单选题TEAMS Each soccer team has eleven players and three substitute (候补)players. The team consists of a goalkeeper, defenders, midfield players, and forwards. The aim of the game is to get the ball into your opponent's goal. THE MATCH A game of soccer is called a match and is split into tow halves of 45 minutes each, with a 15 minute break at half time. A referee and two assistants make sure that no- body cheats or breaks the rules. GOALKEEPING Goalkeeping is a special skill. While the rest of the team can afford to make mistakes, if the goalkeeper makes one, it usually results in a goal for the opposition. Above Your Head The best way to catch a ball above your head is by joining the thumbs and forefingers of your hands together so there is a small arch between your hands. Chest or Head Height Jump off one leg and cradle the ball comfortably to your chest. The ball should rest on your forearms, with your hands holding it from above. Left or Right Always try to get both hands behind the ball and hold on tight. As soon as you've caught it, bring the ball quickly into the safety of your body.

单选题Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be game of some kind football, hockey, golf, or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activities to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a "team game". We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no "matches" between "teams" of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and their experience certainly equal enjoyment.
单选题More than 30,000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed or seriously injured each year. At a speed of only 30 miles per hour it is the same as falling from a third floor window. Wearing a seat belt saves lives. And it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half.
Therefore drivers or front seat passengers over 14 in most vehicles must wear a seat belt. If you do not, you could be fined up to $50. It will not be up to the driver to make sure you wear your belt. But it will be the driver"s responsibility to make sure that children under 14 not to ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind.
However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing your vehicle or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle, or if you have a valid medical certificate which excuses you from wearing it. Make sure these circumstances apply to you before you decide not to wear your seat belt. Remember you may be taken to court for not doing so, and you may be fined if you cannot prove to the court that you have been excused from wearing it.

Life on land probably began about 430
million years ago, though it has existed in the water for perhaps much as 3 000
million years. When we think of the first life on land, we probably think of
strange animals coming out of the oceans, but, in fact, no animals could have
been living if plants had not been on land first. Plants had to be on land
before animals arrived. They supplied the first land animals with the
surrounding and food necessary, since the plants are the only form of life that
is able to get and store energy. The first plants to exist out
of the water were probably certain kinds of algae (海藻) which were followed by
other plants that grew close to the ground and needed water in which to
reproduce. Once their move to land had been made, however, evolution (进化) took
place quickly. By the end of 100 million years, plants had developed their roots
(根), and some had got tree-like forms since height was very important in gaining
sunlight. About 300 million years ago, much of the world was covered with
forests of huge trees. In most ways they were like modem trees. They had roots,
leaves, wood, but mostly they had not developed
seeds.
单选题Reading is not the only way to gain knowledge of the work in the past. There is another large. reservoir which may be called experience, and the college students will find, that every craftsman (工匠) has something he can teach and will generally teach gladly any college student who does not look down upon them. The information from them differs from that in textbooks and papers chiefly in that its theoretical part—the explanations of why things happen, is frequently quite fantastic. But the demonstration (示范) and report of what happens, and how it happens are correct even if the reports are in completely unscientific terms. Presently the college students will learn, in this case also, what to accept and what to reject. One important thing for a college student to remember is that if Aristotle could talk to the fisherman, so can he.
Another source of knowledge is the vast store of traditional practices handed down from father to son, or mother to daughter, of old country customs, of folklore (风俗). All this is very difficult for a college student to examine, for much knowledge and personal experience is needed here to separate good plants from wild grass. The college students should learn to realize and remember how much of real value science has found in this wide and confused wilderness and how long scientific discoveries of what had existed in this area long.
