单选题There are many stereotypes (定型) about the character of people in various parts of the USA. In the Northeast and Midwest, people are said to be closed and private (秘密的). In the South and West, however, they are often thought of as being more hospitable (好客). Ask someone from St. Nouis where the nearest sandwich shop is, and he or she will politely give you directions. A New Yorker might eye you at first and after deciding it is safe to talk to you, might give you a rather un- expected explanation. A person from Georgia might be very king about directing you and even suggest some different places to eat. A Texan just might take you to the place and treat you to lunch.American stereotypes are abundant. New Englanders are often thought of as being friendly and United States are often considered very outgoing. These differences in character can be traced to different factors such as climate, living conditions and historical development. When traveling from place to place, Americans themselves are often surprised at differing degrees of friendliness in the United States.

单选题The making of glass is a very old industry—at least 4,500 years old. Glass has many extraordinary qualities and it is often being used in new ways. One of the most interesting new uses for glass is in telephone communication. Scientists have developed glass fibres as thin as human hair which are designed to carry light signals. When the light reaches the other end, it is first changed into electrical signals which are in turn changed into sound messages. Called lightwave communication, the new system was used successfully in an experiment in Chicago in 1977. During the experiment, two glass fibres were able to carry 672 conversations at the same time. The lightwave cable, containing 144 glass fibres, is able to carry 50,000 conversations at the same time. The lightwave communication system has two important advantages. First, the glass fibre cables are smaller and weigh less than copper cables. Second, they cost less. Perhaps it can be said that telephone communication has entered the age of light.

单选题{{B}}D{{/B}} Everyone needs to sleep. If we don't sleep enough, we often feel tired and irritable (易怒的).It seems there are two purposes of sleep: physical rest and emotional rest. We need to rest our bodies and our minds. Both are important in order for us to be healthy. Each night we alternate (交替) between two kinds of sleep: active sleep and passive sleep. The passive sleep gives our body the rest that is needed, and prepares us for active sleep, in which dreaming occurs. In passive sleep, the body is at rest. The heart slows down. The body processes become very slow. We move very little. And the brain becomes very inactive. If a person continues to sleep, she or he enters a new stage, a more active stage. The body goes thro, gh several changes: the brain temperature rises, the amount of blood in brain increases, the body becomes very still and the brain becomes active. And as the brain becomes more active, the eyes begin to move rapidly, and the person is dreaming. Throughout the night, people alternate between passive and active sleep. During eight hours of sleep, people dream for a total of one and a half hours on the average. Many people say that they don't dream, or that they rarely dream. Doctors have studied the sleep cycles (周期)and have found that everyone dreams—in fact, that everyone needs to dream in order to rest his or her mind.
