A pure virus(病毒) could be kept in a bottle, just like hundreds of other chemicals. Yet, when a virus is placed on a living thing, it comes to life. As long as it is on a living material, it grows.
A difficult question still remains—what is a virus? Is it living or chemical? Men of science had always thought life and not-life to be as different as black and white. With the discovery of the virus, they became aware of
a grey area
that was neither black nor white.
Until the 1930' s, it was accepted that there was also a great difference in size between the largest chemical molecules (分子) and the smallest living things. As new and much finer filters(过滤器) were invented, men were able to measure viruses. The first virus to be measured was found to be about 100 millimicrons(毫微米) across.
The largest known chemical molecule measures only 22 millimicrons. The smallest living thing measures almost seven times that size or 150 millimicrons. When viruses were measured, they were found to range in size from 16 millimicrons to 300 millimicrons. Most were found to be larger than the largest chemical molecules and smaller than the smallest living things.
The answer to the puzzle—what is a virus? —must be that it is both living and not living. In a living cell, it is a live thing. In a bottle, it is nothing more than a chemical. We now realize that the virus is actually a link between life and not-life.
Every year landslides (滑坡) cause 25 to 50 deaths and $1.5 billion in damage in the United States. They account for 15 percent of the deaths from natural disasters in Europe. And there was ever a single
event
killed more than 200 people in the Philippines. Sending workers to stabilize mountainsides using steel bars and cement (水泥) can help prevent disasters, but it introduces new difficulties. Shaking drills produce harmful dust and loosen heavy, dangerous debris (岩屑) . "It's quite a risky job," says Giorgio Pezzuto of D' Appolonia, an engineering company in Italy.
D' Appolonia, working with eight other companies, may have an answer: a three-ton robot called Roboclimber. "The idea is to operate a machine far away that can drill without a human being on board," says Pezzuto, the manager for the project, which is supported by the European Commission. Engineers claim that the machine will be faster and cheaper than manual labor. The robot, a large radio-controlled four-legged mechanical spider, has cost at least $2 million so far. The final product should be able to climb unstable mountainsides, drill holes, insert bars and cement, and collect data on the stability. Testing should begin in May.

There are some objects in the sky that move so quickly that sometimes you only see them out of the corner of your eye. These are some of the huge number of bits of rock and dust that are floating around in space, called meteoroids. Normally, we cannot see them at all, but if they travel too close to the Earth, they get caught by the pull of the Earth, and begin to fall towards us. They fall faster and faster, until they hit our atmosphere(大气层), by which time they are going so fast that they begin to burn up, and all that you see is a flash of light that moves very quickly across the sky and disappears. These shooting stars, or meteors as they are properly called, are quite common, and sometimes you may see several in a night.
Most meteoroids are very small bits indeed, and they burn up long before they get to the Earth. However, a very few do manage to get all the way through the atmosphere, and actually fall to the ground. Usually they do not do much damage, although this is not always the case.
Meteoroids that actually manage to reach the Earth are called
meteorites
. Most countries have places where meteorites have struck the Earth. Some of these places are very large indeed and are tourist attractions.

August 13th, 2014 Dear Sirs, I am very happy to apply for the position of secretary, which you advertised in China Daily of August 11, 2014. I have been working as a secretary at a college office. Because I am the only secretary in the office, it is necessary for me to work quickly and efficiently and to be flexible in my daily work. Professors value my work and my ability to meet their needs. Although I am happy now, I feel that my promotion (晋升) is limited here, and I would like to have a more challenging job. Therefore, I enrolled (参加) in a program to expand my knowledge of international business affairs. Now, both my English and Chinese have been improved and I am ready to begin working as a bilingual secretary in an international company like yours, and I believe I can be a great help to your firm. The enclosed resume gives further details of my qualifications, and I would appreciate it if you could give me an opportunity to have an interview. I am looking forward to receiving your call at 62428866 or please use the enclosed pre-paid postcard to send me your reply. Thank you very much for your consideration. Faithfully Yours, Mary Lee

What do you think?Alice: Some backpackers strongly identify themselves as a community other than tourists, and think they are better than tourists in some way. They would go to a place and only talk to other backpackers. But I' m not really sure I can agree with that.Tom: which country are backpackers from, the United States?Alice: They are of different nationality. But people in some countries, say, Canada, do love to travel better.Tom: Well, good luck with your next travel!Alice: Thanks !
