Computer people talk lots about the
need for other people to become "computer literate ". But not all experts think
it a good idea. One pioneer, in particular, who disagrees, is
David Debut, the founder of Computer town UK. Though many people see this as a
successful attempt to bring people closer to the computer, David does not see it
that way. He says that Computer town UK was formed for just the opposite reason,
to bring computers to people and make them "people literate".
David Debut thinks Computer towns are most successful when tied to a
computer club but he thinks there is an important difference between the two.
The clubs are for people who have some computer knowledge already. This
frightens away non-experts, who want to go to Computer towns where there are
computers for them to operate, with experts to encourage them and answer any
questions they ask. They are not told what to do, they find out. The computer
experts have to learn not to tell people about computers, but have to be able to
answer all questions people ask. People needn't learn computer terms (术语). But
the experts have to explain in plain language. The computers are becoming
"people literate".
单选题Good table manners are back Candlelight bathes the restaurant guests in a friendly light, the menu is about to be served. Some guests are prepared to eat while others are looking around with nervous glances. Which knives and forks should be used first, and where should you put the napkin(餐巾)? For a while table manners were "out". Now men and women aged 30 or so are rediscovering the finer points of being polite. Good manners give a pleasant impression(印象). But how do you eat "properly"? The golden role is to act silently. You should not talk to someone with your mouth full. When eating a five-course meal--a frequent event during the holiday season--guests needn't feel frightened by the variety of knives and spoons before them: you work your way towards the plate from the outside. Uncertain situations often can be mastered with common sense. For example, many unknown salad(沙拉) greens can be difficult to tell from one another, but you can cut them all with a knife. The napkin remains subject special care. The correct way is to fold it in half and lay it on your lap (膝上). If you leave your place, you should always place your napkin next to the plate. After the meal is over, both cloth and paper napkins are folded and not thrown onto the plate. The proper table manners also can serve professional advancement. If a choice has to be made among several people for an important position, the employer may choose to lunch with them. Those who make noise with their lips certainly won't stand a chance.

单选题Mr. Bill liked shooting very much but he was never good at it. A month ago some of his friends visited him in his house and saw a new target(靶子)which Bill had put several days before in his garden. His friends went nearer and looked at this beautiful target. There was a hole right in the middle of the target. When they asked who had shot the target, Bill said he had. They all laughed and said, "How far away were you ,Bill? Two feet? But Bill said he was fifty yards (码) away. Then Mr. Bill's wife explained about the hole in the middle. She said, "Bill went to a shop and bought a very big piece of wood. He brought it home in a car, put it in the garden and shot at it from fifty yards away. Then he drew a target round the bole and cut the wood./

单选题The American type of football was developed in the 19a century from soccer and rugby football. The football playing field of today is rectangular in shape and measures i00 yards long and 53.5 yards wide. White lines are painted on the playing field to mark off the distances to the end zone. The game is divided into four quarters, each fifteen minutes long. The first two quarters are known as the first half. There is a rest period between the two halves which usually lasts about fifteen minutes. Each team has eleven players. Each team has offensive players (play when the team has possession of the ball) and defensive players (play when the other team has possession of the ball). Players are required to wear protective equipment to help keep the body safe during the game. Helmets are worn to protect the head and face area. Pads are worn to protect the shoulders, arms, and legs. Protective equipment must be worn because of the body contact players have during the game. Officials supervise the game and are considered to be very important to the game of football. They carry whistles and flags and make certain that the rules of the game are followed during the game. The football is made of leather and is brown in color. It is shaped much like an oval and has white rings near each end of the football. These rings help the players see the ball when it is thrown or when someone is running with it. The eight stitches on the top of the football help players to grip or hold the ball when throwing or passing. The most famous football game of the year is the Super Bowl that is played in January or February. It is televised around the world and is watched by millions of people each year.

单选题Sometime in the next century, the familiar early-newspaper on the front gate will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You'll get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You'll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer if you like. These are among the predictions from communication experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting, offering news and analysis with video images of news events. Most of the technology is available (可用的) now, but convincing (说服) more people that they don't need paper to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance to computer newspaper may be stronger from within journalism. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of journalists and pub-fishers will have to die off before the next generation realize that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavoidable. Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace newsprint with computer screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to complete the changeover because people need to buy computers and because newspapers have established financial (财经的) interests in the paper industry.
