Computer programmer Brendan Tammy
earned £55 000 a year by designing new computer games, yet he cannot find a bank
prepared to let him have a check card. Instead, he has been told to wait another
two years until he is 18. He works for a small company in
Liverpool, where most young people of his age are looking for jobs. Brendan's
biggest headache is how to use his money. Though he has high payment, he cannot
drive a ear, or get credit cards. Brendan got his job four
months ago, a year after leaving school with six O-levels (普通考试科目) and working
for a time in a computer shop. "I got the job because the people who run the
company knew I had already written some programs," he said. "I
suppose 55 000 pounds sounds a lot but I hope it will come to more than that
this year." He spends some of his money on records and clothes, and gives his
mother 20 pounds a week as he lives with his parents. But most of his spare time
is spent working. "Unfortunately, computing was not part of our
studies at school," he said. "But 1 had been studying it in books and magazines
for four years in my spare time. I knew what I wanted to do and never considered
staying on at school. Most people in this business are fairly young, anyway. I
would like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement(退休) is a
possibility. You never know when the market might
disappear."

单选题"Cool" is a word with many meanings. Its traditional meaning is used to
1
a temperature that is fairly cool. As the world has
2
, the word has expanded to
3
many different meanings.
"Cool" can be used to express feelings of
4
in almost anything.
When you see a brand-name car in the street, maybe you can"t help
5
, "It"s cool." You might think, "He"s so cool," when you see your
6
footballer.
We all enlarge the meaning of "cool". You can use it
7
many words such as "new" or "amazing". Here"s an interesting story
8
illustrate the usage of the word: A teacher asked her students to
9
the waterfall they had visited. On one student"s paper was just the one
10
, "It"s so cool."
11
he thought it was
12
to describe
13
he saw and felt.
14
the story also proves the shortage of words and expressions.
15
"cool", some people have no words to express the same meaning. So it is
16
to improve our word strength to maintain some
17
.
As a popular word, "cool" stands for a kind of special
18
that people can accept easily. Except "cool", can you think of many words that
19
your life as colorful? I can. And I think they are also very

H5N1 avian
influenza, known commonly as bird flu, has killed at least 15 people across Asia
and was confirmed in China on January 27. No human cases have been found in the
mainland, but 13 of the country's 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and
municipalities (直辖市) have reported the disease in {{U}}poultry{{/U}}.
The Chinese government has taken measures to prevent and control the
disease. Poultry: within 3 km of infected farms is to be killed and those within
5 km vaccinated (进行接种设苗). Meanwhile, there will be constant monitoring and daily
reports on the disease across the country, and increased production of bird flu
vaccines. Among the Asian countries and regions affected by bird
flu in animals, only Vietnam and Thailand have reported human cases. The people
infected were reported to have caught the disease from poultry. While the World
Health Organization (WHO) said there is "no proof of human-to-human transmission
(传播)" of bird flu. The big fear is that the disease could
combine with a human influenza virus (病毒) to create a deadly new disease that
will kill millions of people across the globe. Many Asian farmers live closely
with their animals and sell live chickens in the market. This greatly increases
the possibility of human beings infected with bird flu. A
spokesman of the WHO said that Asian countries affected by bird flu should
introduce a more healthy way of raising and selling chickens. And the people
there have to completely change their lifestyle and attitude towards animals.
Here are some safety measures for people to stay healthy: * Keep
fit and well through regular exercise; * Avoid infected poultry
and infected people: * Avoid eating raw or under-done poultry
and eggs; * Make sure there is always fresh air in your
home; * Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or
sneezing; * Wash your hands
frequently.
