Have you ever noticed advertisements
(广告) which say "Learn a foreign language in 6 weeks, or your money back, From
the first day your pronunciation will be excellent. Just send..." and so on? Of
course, it never happens quite like that. The only language that is easy to
learn is the mother tongue. And think how much practice that gets. Before the
Second World War people usually learnt a foreign language in order to read the
literature (文学) of the country. Now speaking the foreign language is what most
people want. Every year many millions of people start learning one. How do they
do it? Some people try at home, with hooks and records or tapes;
some use radio or television programmes; others go to evening classes. If they
use the language only 2 or 3 times a week, learning it will take a long time,
like language learning at school. A few people try to learn a language more
quickly by studying for 6 or more hours a day. It is clearly easier to learn the
language in the country where it is spoken. However, most people cannot afford
this, and for many it is not necessary. They need the language in order to do
their work better. For ex ample, scientists and doctors chiefly need to be able
to read books and reports in the foreign language. Whether the language is
learnt quickly or slowly, it is hard work. Machines and good books will help,
but they cannot do the student's work for him.

单选题 There are some objects in the sky that move so quickly that
sometimes you only see them out of the corner of your eye. These are some of the
huge number of bits of rock and dust that are floating around in space, called
meteoroids. Normally, we cannot see them at all, but if they travel too close to
the Earth, they get caught by the pull of the Earth, and begin to fall towards
us. They fall faster and faster, until they hit our atmosphere (大气层), by which
time they are going so fast that they begin to burn up, and all that you see is
a flash of light that moves very quickly across the sky and disappears. These
shooting stars, or meteors as they are properly called, are quite common, and
sometimes you may see several in a night. Most meteoroids are
very small bits indeed, and they bum up long before they get to the Earth.
However, a very few do manage to get all the way through the atmosphere, and
actually fall to the ground. Usually they do not do much damage, although this
is not always the case. Meteoroids that actually manage to
reach the Earth are called {{U}}meteorites{{/U}}. Most countries have places where
meteorites have struck the Earth. Some of these places are very large indeed and
are tourist attractions.

I wonder why American towns look so
much alike that I sometimes mix them up in my memory. The standard influence
(影响) of mass production whose agents (代理商) are the travelling salesman, the
mail-order house, the five-and-ten-cent stores, the chain stores, the movies can
hardly explain it. If you stay two days in Bologna and in Ferrare, or in Aries
and in Avignon, you will never mix them up in all your life. But it may well
happen that after you spend two days in St. Louis and in Kansas City the
appearances of these two cities soon mix up. I think the reason for this is that
these towns have not yet had time enough to develop their own characters.
Similarly, children are much less different from each other than grown
people.

单选题 Baker had stolen some money, but the police had caught
him and he had been put in prison. Now his trial (审判) was about to begin, and he
felt sure that he would be found guilty (有罪的) and sent to prison for a long
time. Then he discovered that an old friend of his was one of
the members of the jury (陪审团) at his trial. He managed to see his friend
secretly one day. He said to him, "Bill, I know I cannot hope to be found not
guilty of having stolen the money—that would be too much to expect. But I should
be grateful (感激的) if you could persuade the other members of the jury to add a
strong recommendation (劝告) for mercy (仁慈) to their statement that they consider
me guilty." "Well, Baker," answered Bill, "I shall certainly
help you, but of course I cannot promise anything. The other eleven people look
terribly strong-minded to me." Baker thanked him warmly for agreeing to
help. The trial went on, and it's time for the jury to make a
final decision. It took them five hours, but in the end they found Baker guilty,
with a strong recommendation for mercy. Of course, Baker was
very pleased. When Bill visited him in prison, Baker thanked him warmly and
asked him how he had managed to persuade the other members of the jury to
recommend mercy. "Well, Baker," Bill answered, "As I thought,
those eleven men were very difficult to persuade, but I managed it in the end by
tiring them out. Do you know, those fools had all wanted to find you not
guilty!"

单选题 As a result of pollution, Lake Erie, on the borders of the
U. S. A. and Canada, now does not have many living things.
Pollution in water is not simply a matter of "poisons" killing large numbers of
fish overnight. Very often the effects of pollution are not
noticed until many months or years later because the first organisms (生物) to be
affected are either plants or planktons (浮游生物). These organisms are the food of
fish, birds, and other creatures. When this food disappears, the fish and birds
would die too. In this way a whole food chain can be wiped out, and it is not
until dead fish and water birds are found at the river's edge or on the sea
shore that people realize what is happening. Where do the
substances that pollute the water come from? There are two main sources, sewage
(生活污水) and industrial waste. As more detergent (洗涤剂) is used in the homes, more
of it is finally put into our rivers, lakes and seas. Detergent harms water
birds by breaking down the natural substances which keep their feathers
waterproof. Sewage itself, if not properly treated, makes the water dirty and
prevents all forms of life in rivers and the sea from receiving the oxygen they
need. Industrial waste is even more harmful since there are more highly
poisonous materials in it, such as copper and lead. So, if we
want to stop this pollution, the answer is simple. Sewage and industrial waste
must be made clean before flowing into rivers and seas. It may be already too
late to save some rivers and lakes, but others can be saved if the correct
action is taken at once.
