单选题Are You on the List?
Online mailing lists are similar to message boards, but a little bit more private. Like message boards, each list centers on a specific topic. Unlike message boards, mailing lists use email to connect users. Send your email address to a "list server" along with the name of the mailing list (or email conversation) you want to join. From then on (until you unsubscribe), you"ll receive all the email that you and other users send to the list.
The web site List is a great way to find mailing lists. It organizes over 70,000 mailing lists by category. If you sign up for one, make sure you have a stable email address. Many times a list will only let you post a message from the address that you are subscribed (预定) under. Also keep the first email you get from a list in a safe place—it usually tells you how to unsubscribe.
Finally, you may want to sign up for a list and receive only the best messages. Many moderated lists allow you to designate whether you"ll get every message or only a "digest". Again, check that first message for instructions. (A word of caution: don"t go crazy and sign for too many fists all at once. If you do, you may be inundated (泛滥) with email and not get anything positive out of the experience. Take it slow. Sign up for one or two lists, and then go from there.)

单选题In Cardiff I was put to work in furniture department at one of the local stores. It was large, fairly out of date, run (经营), like its parent company in London, by a group of relatives. Being only a member of the store for a short time, I was in a very fortunate position. The others, particularly the older members of the store, were naturally asked to produce good sales figures. I was more of an observer. If I made a sale, I was pleased, but if I didn't, I would not be blamed. I was really there to observe and learn, and as I had no interest in making a position in the furniture business, I wasn't too diligent (勤奋) about that either. One salesman in late middle age once expressed his insecurity (不安全感) by scolding me of trying to steal one of his customers (雇客). Nothing could have been further from the truth, but he demanded that I go to the stockroom (货仓) with him to settle the matter. He was very small and thin, but to my surprise he started dancing about among the carpets and closets working his arms wildly and calling on me to "put them up". I couldn't put anything up--I was too busy rolling on a four-foot six-inch spring mattress (弹簧垫子), helpless with laughter. Finally he saw the joke too, and we went off to the members' store for a conciliatory(和解) cup of tea. Several days later, I finally left the store. Thank God!

单选题When I was about 12 I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings (缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was skinny, I wasn't a good student, I was boyish, I talked too loud, and so on. I put up with her as long as I could. At last, with great anger, I ran to my father in tears. He listened to my outburst (爆发) quietly. Then he asked, "Are the things she says true or not?" True? I wanted to know how to strike back. What did truth have to do with it? "Mary, didn't you ever wonder what you are really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said." I did as he directed and discovered to my surprise that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being skinny), but a good number I could — and suddenly wanted to —change. For the first time in my life I got a fairly clear picture of myself. I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. "That's just for you," he said. "You know better than anybody else the truth about yourself, once you hear it. But you've got to learn to listen, not to close your ears in anger or hurt. When something said about you is true you'll know it. You'll find that it will echo (回想) inside you." Daddy's advice .has returned to me at many important moments.

Today I would like to tell you about
the effects of old age on health. Actually today a lot of improvements have
taken place in the care of old people and old people's health is not nearly so
bad as it used to be. Probably many of the fears that people
have of growing old are greatly exaggerated(夸大). Most people, for example, dread
becoming senile. But in fact very few people become senile Perhaps only about
15% of those over 65 become {{U}}senile{{/U}}. Actually much more common is in fact
caused by doctors ourselves. And that is over-medication. Nearly 80% of people
over 65 have at least one serious illness, such as high blood pressure, heating
difficulty or heart disease And very often to combat these they take a number of
drugs and of course sometimes there are interactions among those drugs. And this
can cause a lot of complications from mental confusions, very commonly, to
disturbance of the heart rhythrn(节奏). So this is a problem that doctors have to
watch out for. Probably the most ignored disorder among old
people is depression. Maybe about 15% of older people suffer from this
condition. A lot of it is caused by this over-medication which we
mentioned. Although it is better now for old people we have to
admit that the body does change as we grow older. The immune(免疫的) system starts
to decline and there are changes in metabolism(新陈代谢), lungs, the senses, the
brain and the skin. So what should an old person do to
counteract these changes? He or she should eat a balanced diet
-- not too much fat -- chicken or fish should be eaten rather than eggs or beef.
Eat more high-fiber and vitamin-rich foods, such as vegetables and
fruit. The old person should give up smoking if he hasn't
already done so. He should also do regular exercises -- at least half an hour,
three times a week. No section of the population can benefit more from exercise
than the elderly.
