单选题Greysteel, Northern Ireland—Protestant (新教的) gunmen shouting "trick or treat" walked into a Northern Irish shop and killed at least seven people to avenge (报仇) the bombing of a protestant shop one week ago.
Eleven people were wounded, several seriously,, when the two gunmen walked into the crowded Rising Sun pub in Greysteel, some 120 kilometres northeast of Belfast, carrying guns.
It is said that they went near a frightened teenage girl and one made the old "trick or treat" greeting that children worldwidely use to get sweets from their neighbours. "I don" t think that"s funny," she replied, then she was shot down.
The dead included an 82-year-old man, a 52-year-aid woman and the 19-year-old girl who had received the "trick or treat" offer.
The shooting brought the death since Saturday"s IRA Belfast bombing to 23. Six Catholics (旧天主教教行徒) were killed by protestant death team in the past week.
It was the second time since Thursday that protestant gunmen had struck outside Belfast, which faces North Sea Strait on the east.

It requires all students to finish at least forty hours of (36) learning (37) they get a diploma that they have (38) for. Service learning is such a learning that also benefits the community. If, for instance, a student wonders what teaching is like, he or she can choose to tutor a student in a reserved classroom several hours each month. (47) there are many benefits, opponents (反对者) raised some questions (48) the new requirements. First, they argue that students go to school (49) to learn core subjects and skills. Service learning, however, is time-consuming and students who spend too much time on it will certainly (50) the core subjects. Second, they hold the opinion that forcing students to work with no (51) is illegal. By requiring service, the school deprives an individual of freedom to choose. As far as I'm concerned, service learning is beneficial not only to the community, but to (52) because they can learn new skills, and find out different careers suitable for them. However, I don't advise that people (53) others under force and the (54) to help others must come from the bottom of the heart. I think the best solution is to give students choices: A student should choose at least forty hours of either independent study or service. It advocates both freedom and responsibility, and as young adults, we must learn to deal with both (55) .

It is impossible that the people of the
world today could agree upon a single international language that everyone would
be able to speak and understand. In the United Nations there are five official
languages—English, Chinese, Russian, French and Spanish. How about making
one of them into an international language? English has been worked on for this
purpose. A basic word list of 850 English words named Basic English was made.
These are the only verbs in the entire list: "come, go, give, keep, let, do,
put, make, say, be, seem, may, will, have, send. "Writing in Basic English may
require you to use a great number of words—as in having to say "it came to my
ear" instead of "I heard"—t you can still say anything you want to with just 850
different words and a few suffixes and prefixes. This is a much smaller number
of words to have to be memorized than ordinary words offered to students of a
foreign language. But people have always had a need to do more
than simply "tell it as it is". Language is for reporting not only one' s work.
For this, a language needs all kinds of grammar and style that throw back its
history and development just as a person needs eyebrows. Is there some special
reason why our lips should be a different color from the rest of our face?
Perhaps not, but this is how people—real people—are. For communication between
people, languages in all kinds will remain to reflect the growth of the
societies that speak them.

HolidayKids
, a new travel guide series (系列) that not only focuses on child-friendly places, but also is written for children. The series from
Holiday Books
cover Hong Kong, Beijing, Bali, Sydney, London and New York.
Written by Gerald McCune, a Hong Kong based Children"s writer, the series taps into the knowledge of parents (and their children) about what in a particular place plays well with children, either from repeated visits or from living there.
The idea is to speak to children directly so they will take part more actively in planning and in later tours. One café review for example reads: "Your parents can have a cup of coffee, while you enjoy a fruit cake and something really sweet, like a chocolate ice cream."
But the books don"t
sugarcoat
everything. A passage about Bali"s Uluwatu temple (寺庙) warns of "hawkers (people who try and sell you things) pushing" and of monkeys stealing things. There isn"t too much of that, and the series doesn"t include anything that isn"t child-friendly.
Their colorful pages are full of attractive pictures and photos by Sally Denney. They are well organized into playfully named sections like "Food, Delicious Food" (restaurants) and "Talking with the Animals" (zoos). Many of the restaurants reviewed show their tasty food with lively pictures. For example, the Natural Restaurant in Phuket serves delicious Thai dishes and is built around "trees that the owners didn"t have the heart to cut down".
This writing-for-kids series lacks some useful information though: you won"t find details about hotels or prices because kids don"t book rooms or worry about money. The guides aim to help one"s travel research. Available for HK $ 90 at major bookshops.
