单选题Which would you rather be, a mathematician or an author? Perhaps you will never be faced with this kind of choice. Lewis Carroll was both a mathematician and an author. He was a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University. But he is better known as the author of two of the most famous children's books that have ever been written (Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The author's real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, but he preferred to use the penname "Lewis Carroll" when he wrote, and this is the name we remember him by. Alice in Wonderland was published in 1865, when the author was 33 years old; it was followed by Through the Looking Glass in 1871. Both books were written for a real girl called Alice and they have been read by millions of children since they were first published. These stories are about a dream world in which Alice meets strange creatures and has interesting adventures. I'm sure you know this already, but if you don't you'd better read the stories yourselves.

单选题"How far is it to the next village?" the American asks a man sitting by the side of the road. In some countries, because the man realizes that the traveler is tired and eager to get to his destination, he will politely say "Just down the road." He thinks this is more encouraging, gentler, and therefore the wanted answer. So the American drives through the night, getting more and more angry, feeling "tricked". He thinks the man deliberately cheated him, for obviously he must have known the distance quite well. Had conditions been reversed, the American would have felt he was "cheating" the driver if he had said the next town was close when he knew it was really 15 miles further on. Though, he, too, would be sympathetic to the weary driver, he would say "You have a good way to go yet: it is at least 15 miles." The driver might be disappointed, but he would know what to expect. Whether to be accurate or polite leads to many misunderstandings between people of different cultures. If you are aware of the situation in advance, it is sometimes easier to recognize the problem.

单选题{{B}}D{{/B}} I found myself facing a dry-cleaning store which had once been one of the best restaurants in New York. On Sundays the old man would take my mother and me for dinner. There had been a balcony (走廊) where a baker (面包师) in a tall white hat baked fresh bread, and been whenever a customer entered, the baker would look down and put in a fresh batch (一炉). I could see the manager who always sat down with us while we ate. He had some disease, I suppose, because the right side of his face was swollen (肿的) out like a balloon, but he always wore a hard wing collar and a white tie, and never seemed sick. A Negro with a moustache was looking through the store window at me. For a moment I was anxious to go and tell him what l remembered. I did not go into the store, nor even toward our house, I went downtown instead and sat in my room, trying to read.

单选题 The American type of football was developed in the 19a century from soccer and rugby football. The football playing field of today is rectangular in shape and measures i00 yards long and 53.5 yards wide. White lines are painted on the playing field to mark off the distances to the end zone. The game is divided into four quarters, each fifteen minutes long. The first two quarters are known as the first half. There is a rest period between the two halves which usually lasts about fifteen minutes. Each team has eleven players. Each team has offensive players (play when the team has possession of the ball) and defensive players (play when the other team has possession of the ball). Players are required to wear protective equipment to help keep the body safe during the game. Helmets are worn to protect the head and face area. Pads are worn to protect the shoulders, arms, and legs. Protective equipment must be worn because of the body contact players have during the game. Officials supervise the game and are considered to be very important to the game of football. They carry whistles and flags and make certain that the rules of the game are followed during the game. The football is made of leather and is brown in color. It is shaped much like an oval and has white rings near each end of the football. These rings help the players see the ball when it is thrown or when someone is running with it. The eight stitches on the top of the football help players to grip or hold the ball when throwing or passing. The most famous football game of the year is the Super Bowl that is played in January or February. It is televised around the world and is watched by millions of people each year.

单选题There are thousands of products of all colors and shapes in a supermarket, making you believe that they are worth a try. How? Packaging(包装) is the silent but persuading salesman. There on the shelves, each bottle, can, box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer(消费者), so that is buying not only a product but also his belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the "quality" of the product and on how well it sells, because" Consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products, "as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers" feeling for packaging, noticed. Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eye movement have shown that colors draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word "green" today can keep food prices going up. Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because these shapes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart. That"s why the round yellow M signs of McDonald"s are inviting to both young and old. This new consumer response (反应)to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people buy to satisfy both body and soul.

单选题{{B}}E{{/B}} More than 6000 children were expelled (开除) from US schools last year for bringing guns and bombs to school, the US Department of Education said on May 8. The department gave a report to the expulsions (开除) as saying handguns accounted for 58 percent of the 6093 expulsions in 1996—1997, against 7 percent for rifles (步枪) or shotguns and 35 percent for other types of firearms. "The report is a clear sign that our nation's public schools are cracking down (严惩) on students who bring guns to school," Education Secretary Richard Riley said in a statement. "We need to be tough-minded about keeping guns out of our schools and do everything to keep our children safe." In March 1997, an 11 years old boy and 13 years old boy using handguns and rifles shot dead four children and a teacher at a school in Jonesboro, Arkansas. In October, two were killed and seven wounded in a shooting at a Mississippi school. Two months later, a 14 years old boy killed three high school students and wounded five in Dasucah, Kentucky. Most of the expulsions, 56 percent, were from high school, which have students from about age 13. Thirty-four percent were from junior high school and 9 percent were from elementary schools, the report said.
