单选题Most people agree that fencing (击剑) is one sport in which a person must be at least 30 years old before he learns all he needs to know about the sport. But Clark Summers of the University of Detroit has shown that this doesn"t always have to be true. Clark is a different kind of fencer in a lot of ways. He is American, while most fencers are from the countries of Europe. He is black while most fencers in the past have been white. And he is only 22 years old. Many people think that Clark is the most promising fencer in this country today. Although he is young, he has been able to master the necessary skills. Already he has won a number of fencing contests (竞赛) against older fencers. He is almost certain to become a member of the U. S. Olympic (奥林匹克) fencing team! "There is no real danger in fencing, today," Clark says. "But I never forget that fencing was not always a sport. In the old days, People fenced to settle a quarrel. Each match was a matter of life and death. If that came true in the matches I play in today, every touch against me would mean that I had been wounded or killed. So I try to play as if l were fencing for my life. I don"t like the idea of being killed!"

单选题{{B}}D{{/B}} If it were only necessary to decide whether to teach elementary science to everyone on a mass basis or to find the gifted few and take them as far as they can go, our task would be fairly simple. The public school system, however, has no such choice, for the two jobs must be carried on at the same time. Because we depend so heavily upon science and technology for our progress, we must produce specialists in many fields. Because we live in a democratic nation, whose citizens make the policies for the nation, large numbers of us must be educated to understand, to support, and when necessary, to judge the work of experts. The public school must educate both producers and users of scientific services. In education there should be a good balance among the branches of knowledge that contribute to effective thinking and wise judgement. Such balance is defeated by too much emphasis on any one field. This question of balance involves not only the relation of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the arts but also relative emphasis among the natural sciences themselves. Similarly, we must have a balance between the current and classical knowledge. The attention of the public is continually drawn to new possibilities in scientific fields and the discovery of new knowledge; these should not be allowed to turn our attention away from the sound, established materials that form the basis of courses for beginners.

单选题{{B}}Text 4{{/B}} You've probably had the experience of having someone fall in love with you when you didn't return the feeling. In such a case it's hard to know what to do. You want to discourage your admirer. Yet, you don't want to be so obvious in your efforts that you make an enemy of him. A friend of mine had this problem and handled it in the most graceful way I've ever seen. Instead of telling the young man that she found it tiresome to have him around so much, she devoted herself to introducing the young man to every girl she knew. Whenever she had a date with him, she arranged for them to drop in one of her girl friends. A few weeks was all it took for him to click (一见如故) with one of these girls, and then everyone was happy. The new girl and the young man got along just fine and both of them were grateful to my friend, which was just what she wanted him to be. Of course this solution may not work for you. You may have your own way of dealing with the problem. But whatever you decide to do, keep one thing in mind-- the boy in question has feelings as sensitive as your own. So try to find a way of discouraging him without hurting him.

单选题{{B}}B{{/B}} Most of the animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership (伙伴关系) which is good for both of them. You may see some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the lairds to do so because they move the cause of discomfort. So although they can live without each other, they do better together. Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners can not live without each other. This is so in the corals (珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins there are tiny plants which act as "dustmen", taking some of the waste products from the corals and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from receiving light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.
