Why can you look at an object in the real world and see it as a three-dimensional (三维的) object, but if you see that same object on a television, it looks flat? What' s going on, and how does 3-D technology get around the problem? It all has to do with the way we see objects. When the light that travels to an object is sent back to our eyes, our brains understand the light and make up a picture in our minds. When an object is far away, the light travelling to one eye is parallel(平行的) with the light travelling to the other eye. But as an object gets closer, the lines are no longer parallel—they move toward the same point where they join. You can see this effect if you try to look at something right in front of your nose—you'll get a lovely cross-eyed expression. When you look at an object, your brain measures the effort your eyes make to focus on the object as well as how much they had to gather the light to the same point. Together, this information allows you to guess how far away the object is. If your eyes had to gather the light with quite a big effort, then it stands to reason that the object is close to you. The secret to 3-D television and films is that by wearing a special pair of glasses and by showing each eye the same picture in two different places, you can make your brain think that the flat picture you' re seeing has depth. But this actually doesn't match up the way we see real objects. While your eyes may gather two images(形象) that seem to be one object right in front of you, they' re actually focusing on pictures further away. This is why your eyes get very tired if you try to watch too many 3-D movies in one sitting.

In my time here at Carleton College, I've picked up many valuable pieces of advice from others, and have come up with a few of my own. With my time here drawing to a close, here' s two of the most valuable ones I wish I had known as a freshman (一年级学生). First, don't expect to join all the clubs here. Taking part in them is good, but the workload here is too heavy and time with your friends is too limited to devote yourself to a million and one clubs. Find a couple of things you dig, and you' 11 find yourself much happier than if you had spent your time joining every single organization that sounds somewhat interesting to you. Also, don't always think of your free time in terms of organizations you can join. Getting really good at something—an instrument(乐器), creative writing, cooking—is just as good a use of your free time, even if it might never be taken into any resume (简历). Second, when Socrates said "Know Yourself", he was talking about your sleep schedule. You can fool yourself into thinking that an 8: 30 a. m. class in the winter is the perfect way to get your day started, but you soon may find yourself emailing the teacher with excuses for being absent. Scheduling all your classes afternoon is sometimes equally deadly; you might just end up going out the night before knowing you can safely sleep in. I've found that the way to take classes is to load them in the middle of the day, nothing before 9: 50 a. m., nothing after 3:10 p. m.

But there was an accident yesterday on Broad Street. Mark: What happened?Linda: A car knocked down the roadside barrier and then run into a tree. Mark: How come? Was the driver drunk? Linda: No, he wasn't. Mark: Was he speeding then? Linda: No. Mark: That' s curious. Then why did he lose control of the car? Linda: Because the truck right in front, which was loaded with large boxes, suddenly dropped a box onto the ground. Trying to avoid hitting the box, the driver turned left sharply, which was lucky, because there are five or six people on the side walk on the right. Mark: Oh! That was scary. Was the driver hurt? Linda: Yes, but not badly. Witnesses called the police and the driver was brought to the hospital. He suffered from some bruises but otherwise, he's Okay. Mark: What a lucky escape! Linda: Yes, it was really dangerous. And the police are still trying to find out who should be responsible for the accident. Mark: I just hope it won' t happen again.

Urbanization Until relatively recently, the vast majority of human beings lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5,500 years ago.【B1】______ In fact, nearly everyone lived on farms or in tiny rural (乡村的) villages. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history—a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living. Britain was only the beginning.【B2】______ The process of urbanization—the migration (迁徙) of people from the countryside to the city—was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live. In 1990, fewer than 40% of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82% of Americans live in cities. Only about 2% live on farms.【B3】______ Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies, it took about ninety-five people on farms to feed five people in cities.【B4】______ Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite (精英) and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city. Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country.【B5】______ Today, instead of needing ninety-five farmers to feed five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred non-farmers.[A] That kept cities very small.[B] The rest live in small towns.[C] The effects of urban living on people should be considered.[D] Soon many other industrial nations became urban societies.[E] But even 200 years ago, only a few people could live in cities.[F] Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive.[G] Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings.
