单选题Trees have a spectacular survival record. Over a period of more than 400 million years, they have evolved as the tallest, most massive, and longest-lived organisms ever to inhabit the Earth. Yet trees lack a means of defense that almost every animal has: trees cannot move away from destructive forces. Because they cannot move, all types of living and nonliving enemies—fire, storms, microorganisms, insects, other animals and, later, humans—have wounded them throughout their history. Trees have survived, because their evolution has made them into highly compartmented organisms. In that respect trees are radically different from animals. Fundamentally, animals heal: they preserve their life by making billions of repairs, installing new cells or rejuvenated cells in the positions of old ones. Trees cannot heal: they make no repairs. Instead, they defend themselves from the consequences of injury and infection by walling off the damage. At the same time they put new cells in new positions; in effect, they grow a new tree over the old one every year. The most obvious results of the process are growth rings, which are visible on the cross section of a trunk, a root, to a branch.

"It was as though someone was playing a cruel joke on us," she told The Times. "He is the most romantic(浪漫的)person I have ever known. I think our problem is that we are both quite impulsive(易冲动的)people. We are always trying to surprise each other. " Johnstone, a 27-year-old construction worker, had taken a year off to travel round Australia. But he was missing Dolby, a 26-year-old secretary, so much that he got a job on a Sydney building site and started saving for a surprise. He then flew home to Britain and went to her apartment armed with an engagement(订婚) ring and flowers. "I really missed Amy and I'd been thinking about her all the time. I thought she was {{U}}winding me up{{/U}} when she phoned me from Australia. " he said. Johnstone then asked Dolby to marry him on the phone. "I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but I accepted. 单选题Miss Green was going to give a lesson on Monday afternoon. But on Sunday night she was told that she had to go to an important meeting the next day at exactly the same time. "No one can be in two places at the same time. What shall I do?" she thought. But soon, she had an idea. At five to three on Monday afternoon Miss Green went to the classroom. There were about twenty students waiting for her. "I'm sorry," she told them. "I won't be able to give my lesson today." The students looked surprised. Miss Creen went on, "I have an important meeting. But though I can't be with you, my voice can." Then she put a small tape recorder (磁带录音机) on the desk. "You see, I've recorded (录音) my lesson and you can listen to it without me." Thinking that she did the right thing, Miss Green turned on the recorder and left. The meeting finished a little early. Miss Green decided to go back to her students. She stood outside the classroom, listening to her voice. Then very quickly, she opened the door. To her surprise, the room was empty. As she looked around, she saw a lot of small recorders all "listening" to her lesson. "Well," she thought, "if I can be in two places at the same time, why can't they?/
