单选题Most of the animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership (伙伴关系) which is good for both of them. You may see some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the lairds to do so because they move the cause of discomfort. So although they can live without each other, they do better together. Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners can not live without each other. This is so in the corals (珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins there are tiny plants which act as "dustmen", taking some of the waste products from the corals and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from receiving light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.
单选题How do you decide what you are going to buy in a supermarket? Do you look in the refrigerator and make a list? Even if you do so, the supermarket makes some decisions for you.
The managers do all kinds of things that you don"t even notice to make you buy more things. For example, the simple, ordinary food that everybody must buy, like bread, milk and oil, is spread all over the store. You have to walk by all the more interesting—and more expensive—things to find what you need. The more expensive food is packed with bright-colored paper. This food is placed at eye level so you see it and want to buy it. While the things you have to buy are usually put on a higher or lower shelf. However, candy and other things that children like are on lower shelves.
Some stores have red or pink lights over the meat so the meat looks redder. They put light green paper around spinach and put apples in red bags.
The longer you stay in the supermarket, the more you will buy. So the supermarket has a comfortable temperature in summer and in winter, and it plays soft music. It is a nice place for people to stay—and spend more money.
Supermarkets also sell something at a lower, and special price every week. Some people think this means all the prices are lower. In fact, some of them are not really cheaper. Something that is usually $0.50, might be a "special" at 2/$1.00, that is, two for one dollar.
So be careful in the supermarket. You may go home with a lot of food that you didn"t plan to buy. It"s the supermarket that makes the decision for you.

单选题There are many aspects of the women's liberation movement. Some women agree with all of the goals of women's liberation. They want full equality with men in every aspect of life. In marriage, they want husbands and wives to share all of the work and responsibilities of a home and family. In work, they want women and men to have the same jobs and the same chance to succeed. They want women to be paid just as much as men are for the same work. Other women agree with some of the ideas of women's liberation. They want the same pay if they hold the same jobs as men. At home, however, they do not expect their husbands to share in the cleaning, cooking, and other household jobs. It is important to remember that the women's liberation movement is not concerned only with concrete issues. The movement is also concerned with attitudes and beliefs. One example of this concern is the issue of a woman's identity. A woman's identity is what she thinks of herself as a person, who she thinks she is, and what she thinks she can do. Some women do not think they are capable of doing anything important. The women's liberation movement has helped these women improve their view of themselves. Many women who are concerned with women's liberation have taken jobs, have helped others, have raised healthy children, and have done many other things to contribute to their communities. They have shown that they are capable of being good leaders and of doing many important things.
单选题Thousands of years ago man used handy rocks for his surgical operations. Later he used sharp bones or horns, metal knives and more recently, rubber and plastic. In the 1960s a new tool was developed, one which was, first of all, to be of great practical use to the armed forces and industry, but which was also to revolutionize the art and science of surgery.
The tool is the laser and it is being used by more and more surgeons all over the world. As we all know, light is hot, and any source of light will give warmth. But light is usually spread out over a wide area. The light in a laser beam, however, is concentrated. This means that a light with no more power than that produced by an ordinary electric light bulb becomes intensely strong as it is concentrated to a pinpoint-sized beam.
Experiments with these pinpoint beams showed researchers that different energy sources produce beams that have a particular effect on certain living cells. It is now possible for eye surgeons to operate on the back of human eye without harming the front of the eye, simply by passing a laser beam right through the eye-ball. Operations which once left patients exhausted and in need of long period of recovery time now leave them feeling relaxed and comfortable.
The rapid development of laser techniques in the past ten years has made it clear that the future is likely to be very exciting. Perhaps some cancers will be treated with laser in a way that makes surgery not only safer but also more effective.
单选题Today we are going to know something about Santa Fe, the capital city of New Mexico, USA. Santa Fe is in the central part of the state, on the Santa Fe River, flowing into the Rio Grande 35 kilometers west of the city. It is more than two thousand meters above sea level, and it is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with the Ortiz Mountains to the southeast.
It was said that the Spanish founded Santa Fe in 1609 which was only an old Indian village. The Indians made the place under their control in 1680, but after twelve years Santa Fe was in the Spanish"s possession again. The city was out of Spanish rule when Mexico got its independence (独立) in 1821. Ever since then, it was known as a Mexican city. However, it was taken over by American troops in 1846.
Santa Fe is now the second largest city in the state, the population of which is 48,953. It is a good place for people to spend holiday, as the weather is pleasant. It also has complex history and is surrounded by mountains. Apart from hunting and skating in the mountains, people also enjoy shopping in the Indian and Spanish shops, which benefits a lot to the city"s income every year. There is an international opera season in summer, and operas are shown in a partly-roofed, open-air theatre daily for people coming from all parts of the world. So you can"t miss it if you have chance to travel to America.

单选题New York, London, Paris and other big cities are exciting places to live in. There are many interesting things to see and to do. You can go to different kinds of museums, plays and films. You can also go shopping to buy things from all over the world. But there are serious problems in big cities too. The cost of living is high, and there are too many people in some of big cities. Every year many people move to the cities because there are some chances to find jobs, to study at good schools, and to receive good medical care. But sometimes these people cannot find work or a good place to live in. Also, too many people in a small space make it hard to keep the cities safe and clean. Some people enjoy living in big cities. Others do not. Before people move to big cities, they should think about the problems of living there.

单选题All we have a clock located inside our brains. Similar to your bedside alarm clock, your internal clock runs on a 24-hour cycle. This cycle, called a circadian rhythm, helps control when you wake, when you eat and when you sleep. Somewhere around puberty, something happens in the timing of the biological clock. The clock pushes forward, so adolescents and teenagers are unable to fall asleep as early as they used to. When your mother tells you it's time for bed, your body may be pushing you to stay up for several hours more. And the light coming from your computer screen or TV could be pushing you to stay up even later. This shift is natural for teenagers. But staying up very late and sleeping late can get your body's clock out of sync with the cycle of light and dark. It can also make it hard to get out of bed in the morning and may bring other problems, too. Teenagers are put in a kind of a gray cloud when they don't get enough sleep, says Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University in Providence, RI. It affects their mood and their ability to think and learn. But just like your alarm clock, your internal clock can be reset. In fact, it automatically resets itself every day. How? By using the light it gets through your eyes. Scientists have known for a long time that the light of day and the dark of night play important roles in setting our internal clocks. For years, researchers thought that the signals that synchronize the body's clock were handled through the same pathways that we use to see. But recent discoveries show that the human eye has two separate light-sensing systems. One system allows us to see. The second system tells our body whether it's day or night.
