单选题When word got out that Doug Beardsley was introducing a new course this spring — "Hockey(冰球) Literature and the Canadian Psyche(精神)" — the 40 seats in the class were quickly taken. ESPN offered to fly him to New York for a TV chat show, and e-mail arrived from hockey fans and researchers from as far away as Texas and China. "They think they can learn something about us as a nation by learning about the game, about Canadian people. They're right," says Beardsley. Students in Beardsley's class completed three research papers related to hockey. The reading Iist included famous works like The Divine Ryans by Wayne Johnston, The Good Body by Bill Gaston and Les Canadiells by Rick Salutin. They are the kind of books that get at the true meaning of being Canadian. In Beardsley's words, hockey shows the very nature of the polite Canadian. "I think that along with this peace-sharing, gentle image comes a need for mayhem(混乱). So we invent the game and — whammo! — you get on the ice and it serves as a way of letting out those energies that we don't allow ourselves elsewhere," says Beardsley, who added that the reason the game needs to be played in winter is our form of saying. "Look, even up here in the frozen north we can turn this around and make it work for us. " "I'm talking about something larger than what happens on the ice and so is the course./

In England, factory holidays come
mostly in the period between mid-July and mid-August. State schools usually only
have six weeks off, from about mid-July to the end of August.
The coast is the most popular place for the English people to spend their
holidays, but there are few seaside hotels. Food in British hotels and
restaurants is reasonably cheap, but rooms am not. Few English peoplerent
(出租,租金) houses for their holidays, but one of their traditional (传统的) ways of
spending a summer is in a boarding-house (供膳宿舍). Some boarding house
keepers provide all meals for their guests, others provide breakfast
only. The British may refuse to change the times at which they
take their holidays, but they have shown themselves very ready to take to new
places. Every year, more Englishmen, women and children go to some parts of
Europe. Many take their cars, crossing the channel (海峡 ) by ship. When they get
home again, they always talk about how they spent their
holidays.
单选题There are different ways in which people try to deal with the problem of energy. One way is the greater production of common energy sources, such as coal, oil and gas. The trouble with these sources, however, is that they are not renewable.
Another way is energy conservation (节能), which means using energy more efficiently (有效地). In some very old countries people build special houses to save energy. They placed materials between the inside and the outside of the walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in. The house is heated by the lights, the body heat of the people and the other equipment in it.
Finally, renewable energy sources are used even though they are often expensive to develop. One form of these is
geothermal energy
. In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty degrees centigrade with each kilometer down. At six kilometers, therefore, it rises to nearly two hundred degrees. To get the heat, water is pumped (压,抽) down into the rocks and back up to the surface. Heat from the earth is already used in certain countries.
