单选题A friend of mine named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shining car. "Is this your car, Paul?" he asked. Paul answered, "Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas. " The boy was surprised. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you nothing? Boy, I wish ... " he hesitated. Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly. "I wish," the boy went on, "that I could be a brother like that. " Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again, "Would you like to take a ride in my car?" "Oh yes, I'd love that. " After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, "Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?" Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked. He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car. "There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn't cost him a cent. And some day I'm going to give you one just like it then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I've been trying to tell you about. " Paul got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began an unforgettable holiday ride.

The celebration of Mother's Day can be
traced to the times of ancient Greece when tribute was paid to "Rhea", the
Mother of the Gods. The next recorded tribute to Mother's was during the 17a
century when England celebrated "Mothering Sunday" on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
In America, Julia Ward Howe, the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic",
suggested the idea of Mother's Day in 1872. However, it is Anna
Jarvis of Philadelphia who was credited with creating Mother's Day in 1905. She
wanted to pay tribute to her mother who had tried to establish Mother's
Friendship Day to help heal the scars of the Civil War in America. In 1910, West
Virginia became the first state to adopt a formal holiday to recognize Mothers.
A year later nearly every state officially marked the day of celebration. In
1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother's Day as a national holiday to
be held on the second Sunday of May. Today Mother's Day is
celebrated in many countries throughout the world. Although they do not fall at
the same time in every country, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday
in May in Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium. Their
families honor mothers by dining out, giving flowers, sending cards, giving
gifts, and visits. Additionally, it is reported to be one of the busiest days of
the year for telephone calls. The celebration of Mother's Day
should be every day. They are the ones who nurture us, teach us, protect us, and
make us feel that we matter. Mothers are people in our lives who are most
responsible for the way we grow and mature. If you are a mother and are reading
this, please accept a special thank-you for the part you play in each of our
lives.

单选题What is the cause of the problem that people living on parts of the south coast of England face?
单选题In the past 200 years, Australia has lost 19 species (种类) of animals and 76 species of plants.
The Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service estimates that between 100 and 250 million species of animals and plants have lived on Earth since life began about 3.5 million years ago. Today, there are between 5 and 10 million species, of which up to 1 million or more species could be extinct (灭绝) by the year 2010.
Today the council of state and federal ministers responsible for nature conservation (保护) has produced a list of currently endangered vertebrate fauna (脊椎动物). Three species of whale, various birds, a number of frogs, snakes and fish are also on the list.
But there is some cause for optimism (乐观). Several species previously believed extinct have reappeared in recent years.
This could mean that other "extinct" species may yet surface--even the Tasmanian tiger, which some authorities believe still exists in the remote regions of Tasmania.
