单选题{{B}}B{{/B}} Greysteel, Northern Ireland--Protestant (新教的) gunmen shouting "trick or treat" walked into a Northern Irish shop and killed at least seven people to avenge (报仇) the bombing of a protestant shop one week ago. Eleven people were wounded, several seriously, when the two gunmen walked into the crowded Rising Sun pub in Greysteel, some 120 kilometres northeast of Belfast, carrying guns. It is said that they went near a frightened teenage girl and one made the old "trick or treat" greeting that children worldwidely use to get sweets from their neighbours. "I don' t think that's funny," she replied, then she was shot down. The dead included an 82-year-old man, a 52-year-old woman and the 19-year-old girl who had received the "trick or treat" offer. The shooting brought the death since Saturday's IRA Belfast bombing to 23. Six Catholics (旧天主教教徒) were killed by protestant death team in the past week. It was the second time since Thursday that protestant gunmen had struck outside Belfast, which faces North Sea Strait on the east.

单选题{{B}}B{{/B}} "To get cash out in the 21st century, you won't need a bank card or a PIN and you even won't have to move a finger. You will simply have to look the cash machine straight in the eye," declares National Cash Registers, a multinational company that makes automated teller machines, or ATMs. NCR has shown its first example machine that is believed to be the future of banking. Instead of asking you for your PIN on a screen, the super teller--Stella for short, asks you orally through a loudspeaker to look straight ahead while an infrared camera turns to your head, then your eye, and finally takes an infrared photograph of your iris (虹膜). For identification purposes, an iris picture is better than a fingerprint, with around 256 noticeable characteristics compared with 40 for fingerprints. This means that the chances of someone else being recognized in your place is about 1 in 1020. Once you've been identified, Stella greets you by name and says, "Would you like cash or a statement?" An infrared port allows the machine to send a bank statement straight to your palmtop computer.

单选题The taxi driver was a man in his late thirties. He picked me up and 1 me to my place. I usually like to have brief 2 with people no matter where I come upon them and this situation was no 3 . I started by asking him how 4 was. He told me briefly that his business was just 5 but the cost of gas was really hurting his 6 line. We then got around to 7 the job environment. He told me that he had difficulty getting another type of work because of his 8 . "I used to be a con(罪犯)," he said 9 "People look at my record and then I"m 10 , but you know I"ve turned my life around and have been 11 for several years. 单选题Attention to detail is something everyone can and should do especially in a tight job market. Bob Crossley, a human-resources expert notices this in the job applications that come across his desk every day. "It's amazing how many candidates eliminate themselves" He says. "Resume(简历)arrive with stains. Some candidates don't bother to spell the company's name correctly. Once I see a mistake, I eliminate the candidate," Crossley concludes. "If they cannot take of these details, why should we trust them with a job?" Can we pay too much attention to detail? Absolutely. Perfectionists struggle over little things at the cost of something larger they work toward. "To keep from losing the forest for the trees", says Charles Garfield, associate professor at the University of California, San Franciseo, "We must constantly ask ourselves how the details we're working on fit into the larger picture. If they don't, we should drop them and move to something else". Garfield compares this process to his work as a computer scientist at NAST. "The Apollo Ⅱ moon launch was slightly off-course 90 percent of the time. "Says Garfield , "But a successful landing was still likely because we knew the exact coordinates of our goal. This allowed us to make adjustments as necessary. "Knowing where we want to go helps us judge the importance of every task we undertake. Too often we believe what accounts for others' success is some special secret or a lucky break(机遇). But rarely is success so mysterious. Again and again, we see that by doing little things within our grasp well, large rewards follow.

单选题Movies are the most popular form of entertainment (娱乐) for millions of Americans. They go to the movies to escape their normal everyday existence and to experience a life more exciting than their own. They may choose to see a particular film because they like the actors or because they have heard the film has a good story. But the main reason why people go to the movies is to escape. Sitting in a dark theater, watching the images on the screen, they enter another world that is real to them. They become involved in the lives of the characters in the movie, and for two hours, they forget all about their own problems. They are in a dream world where things often appear to be more romantic and beautiful than in real life. The biggest "dream factories" are in Hollywood, the capital of the film industry. Each year, Hollywood studios make hundreds of movies that are shown all over the world. American movies are popular because they tell stories and they are well-made. They provide the public with heroes who do things the average person would like to do but often can't. People have to cope with many problems and much trouble in real life, so they feel encouraged when they see the "good guys" win in the movies.
