单选题Reading to dogs is an unusual way to help children improve their literacy skills(读写能力).With their shining brown eyes, wagging tails, and unconditional love, dogs can provide the nonjudgmental listeners needed for a beginning reader to gain confidence, according to Intermountain Therapy Animals (ITA) in Salt Lake City. The group says it is the first program in the country to use dogs to help develop literacy in children, with the introduction of Reading Education Association Dogs (READ). The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea. "Literacy specialists admit that children who read below the level of their fellow pupils are often afraid of reading aloud in a group, often have lower self-respect, and regard reading as a headache, " said Lisa Myron, manager of the children's department. Last November the two groups started "Dog Day Afternoon" in the children's department of the main library. About 25 children attended each of the four Saturday-afternoon classes, reading for half an hour. Those who attended three of the four classes received a "pawgraphed" book at the last class. The program was so successful that the library plans to repeat it in April, according to Dana Thumpowsky, public relations manager.

Movies are the most popular form of
entertainment (娱乐) for millions of Americans. They go to the movies to escape
their normal everyday existence and to experience a life more exciting than
their own. They may choose to see a particular film because they like the actors
or because they have heard the film has a good story. But the main reason why
people go to the movies is to escape. Sitting in a dark theater, watching the
images on the screen, they enter another world that is real to them. They become
involved in the lives of the characters in the movie, and for two hours, they
forget all about their own problems. They are in a dream world where things
often appear to be more romantic and beautiful than in real life.
The biggest "dream factories" are in Hollywood, the capital of the film
industry. Each year, Hollywood studios make hundreds of movies that are shown
all over the world. American movies are popular because they tell stories and
they are well-made. They provide the public with heroes who do things the
average person would like to do but often can't. People have to cope with many
problems and much trouble in real life, so they feel encouraged when they see
the "good guys" win in the movies.

单选题 If you're relying on Grandma to help with child
care, it's time to reconsider. A new study of more than 54 000 women found that
those who watched their grandkids 9 hours a week or more were 55% more likely to
have a heart attack. These women may have less time to take care of their own
health, says lead author Sunmin Lee, ScD, of the Harvard School of Public
Health. Younger kids may pose more risk because they need more care.
"However willing your mom might seem, it's up to you to figure out how
much she can really handle," says Meredith Minkler, DrPH, a public-health
professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and an expert on
grandparents as caregivers. "It's not just about physical health. Older adults
need time to connect with people of their own age. Social isolation is a major
risk factor for illness." If your mom helps out, make sure she has breaks during
the day, as well as "vacations" at regular intervals.
单选题As you think about writing a research paper, you may wonder how this job differs from other papers you have written. The basic difference is that most of the ideas that go into the research paper come from materials found in a library. The paper does not grow out of your personal experience and opinions as some other compositions do. Sometimes almost all of the information and ideas that appear in a research paper will come from books, magazine articles, etc. It is your job to find the information and present it in a coherent (连贯的) essay. At other times, you may be required to add your own judgements to the ideas you have collected from different materials. Both may be referred to as a "term paper" or a "research paper", and you should know how to do research as well as how to put together a good paper. Although writing a research paper is more difficult than writing an essay, the rewards (收益) of this work are great. As you increase your knowledge about a topic and begin making judgments, you will rapidly become an expert (专家) on your topic.

In the United States, boys and girls
start school when they are five years old. In some states they must stay in
school until they are sixteen. Most students are seventeen years old when they
graduate from secondary school (中学). Another name for secondary school is high
school. Most children go to public elementary schools (小学) and
secondary schools. The parents of public school pupils do not have to pay
directly for these children's education because tax money supports the public
schools. If a child attends a private school, his parents pay the school for the
child's education. Today about half of the high school graduates
go on to colleges and universities. Some colleges and universities receive tax
money from the government. A student at a state university does not have to pay
much if his parents live in that state. Private colleges and universities are
expensive, however. Almost half of college students in the United States
work while they are studying. When a student's family is not rich, he has to
earn money for part of his college expenses.
