"How far is it to the next village?" the American asks a man sitting by the side of the road. In some countries, because the man realizes that the traveler is tired and eager to get to his destination (目的地), he will politely say "Just down the road". He thinks this is more encouraging, gentler, and therefore the wanted answer. So the American drives through the night, getting more and more angry, feeling "tricked". He thinks the man purposely cheated him, for obviously he must have known the distance quite well. Had conditions been turned over, the American would have felt he was "cheating" the driver if he had said the next town was close when he knew it was really 15 miles further on. Though, he, too, would be sympathetic(同情的)to the weary driver, he would say "You have a good way to go yet; it is at least 15 miles". The driver might be disappointed, but he would know what to expect.Whether to be correct or polite leads to many misunderstandings between people of different cultures. If you are aware of the situation in advance, it is sometimes easier to recognize the problem.

Every year landslides (滑坡) cause 25 to 50 deaths and $1.5 billion in damage in the United States. They account for 15 percent of the deaths from natural disasters in Europe. And there was ever a single event killed more than 200 people in the Philippines. Sending workers to stabilize mountainsides using steel bars and cement (水泥) can help prevent disasters, but it introduces new difficulties. Shaking drills produce harmful dust and loosen heavy, dangerous debris (岩屑). "It's quite a risky job," says Giorgio Pezzuto of D'Appolonia, an engineering company in Italy. D'Appolonia, working with eight other companies, may have an answer: a three-ton robot called Roboclimber. "The idea is to operate a machine far away that can drill without a human being on board," says Pezzuto, the manager for the project, which is supported by the European Commission. Engineers claim that the machine will be faster and cheaper than manual labor. The robot, a large radio-controlled four-legged mechanical spider, has cost at least $2 million so far. The final product should be able to climb unstable mountainsides, drill holes, insert bars and cement, and collect data on the stability. Testing should begin in May.

Everyone needs a break, and vacations are not meant for serious study.【B1】______ The Spring Festival is coming up so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey. Before getting into the recommendations, you need to determine your English reading comprehension level. If you're at the beginner's level, there are two options: reading a children' s book or reading a book that you've read in Chinese translation.【B2】______ If you' re at the intermediate level, popular books like pop fiction, mysteries and thrillers are good options. For advanced readers, classic works of literature or modern prize winners (Nobel, Pulitzer) are good options. 【B3】______ When I pick up a book I like, even though the first few chapters are really hard to get through, I would try to get accustomed to the language the author uses. Generally, after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if I get involved in the story. Another great way to keep yourself motivated is to find a friend who's interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve.【B4】______ Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; anything by U. S. writer Michael Crichton; and if you like horror, U. S. writerStephen King is always unusual and fun.【B5】______ Happy reading![A] If you pick a book which is so challenging, it will be too stressful.[B] The most important thing is to pick a book that you' re really interested in.[C] You may also enjoy your reading when hanging out with your family.[D] You should just find a topic or author you' re interested in, and the rest will go from there.[E] You can also discuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by SMS or e-mail.[F] Instead, they' re a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book.[G] This will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you're already familiar with the story.
