单选题 William Kunz is a computer genius (天才). When he was just 11, Kunz started writing software ware programs, and by 14 he had worked out his own computer game. As a high school first-year student in Houston, Texas, he won first prize in a science fair for a program he wrote. In his third year, he took top prize in an international science and engineering fair for designing a program to analyze and sort DNA patterns. Kunz went to attend Carnegie Mellon, one of the nation's highest-ranked universities in computer science. After college he got a job with Oracle in Silicon Valley, writing software used by companies around the world. Three years later, Kunz is in his first year at Harvard Business School. He left software engineering partly because he earned much less than his friends who were going into law or business. He also worried about job security (保障), especially as more companies move their programming outside the country to lower costs.

单选题Students who say they never or hardly ever used dictionaries often speak English well but usually write poorly, because they make many mistakes. The students who use dictionaries the most do not learn especially well, either. The ones who looked up every new word do not read fast. Therefore they do not have time to read much. Those who use small two-language dictionaries have the worst problems. Their dictionaries often give only one or two words as a translation of English. But one English word often has many translations in a foreign language and one foreign word has many translations in English. The most successful students were those who use large college edition dictionaries with about 100, 000 words but do not use them too often. Whey they are reading, these students first try to get the general idea and understand new words from the context. Then they reread and use the dictionary to look up only key words that they still de not understand. They use dictionaries more for writing. If they are not sure how to spell a word, or divide it into syllables (音节) ,they always use a dictionary. Also if they think a noun might have an unusual plural or a verb might have an unusual past tense, they checked them in a dictionary.

单选题Driving cars, trucks and motorcycles is an important part of our lives. We do it every day to get to work, to school or to friends' houses. Driving can be very convenient, but can also cause many problems. Waiting in line at a red light, a driver may get impatient and decide just to drive right through it. If another car is coming from the other direction, there might be a terrible accident. Cutting another car off can make its driver angry, so that driver cuts off someone else. Pretty soon everybody is angry, and impatient. Traffic accidents declare millions of lives every year worldwide. In Taiwan alone, over seven people are killed in accidents every day. The annual death rate from traffic accidents in Taiwan is twice that of Japan. To allow traffic to move smoothly and safely, everybody must follow the rules. Before you drive, learn all the traffic laws. That way of driving is safe, convenient and even fun!

单选题Social customs and ways of behaving change from time to time. Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered impolite for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking in the presence of a lady. Customs also differ greatly from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country? Should you use both hands when you are eating? The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For instance, in both countries, people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seat to her, and also will most Americans. Promptness (守时的) is important both in Britain and America. If a dinner invitation is for 7 o'clock, the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay. The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people uncomfortable, especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a formal dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were either amazed or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.

单选题Last week there was a car accident on the highway between our town and a larger town five miles away. Several people stopped to help, just as I did, but none of us had a set of medical equipment in hand for a sudden event, as well as blankets, pillows or anything else that could be helpful at the scene of an accident. Such a situation made us all realize how little most people know about first aid (急救). It also made me decide to carry first treating equipment in my car from then on. If you put this in your paper, it may wake up a lot of people to the importance of being better prepared than I was.
