The human brain contains 10 thousand
million cells and each of these may have a thousand connections. Such enormous
numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making
a machine with human-like ability, but now that we have grown used to moving
forward at such a pace we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years,
perhaps, we will be able to assemble a machine as completes as the human brain,
and if we can we will. It may then take us a long time to render it intelligent
by loading in the right software (软件) or by altering the architecture but that
to will happen. I think it certain that in decades, not
centuries, machines of silicon (硅) will arise first to rival and then exceed
their human ancestors. Once they exceed us they will be capable of their own
design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves. Silicon will
have ended carbon's long control. And we will no longer be able to claim
ourselves to be the finest intelligence in the known universe. As the
intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans and as their cost
declines through economies of scale we may use them to expand our frontiers,
first on earth through their ability to withstand environments, harmful to
ourselves. Thus, deserts may bloom and the ocean beds be mined. Further ahead,
by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology
it will provide, the construction of a vast, man-created world in space, home to
thousands or millions of people, will be within over
power.
单选题First-time dog owners may encounter (遇到) many problems getting to know and train their bets. Sometimes a puppy (小狗), or even an older dog, will chew their fingers or bite them. Even in play, this can really hurt. Unfortunately, many bet owners tolerate (容忍) this in a young dog. However when the dog gets larger, it is not fun to be bitten by it. Training a dog fever to place his teeth on human skin or clothing is an important lesson. From now on, if you feel your dog"s teeth while you are playing with him, say "ouch" in a loud voice and move away from him. He will soon learn that when he bites, you will not play with him any more.
Another bad habit that many people tolerate in their pets is allowing them to bite and held on to clothing. Don"t let your dog do this to you. When he does something you want him to do, praise him and tell him he"s a good dog. You can also give him a treat at the same time he performs the good behavior. Eventually he will learn which kind of behavior is acceptable and which is not. Remember that reward is more effective than punishment, if you reward your dog when he does what you want him to, he will become very well behaved. Also remember that puppies need to chew on something. So give him a sock with a knot tied in it or an old shoe. If he chews the wrong thing, take it away while saying "No" and give him something he can chew. If dogs are trained well, they will truly be your friends for a lifetime.

单选题There are hundreds of TV channels in the United States. Americans get a lot of entertainment and information from TV. Most people probably watch it for entertainment only. For some people, however, TV is where they get the news of the day. But some new TV programs or shows put entertainment and news together. This new kind of program in the United States is called "infotainment", which means information (info-) and entertainment (-tainment). These kinds of programs use actors to act out news stories, making the news of the flay more interesting and exciting to people. The shows also use special effects. An example of infotainment is the show "America's Most Wanted". The producers of this pro- gram get stories from real cases that the police have dealt with. In most of these cases, the; police never found the person who committed the crime. Sometimes they caught the criminal, but he or she ran away again. The people who make "America' s Most Wanted" film it in the city where the crime happened. They use actors to play the parts of all the people in the case. At the end of the story, however, they always show "mug shots" of the real criminals, or police photographs.
