单选题One day a very wealthy American, Hiram Boost, came to Macasso—you may have heard of Boost, he's in films-and he said he had bought, secretly, a valuable 16th century "old master". He said, "I know that the English government won't let me take it out of England, but I have a plan to get round that. I want you to paint a picture—it doesn't matter what it is-on top of the 'old master'." Hiram then explained that he could quite easily get Macasso's picture removed from the canvas when he got to New York, without damaging the painting underneath. Well, Macasso painted a picture of a London gas-works on it, and old Boost got the canvas to New York all right and sent it to the firm he knew to have Maeasso's painting removed. About a week later he got a telegram from the firm. It said: "We have removed the picture of London gas-works, also 'old master', and are now down to a portrait of Queen Victoria. When do you want us to stop?\

单选题People today expect to be examined when they enter a doctor"s office. At least they expect their blood pressure and temperature to be measured. However, as recently as two hundred years ago, a doctor"s treatment depended on talking with patients. In general, the communication between doctors and their patients was the most important part of medical methods. The modern age of medicine began with the stethoscope, an instrument for listening to patients" heartbeat and breathing. Before that, a doctor did not touch a patient. In fact, there was no such thing as a medical examination. The stethoscope—with all other medical instruments—has a serious effect on the practice of medicine. Doctors become better at finding the medical problems. More lives are saved. At the same time, doctors give less importance to the communication between patients and doctors. Some doctors actually stop talking to their patients. It is easy to understand why some sick people thought themselves as broken machines.

单选题They first arrived on British ships almost 200 years ago, with the aim of cutting back a rapid growth of rat population. Then the cats themselves became the problem. After dealing with the rats, they turned to birds—and now hundreds of them have been killed in a move to protect rare birds. Even cat lovers have been persuaded to back the move, after being told that there was no other choice. When British sailors took control of Ascension Island in 1815, they found nobody living on it but that it was overrun with rats which had escaped from sinking ships. They introduced cats to kill the rats—and were soon overrun by cats. By 1820 they were sending back to England for dogs to kill the cats, but they didn"t work. Ever since, the wild cat population has been attacking the birds. Man introduced these cats, and it has disturbed the balance. Ascension Island is a most important seabird gathering place. We have to undo man"s mistake in bringing cats here. Action has been taken to kill off wild cats for the protection of birds. Only cats raised as pets are allowed. Since they are micro-chipped, if they get caught they can be sent back to their owner. The action can be considered rather successful. The cat population is down to the last few—they are the most difficult ones to catch.

单选题{{B}}Text 3{{/B}} The Internet is a way of life for US college students. A recent survey by Harris Interactive and 360 youth found that 93 per cent of American college students visit the Internet, and this market is expected to grow from 15.2 million in 2003 to 16.4 million in 2007. That is slow but it could be the result of the already high number of Internet college users. About 88 per cent of American college students own a computer, and more than half have broadband (宽带) connections. Furthermore, 67 per cent own cell phones and 36 per cent use their mobile devices to visit the Internet. Study findings show that 42 per cent go online mainly to communicate socially, and 72 percent of college students check emails at least once a day, with 66 per cent using at least two email addresses. The most popular online social activity is sending messages to friends or family, with 37 percent of college students saying they do so. The study also looked beyond the Internet surfing habits and into the buying habits of this group, and found them responsible for more than $ 210 billion in sales last year alone. College students have learned how to spend their money, with 93 per cent saying low prices are important when shopping. The study also shows that 65 per cent make loan (贷款) payments; 41 per cent of freshmen have a credit card; and 79 per cent of seniors have a credit card. A great number of charges on those credit cards are likely to be for entertainment and leisure expenses.

单选题Raccoon is an American Indian name for a small, tree-climbing animal, Raccoons are mainly active at night. They are restless, known for their "bandit' s masks (强盗面孔)" ,ringed tails, and curiosity. A regular visitor to lakes and rivers, the raccoon lives on fish as well as nuts, fruits, and eggs. One ihteresting thing about this animal is that he always washes his meal. He does so be- cause of the habit of feeling his food for texture (软硬) and size, for the skillful and quick animals sharp of touch heightens when his fingers are wet. In northern areas, the raccoon's activity drops off considerably during the winter, but he does not actually totally rest. The raccoon family is usually made up of a mother and her young. After mom bears babies, she becomes teacher, protector, and provider of food. At first she nurses her babies; later she goes in search of solid food to bring back to her young. Raccoons are born in the spring and are fed with mother's milk until late summer. Mother shows her children how to climb a tree quickly to escape enemies, how to swim, and how to catch mice and other small animals. Raccoons are famous for their nighttime search in trash cans (垃圾桶). They can find a home almost anywhere.
