklers, which created a layer of ice and helped maintain a temperature near freezing. Citrus trees are considered in danger of damage if the temperature drops below minus 2 degrees Celsius for four hours or more. Snow ranging from a dusting to up to 30 centimeters blanketed the Carolinas, Tennessee and parts of Virginia.

One hundred new bookstalls that will
sell newspapers as well as books have been making their debut on city streets
since Saturday morning. The newsstands are part of the city's
efforts to improve the appearance of streets and neighborhoods. The newsstands'
design, featuring large glass window, will help the customers to see what is on
sale at a glance. An electrical screen on the newsstands will
announce immediately the arrival of the latest papers. There will be 1 000
newsstands by the end of the year. The newly formed company will manage the
stalls. According to sources from the company, over 80 percent of the people
hired to operate the stands will be recruited from laid-off workers. This means
file project will help ease the city's unemployment pressure, sources
said. All recruited will undergo a training program and be
dressed in green uniform. Municipal Vicepart Secretary Gong Xueping said the
installation of the 100 stands was just the first step towards the objective of
setting up 1 000 stands in the city by the end of the year. He
said the creation of the stalls would be of particular significance to the
enhancement of the city's spiritual civilization. He also made some suggestions
regarding the location, design and construction of the new stands and the
renovation of the existing newsstands.
