Computer programmer Brendan Tammy earned &55000
a year by designing new computer games, yet he cannot find a bank prepared to
let him have a check card. Instead, he has been told to wait another two years
until he is 18. He works for a small company in Liverpool,
where most young people of his age are looking for jobs. Brendan's biggest
headache is how to use his money. Though he has high payment, he cannot drive a
car, or get credit cards. Brendan got his job four months ago,
a year after leaving school with six Olive's(普通成绩)and working for a time in a
computer shop. "I got the job because the people who run the company knew I had
already written some programs. " he said. "I suppose 55000
pounds sounds a lot but I hope it will come to more than that this year. "He
spends some of his money on records and clothes, and gives his mother 20 pounds
a week as he lives with his parents. But most of his spare time is spent
working. "Unfortunately, computing was not part of our studies
at school," he said. "But I had been studying it in books and magazines for four
years in my spare time. I knew what I wanted to do and never considered staying
on at school. Most people in this business are fairly young, anyway. I would
like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement (退休)is a possibility. You
never know when the market might disappear. "

单选题Stage plays, at first, seem a lot like films. Both use actors and dialogue and scenery. But if you try to make a film by setting up a camera in front of the stage, you will find it won't work. A film made in this way will leave the audience cold. And even worse you'll be wasting a powerful tool—the camera. A stage is actually a box. One side of the box has been removed so the audience can see what's going on inside. The actors remain at a fixed audience. In the film, however, the camera can bring the audience up close and fix their attention on small but important things: a frightened look, a whisper, a trembling of hands. The camera offers the film maker freedom allowing him to move easily across barriers (界 限) of time and space. He can show his action in real cities and on real farms. He can also use the camera to change the scene dozens of times in one film. No expert of the stage can do this.

单选题Where were the small girl and her mother having a walk?
单选题As my train wasn't due to leave for another hour, I had plenty of time to spare. After buying some newspapers to read on the journey, I made my way to the luggage office to collect the heavy suitcase I had left there three days before. There were only a few people waiting, and I took out my wallet to find the receipt for my case. The receipt didn't seem to be where I had left it. I emptied the contents of the wallet, and railway-tickets, money, scraps of paper, and photographs fell out of it; but no matter how hard I searched, the receipt was nowhere to be found. When my turn came, I explained the situation sorrowfully to the assistant. The man looked at me suspiciously as if to say that he had heard this type of story many times and asked me to describe the case. I told him that it was an old, brown-looking object not different from the many cases I could see on the shelves. The assistant then gave me a form and told me to make a list of the chief contents of the case. If they were correct, he said, I could take the case away. I tried to remember all the articles I had hurriedly packed and wrote them down as they came to me. After I had done this, I went to look among the shelves. There were hundreds of cases there and for one dreadful moment, it occurred to me that if someone had picked the receipt up, he could have easily claimed the case already. This hadn't happened fortunately, for after a time I found the case lying on its side high up in a comer. After examining the articles inside, the assistant was soon satisfied that it was mine and told me I could take the case away. Again I took out my wallet: this time to pay. I pulled out a ten-shilling note and the "lost" receipt slipped out with it. I couldn't help blushing and looked up at the assistant. He was nodding his head knowingly, as if to say that he had often seen this happen before too!
单选题Most of you would probably say that what makes you truly happy is your family and the love you share in your relationships, and I couldn"t agree more. But money comes into play in those relationships.
When I talk about money this way to a group, there is always someone who comes up to me and says, "Suze, you are so wrong. Money isn"t the key to life--this is ! "At which point their wallet flies open and they show me a photo of their family.
That"s when things get interesting, because I start asking them questions: Did you take that photo with your own camera? It looks like a beautiful beach, was the photo taken on a family vacation? Do you hope to help those beautiful boys and girls go to college?
As their answers are" yes", I ask them how they provide all of that for their family. That"s when they understand that I had it right.
I totally agree that family and friends are of great importance to our well being ; without meaningful relationships, there"s no chance of ever being truly happy. That"s why, every Saturday night, I end my CNBC show with the following words:" People first. Then money. Then things. "
How we deal with the money we have also plays into our happiness. Over the past few decades (十年), the percentage of Americans who say they"re happy hasn"t changed much, while at the same time the average income has doubled. So we have more money, but we"re not much happier on average.
A paradox (悖论)? Far from it. My sense is that while we"re making more money, we aren"t making more of the money we make. We have to pay for a lot of things, and we have to worry about saving for retirement (退休) in a way that our parents and grandparents never did. And as many of you know, it"s really hard to increase your happiness when you"ve got a lot of money worries.
Do you agree, or am I way
off base
? I"d love to know what do you think about the money/ happiness connection.

There are several explanations for why
the circle is divided into 360 parts. Probably the best explanation is connected
with the Babylonians(巴比伦人). Many, many centuries ago, large
distances were measured in the Babylonian mile. The Babylonian mile equaled
about seven of our miles. Because of its length, the time needed to travel the
Babylonian mile became a measure of time. One day was said to be twelve
Baby-Ionian time-miles. About one thousand years before Christ,
the Babylonians began keeping records of star movements. They needed a way to
record how much time passed between the moment they first saw a star and then
observed it again. They used the Babylonian time-mile as their measure of
time. In order to have small units of time, the Babylonians
divided their time-mile into thirty parts. The Babylonians believed that each
trip around the sky was a circle. One complete trip around the sky, they
reasoned, took one day. You already know that one day was the
same as twelve Babylonian time-mile. Since each time-mile was divided into
thirty parts, the circular trip around the sky was 12×30, or 360 parts long.
That is how there came to be 360 4egrees in a
circle.
